And suddenly one week later, she's prettier than the model and yet, nothing of her personality has changed. And yet, guys were all over her. And that really bugs me, because they just paid attention to her the minute she became good looking.
Look at it this way: if all four guys treated her the same before and after, there
would be absolutely no character development. They would be four perfect princes that don't need to grow, because they're magically accepting of everyone and have nothing to overcome; the story would be boring and reek too strongly of self-insert (the mangaka is female, in case you didn't know) wish fulfillment to be any sort of enjoyable.
That aside, don't forget that Kae is every bit as guilty of this as the guys; her entire hobby is about shipping pretty boys and she pretty much ignores their personalities to indulge in that. It's a comedy about
everyone acting shallow and hijinks ensuing when they're forced to see past that.
Before, no one really look at her in the romantic sense and one of them even ran into her without any regard to her safety, not to mention some kid from year 1 made some spiteful remark of her. And now, they just head over heels over her. Do they even know her or what they like about her? In Episode 2.I couldn't help but agree what the big brother did and glad that he showed the guys how much of the BL fan that she is. (Btw, that scene was hilarious.)
To be fair, Nanashima charged into a
group of girls, Kae was the only casualty was because she was too lost in her fantasy to jump out of the way with other girls. He didn't slam into her because he ignored her existence, he did it because he's the stereotypical meathead with zero situational awareness. He was a jerk for making the cushion joke though.
Igarashi, on the other hand, may not have been attracted to Kae, but he did treat her normally. He was the one who reminded Nanashima to apologize and scolded him for making that joke, so he didn't ignore Kae at all.
Shinomiya was pretty rude for his remark when shooing Kae out of the infirmary, for sure.
Mutsumi treated her the same way before and after, he's only tagging along because he's the type that easily gets caught up in the flow. Granted he probably has no romantic feelings for Kae at all and only serves as a catalyst to egg on the rest of the guys.
And yeah, they hardly know anything about her, but
that's how every relationship starts (well, excluding the ones that start online, where people
presumably get to know each other before actually meeting, but that comes with baggage of its own): people who are physically attracted to each other start a relationship,
then learn if they want to stay together or murder each other.
Of course I'm not saying "what matters is inside",in fact both appearance and personality are equally important. But if I wanted to date someone, I would like them to accept me who i am, no matter how much I love my cheesecakes. It would make so much more sense to me if there's some patience approach to this story rather than throwing all of these handsome guys at her.
I mean shit, I'm straight and if someone throw me a bunch of handsome guys, I would ask if this's a prank or not. What do you guys think?
And that's the whole point: the guys are initially attracted to Kae for her appearance, then grow to accept her personality, and eventually learn her appearance doesn't matter. The comedy comes from the prank-like situation of all four trying to start at the same time.
