I find it unusual that people are talking about yuri suggestiveness, especially being such a yuri fanatic myself, i didn't jump to such presumptuous conclusions, however if it is the case, that's neat. As far as pseudo-sexualized suggestive scenes, that's normal for japan, and it doesn't necessarily infer anything relating to sexual activities themselves.

I can't see this stuff being "yuri" either....mostly because Papika's interaction with Cocona is very very childish. More like a little sis tagging after her big sis than a girl in love, really.

Definitely the most trippy anime I've seen since Yuri Kuma....

And this definitely smells like Yuri, so I'm gonna keep watching.

Thank god in world filled with so much Yaoi....we can still have a nice Yuri anime.

I mean it's possible, but i don't see why it seems so blatant to a bunch of other people, especially when a certain other musical anime has a lot more yuri suggestions than this.

Actually you know what it probably is, is everyone, like this person above me, remembering Yuri Kuma Arashi.

There's difference between ambiguous yuri bait like love live does for marketing reasons and actual suggestive sexual subtext.

Another nice episode, which didn't really improve nor lessen my opinion of the show in any particular way. Papika is still cute, the atmosphere is as whimsical and surreal as always and we still no little to nothing about the overarching plot and the true purpose of all these expeditions to the land of Pure Illusion, though a few hints are being dropped here and there throughout the episode. This week roles are reversed as Papika's the one to save Cocona from a deadly situation in a very similar fashion to what happened in the first episode, thus reaffirming the mutual nature of the bond they share. Obviously, none of this is meant as a criticism, but I'm definitely ready for a change of pace.

Yeah, I'm still enjoying so far but I'm really iffy about the whole perverted robot gimmick which, at least for the moment, doesn't seem to serve any other purpose than getting Cocona flustered.

Love live isn't yuri bait at all lol. It's just friendship stuff which gives yuri-shippers loads to talk about.

Sexual subtext exists in literally almost every anime, and usually centred around females. Nothing proves it's yuri, as it could be general coming of age context. I do want more yuri, but arbitrary correlations aren't gonna get you anywhere.

No, it is absolutely full of queerbait. Not as much as Euphonium's shameless marketing tactics but still there.

You do know that BAITING is not confirmation? Its exactly what you said. Baiting exists within plausible deniability so Otaku can still imagine their waifus going off to be "useful" females of japanese society.

This absolutely has sexual lgbt subtext in this. As in actual sexual subtext and not just baiting. People are drawing comparisons to stuff like Utena, Yuri Kuma Arashi, etc, for a reason.

Yet most people were hardcore denying it in Euphonium... My point is not that there's sexual subtext, as i said, it's in practically all anime, i was merely talking about whether the specific cases of sexual subtext infer yuri or not. Because as they stand, the subtexts are just ambiguous sexuality with no orientation.
...Actually, if i were to make any judgements, i'd say it's implying not-yuri, with the whole fighting the desire for hard things and biting on phallic objects.

At any rate, i'm really loving the whimsical nature of this series and the neat look through the japanese eye deep into the land of western folktale style.

Definitely.

This show is probably the most intriguing thing i've seen in a long time. It's so far beyond anything i'd normally be into, with the allusions to Alice in Wonderland and Wizard of Oz (especially this episode) and so on... This is an extremely unique series, and it puts you in that squirmy position, where even if you can make sense of what going on it drives you nuts that you can make sense of such insanity.

I can't stop watching it. Though, there are definitely many hints to a very dark presence behind it all, despite the ridiculous classical cartoon sugarcoating.

Also: https://yaranakya.wordpress.com/2015/06/30/on-yuri-2-changing-definitions/

This Ayana Yunico is the main writer for FliFla. And in fact her definition about yuri nowadays is quite relevant in what's being discussed here.

But thing is, the writer is a yuri fangirl who even write about yuri in a magazine. And the director also said the subtext is intentional.

That's pretty convincing indeed. That doesn't necessarily mean 100% love-love yuri, but it definitely does mean it's more likely. Thanks!
I guess that justifies the rumours, of which most people probably passed on without knowing where they came from, making it hard to take seriously XD

Yuri fangirl? I approve!!

Ominous painting seems like the river dream Cocona had and their forest adventure in ep1.
Uexkull hot Bunnyman.
All Papika outfits were nice.
Lots of yuri sniffing. Sense of smell may become a greater theme.
LSD colors, bunnies, ufo shaped vacuum under the Thinker status, vacuum internals as pure illusion, it's so trippy & probably lots of references.
Freudian symbolism totally having a field day.
Mc's kinda right, again Papika puts them in danger when she removed the shard from the switch, causing the vacuum to turn on. But tsundere gets a bit closer & more accepting. It seems somethings carry over to real life, others like glasses return, or maybe someone's hiding stuff from Cocona.

-I kinda hoped episode 2 would explain what happened at the cliffhanger at the end of episode 1, but they seem to be leaving it for the future
-That rabbit... thing has one hell of a name
-Papika sure can hard carry this show, with that adorably boneheaded class transfer scene
-Cocona's transition from reading the passage to telling Papika to shut up was pretty great. She did it so fluidly.
-Huh, Yayaka's VA is the voice of Uzuki in iM@S. I thought she sounded familiar.
-I like how colorful this show is, but those color changes in the Pure Illusion were pretty disorienting, though. It was fine until their hair color turned totally different.
-Papika ends up repaying the favor to Cocona after rescuing her from the ice lake in the first episode. It's kinda interesting how blue-haired Cocona rescued Papika from ice, and how red-haired Papika rescued Cocona from magma.
-Uexkull's tongue after they got out of the Pure Illusion was pretty creepy
-Salt just doesn't seem like a trustworthy person
-Weird pink-haired dude's facial expression when telling them their job was unpaid was pretty great
-With that sinister-looking cliffhanger at the end there is no way this show doesn't go down the rabbit hole

So there were a lot of things that seemed pretty sinister in this episode, including how Papika didn't immediately take human form in the Pure Illusion, the painting at the school, the giant magma pool inside the Pure Illusion, and Dr. Salt in general. After watching the second half this episode, something just seems... off about everything in the FlipFlap universe. Of course, the OP animation and the ED animation also seemed to convey that strangeness. I didn't think the Pure Illusion in this episode was as visually magnificent as the one in the last episode, but I tend to like nature scenes better than ruined landscapes that this episode had. The art styles of the Pure Illusion worlds seem to change each episode, which would probably be interesting to see.

Show was in worldbuilding mode throughout the episode, and it wasn't until the end until actual plot developments happened. I happened to think that their universe was pretty established at the end of the first episode, so this episode seemed a bit redundant/pointless to me. At least this episode gave Papika a chance to be a hero and dropped hints that the world is not as bright and cheery as it's drawn.

i mean, so far this anime is pretty fun to watch. plot and character-wise i'm not sure how i feel. but the animation is so pretty and the fanservice is the rare type that i enjoy

also wtf was that green bunny pet? when did Cocona get him? i'm assuming this world has a different setting where there's unusual creatures and all because no one seemed shocked by the green bunny

still wondering why Papika seems like she hasn't been in the outside world at all since now, has she always been closed off in that lab?

The color pallet in this series is so orgasmic. The hand painted backgrounds are so incredibly done. The art alone is stunning. And I'm all for this zany plot, it does have structure bound to it's insane art house trip.

Art's definitely fun and enjoying that immensely. Story itself is interesting so far as well. That being said...you know what I remember about Inuyasha...Kaggggooommmeee being yelled in numerous episodes.

What will I remember about this episode? Not the art, not the story, but Cocona literally being said more than 50 times. Toss in Papika and names alone make up a significant amount of the dialogue.

Please someone, pleeaaaaase make a remake of this show with the ED version, it's so beautifuuuuuul !!!! And that song... I love this wholr aesthetic so much. Right up my alley.

I loved the artsyle when the girls arrived in the new world ! That's exactly the kind of wacky fantasy I was looking for when I started this show, it really does have it ! I was starting to get worried there wouldn't be anything like that.
For the rest though, I'm still not sold on.
Papika is adorable, but I'm not that fond of Cocona, and their relationship still confuses me. It feels like I missed out an episode, I really dislike when shows do that.
And that's not only when it comes to the characters, but just the story in general. It's nonsense. Consequently I have a hard time feeling invested and that's too bad, there's some moments I find to be incredibly charming and it reminds me of some of my favorite childhood shows, but even those shows had an actual understanble story and character relationships that made sense.
Here, nothing is there to make me feel involved. I want to just turn off my brain and enjoy a trip to my childhood, but I can't because I have no idea what is going on. It's annoying actually...

This show is cool as hell. Stellar recommendation from one of those 'good anime shows rated 7 or less' threads. I think this was a good episode to follow the first with, really exhibiting the unpredictability and transformative quality of the Pure Illusion world. I enjoy the characters, enjoyed the transformation aspects in this episode, and the art direction and animation are great.
