No it's not actually. This will make you think history show is much kinder than this.

To people that dislike tragedies or think this will be some fun trip till the end, better stop now, it's not. This show is way darker than you think.

Actually only Total Eclipse is labelled under the MLA because near the end Yuuya got involved in operation cherry blossom.

Great starter episode. A bit too rushed at places, but its already better than the piece of shit that was Total Eclipse.

I can only hope this does well and both Muv Luv VNs get adapted too.

So far 8/10. Depending on pacing might go up or go down.

Warning to newcomers: DO NOT touch Total Eclipse. It has nothing to do with this.

The PTSD or mental issues are pretty common in this setting. Its realistic in that way inthat characters snap just as easily as normal humans would.

Total Eclipse is absolutely not representative of Muv Luv.

Its Muv Luv Alternative after a lobotomy, with less politics and exploration of human nature and with more boobs and harem antics. Because who needs exploration of futility and horror of war and the darkness of human nature if we can focus on BOOOOOBIEEEES.

The original had very interesting lead character and story, while the total eclipse replaces him with generic-japanese-self-insert and then does nothing. The only remotely decent thing about Total Eclipse is the first episode.

Having mechs 50 years ago that won't even be close to possible 50 years from now is a little offensive, but not as offensive or completely impossible as the stupid gear they have in Attack on Titan, so whatever.

My first impression on this is well the pacing is fast and unless you know Muv Luv before, anything at all, from the visual novel or Total Eclipse you will pretty confused. I enjoyed hearing the whole beginning as it gave a discription of what is happening and the action was cool but they really didn't give us anything on who these characters are and fully what is happening just a little of Theodor's past and Katia's goal and then showing some bad guys that is all. Hopefully it will show more and teach us more about these characters in the next episodes because seriously I don't have any likeness for any of the characters as of this moment because we really don't know anything at all about them.

Here is my full first impression and review on the episode:

Guess TE isn't the best representative of the Muv Luv series, whole reason why the actually VN are so well received hence the kickstarter

was just simply putting it shit's gonna get rough with in this and to not get attached to characters lol.

This was pretty meh. I was honestly expecting something a whole lot more engaging. I just couldn't "feel it", just kinda went through the motions.

That being said, both the LN and the VN have good ratings here and on vndb (even though only 20ish people have read them), so hopefully things will get more interesting. And I really hope so, because this is one of the few series I'm making a point of watching. At least for the time being.

That was pretty decent to me at least. Nothing amazing though.

The PTSD stuff really reminds me of some instances of Alternative.

That was my first time seeing TSF's fight BETA in real time (read Muv Luv Visual Novels about 1.5 years ago was advised to stay away from Total Eclipse). If nothing else Alternative really made it obvious how easily the BETA slaughtered so many humans and the horror of it all, obviously the black mark 666 squad here probably has special training with beefed up TSFs , but anime did well to show they can die as well.

Kinda hard to recreate that fear factor against the BETA from anime 3rd person perspective but I thought it was done fairly well.

Not sure how I feel about all the cold war stuff, I'm hovering towards disinterest and annoyance right now. I'm hoping the series isn't going to go more after a melodramatic alternate history cold war Germany stuff, and focus more on surviving against BETA and good character relations and interactions.

The characters are okay so far I suppose.

There's no reason newcomers shouldn't watch TE if they are interested in Muv-Luv. There's a few things that TE explains that would make watching Schwarzesmarken easier to understand. It's not reasonable to expect everyone to read a VN series in order to enjoy the anime.

TE didn't replace anyone from MLA. It's a completely different story, a spinoff.

Boobs and harem antics? Yeah there was a bit of that, I don't think it got in the way of the plot when things mattered.

Let's not forget that MLA is an eroge - if anything MLA had far more explicit sexual content than TE ever did.

I have to disagree with you. My only experience with the Muv-Luv universe was TE, and I disliked TE to such an extent that even after watching this episode, had Fai not commented above, I would have dropped this show upon learning it was a TE spin off.

I don't mind fanservice or even eroge, but both should support the story, not contradict it. Any good writer should be able to weave either into the story, but the writer(s) of TE failed miserably. They were pathetic. As such disgust is all anyone should have felt towards the franchise. It helps to restore some faith to know that the main series was better.

Muv-Luv TE was alright so I have no problem going through this. In truth this actually started better then Muv-Luv. However....Katia is just the worst right now. Her existence clashes with everything around her. My major complaint. Hopefully this adaptations "theme" stays in the course.

lmao. I suggest you don't say anything if you don't know what you are talking about.

First of all, the TSFs aka Tatical Surface Fighters (aka the mechs in the Muv Luv verse) were all made due to a huge amount of resources poured into mech development instead of a proper air force like in the real world.

If you look at all the TSF names, they all have names similar to real life aircrafts and fighter jets. This is because the Laser Class Beta fuck up anything that can fly as high as a helicoper or jet, so humanity decided to invest in TSF technology to combat the BETA rather than something as useless as aircrafts.

As a result, TSFs in the Muv Luv verse are essentially what aircrafts and jets are to us today.

Air support has been shown to be extremely effective in the Muv Luv universe only if there are no Laser Class Beta present. Otherwise, it becomes a one sided massacre.

Came in not knowing it was a spin-off of Muv-Luv. Which I haven't watched either. Seems interesting enough.
Character settings are pretty dumb. There's no military in the world that would throw a soldier with PTSD back onto the battlefield. It just causes unneeded troubles and necessary death. I hate when stories do that. It's a dumb plot device.
Other than the PTSD chick and the ridiculously optimistic new girl that spouts all the nice things about peace and friendship that's needed in every mecha/war anime, this interested me enough to check out Total Eclipse.

Muv Luv is a visual novel franchise just 2 spin off series have managed to get anime adaptions which I'm okay with. If the main series ever got an anime I don't see it doing good because of how highly appreciated it is that every little thing will just feel wrong unless for some reason they decide to produce 75+ episodes for it then I could say otherwise.

TE is all about taking the same setting and telling a different story with different characters.

Harem antics and crap like that absolutely got in the way of what matters. TE barely has anything resembling politics or character development.

Yes Muv Luv is eroge. Where mot of "eroge/visual novel" elements are masterfully used to build up characters and make you care for them and where the lead character goes through a very fascinating and complex character arc. TE on other hand spends more time to find excuses to show naked women.

Total Eclipse is literally "There's no Tsukihime anime" of Muv Luv.

MC-kun is a cunt and that PTSD girl made me mad because she got that girl killed all because she's an idiot but I can overlook this depending on how things go from here

What I will say is that I'm glad that this show feels like Muv-Luv and isn't censored.....Action was pretty standard for this series, mach designs and just the art and animation in general were good and the battles were handled pretty great

What I loved the most though was all of the political stuff and seeing how fucked up this country is and how the people there are even worse lol, like holy shit everyone are so cruel and rude xD

Dat ending tho......That girl at the end is so the MC's sister (At least that's who I'm assuming the girl from the flashback was)....My only fear is the pacing of this series so if it's handled well enough I'll be very very pleased

Also, Captain is bae and the silver haired girl is 10/10 would bang
