THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Awesome as always.

Again, Mirai is as cynical as an old man....-__-. To contrast her, Yuuki and Mari are quite the optimistic....

The earthquake seemed to have caused less damage than we initially thought. It must have been the rain that made it look apocalyptic. Of course, this is Japan, one of the countries that is most prepared against earthquakes due to its frequent occurence. If an earthquake of the same magnitude were to happen in Mumbai for example, the death toll will be much higher. Of course, about 800 dead is confirmed, not counting the missing ones.....But you have to admit that the people portrayed in this episode were civilized enough to not cause major panic.....

As predicted, no one is safe yet due to the infrastructure collapsing and afterquakes...And we have seen even Mari is afraid (hand is shaking), but is hiding it. And Mirai seems to notice and comfort her in return by holding her hand. That was VERY well done in terms of script and character development.

Next episode, Tokyo Tower collapses?? Notice the news anchor's announcement is the preview of next episode.

Awesome indeed.

I love how the characters continue to flow with each other. We can tell Mirai probably has some distrust to/with adults (I'm guessing this is brought on due to her parents.), yet, she doesn't view herself as a child, despite the way she acts.

There were too parts that really stuck to me in this episode.

I don't think BSS subs had that preview. :/

I really liked the episode as well, I think I've grown attached to the characters quite fast.

But I thought it was a little extreme that everybody else seems so extremely unfriendly, like the people who pushed Mirai away. Okay, obviously it is an extreme situation for everybody, but I don't know if so many people are that inconsidarate towards chilrden. Same with Mari helping that mother, there must have been a houndred people passing them before Mari, and nobody helped them before. I know I'm probably too optimistic, but I think at least 5% would help them... or not?

Yup, that's what I thought when the ED started.

A slow but realistic and amazing episode that showed Mirai's acceptance to Mari's help and hinted at further future growth in her character. But yeah, in a disaster such as this, I was quite annoyed watching selfish people push a little girl out of the way! Understandably human nature I guess but still.

Mirai's group got lucky to get on that first ship and are now on their way home. The journey continues. I'll definitely be sticking along even if later episodes has nothing but Mari smiling, Yuuki being cute, and Mirai glaring at people with a "you're stupid" look on her face. =D

also, this anime is still just ok, and I find it hard to believe that people would actually.. go to such extents to help others, but sure.. that's based on my own personality, so w/e ^^ oh well, except for all the moving people who just shove away people like that : D

also, Mari's weird, she's just.. plain odd xD

oh.. "how good it was of you to buy a juice, even if you almost died while at it!" =.='

and hey, why did the skyscraper break off in the middle?xD

Really? It's about 90 seconds after the ending song AFTER the commercial....Maybe they missed it?

anyway, it's only about 7 seconds. The preview is a news anchor saying one line that essentially summarizes the next episode. For episode 3, she said the bridge collapsed leading to many injured. For the next episode, she said that Tokyo tower start collapsing and rescue is on the work.

EDIT: wait , BSS included the preview in episode 1 at the very end. But they left it out for the subsequent episodes. :/

This anime is really awesome. The whole episode had a unique sad feeling. City collapsing and panicking people. It learns how we get closer to each other in situations like this. To help out each other.
I can write a lot about it but I don't have time. To be short; I LOVE IT.

If it wasn't for Mari being there, I would probably grugdingly watch this show, Mirai is such a pessimist. It's alright to think logically, but she always thinks in the negative..@.@
Just hard for me, since I'm a major optimistic.
The wave part after the bridge part was scary to watch, but all was well in the end.
I was rather upset to hear the ending song..xD I couldn't believe that 20 minutes had passed. Can't wait until the next episode!

My way of doing things: Logical thinking, and usually thinking the worst possible scenarios that are theoretically possible (that way I can't be disappointed) *thumbs up* although I have no doubt about what I would be doing in a similar situation, which I have already stated in the thread for .. ep 2 or something. : )

Are you kidding me? The animation was good, it had some sad moments but representation of people is completely ridiculous. Furthermore, only 900 died? WTF?

Let me just point out to people walking like zombies not saying anything and completely oblivious to the woman with a screaming kid and a baby in a baby stroller. I mean come on. If you want to show how Mari cares about other people you do NOT need to represent other people as complete assholes who don't give a fuck about others, and especially here about little children. Let me go even further in saying how it is only males who are pissed off at the children when they get lost.

And once again I have to stress this out, only about 900 dead in the city where whose metropolitan area has 35 million people. Ok I understand that 6 million people have troubles with finding the way home, but what does this mean, everybody was on a picnic in some park, or some sort of open area where nothing can hit them. Come on. On the other hand i suppose they didn't want to put a large number of dead people because it is probably targeted at children or young teens who would, potentially, freak out. Or they maybe didn't want to be too catastrophic in their prophesying.

I learned something today. In the aftermath of an earthquake, always help children and pretend to be their parent. :p (Otherwise no boat for you!)

I don't know if it was intentional, but I found the guy failing to jump onto the boat funny. "Epic fail" was what came to my mind.

I liked how they showed Mirai and then Yuuki getting lost in the crowd, pushed around by the crowd's movement, like someone lost the ocean carried away by the waves against his will. And after that they showed actual waves flipping that second boat over with probably many people drowning for real. Nice analogy between nature and Men in this kind of situation, both presenting the same danger.

TokyoNeonLight said:

I don't think that's the reason, the younger audience probably wouldn't care especially in our world. "The death of one man is a tragedy, the death of millions is a statistic."

Strange. It's the same what thought. The episode seemed really short but that was just because it was IMO so really good near the end. So far, I like almost everything of that show very much. Can't wait for the next episode.

The most dramatic scene was that when you see the wave and the other ship - that was really intensive when all the people there fell into the water and you don't know who of them was able to survive...

Its the first day after the quake. So they have just started to sort things out. Such as sending help and looking for survivors underneath all that junk. I think that the amount of casualties will rise alot when the show progresses and they start to find bodies that have been buried under those collapsed buildings etc.

Ayways great episode, great anime. I recommended this show to my friends. I advice you guys/gals do the same =P

Earthquake happen frequently in Japan so their infrastructure is much better than your average antiquake. On the other hand, it happened in the middle of the day + only 900 is CONFIRMED dead merely HOURS after the event. It takes TIME to count dead people.

A little more real info here, if i recall there was a serious earthquake on Japan some years ago, it was a 6.8 - 7.x (can't remember) magnitude, and there were only around 50 deaths. Japan is the upmost well prepared country to get hit by an earthquake on Earth at the moment, so 900 people is a reasonable number. Plus they are all confirmed, you are missing the hundreds of thousands of missing persons.

Very good episode. Mirai still acts like a bitch, but it was really nice to see her comfort Mari at the end of the episode. It shows she really does know when to act correctly. I still greatly enjoy Yuki, and I'm happy that we learn a little more about Mari.

I'm quite relieved that I'm still very engaged and entertained by the show. I thought that after the last episode it would just be a cakewalk back home, but when they talk about 5.0 aftershocks, artificial islands (didn't even know they existed), failing infrastructure, and humanities capacity to be quite selfish sometimes and I'm starting to think it won't get as bad as I thought it would.

However, the Kobe (Hanshin) Earthquake still made 6000+ deaths with magnitude ~7 But it happened in the morning (5-6am) and the houses in that region were pretty old + there were explosions and fire due to gas leak. But that was more than 10 years ago...and they learned the lesson, in a hard way....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kobe_earthquake

It's really interesting that even the yakuza were distributing food and did charity to help the homeless.

Check the list of earthquakes here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_earthquakes_in_Japan

The list is in NO way comprehensive as there were at least 4-5 of magnitude 6.5 or higher in Japan in the LAST year ALONE, but less than 50 people in total died or went missing....

You have to check the list in Japanese Wiki:
http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%9C%B0%E9%9C%87%E3%81%AE%E5%B9%B4%E8%A1%A8#21.E4.B8.96.E7.B4.80

You got that right. Couple of weeks ago some girl got killed by a concrete slab that fell on her in Montreal and the following weeks the only thing you could hear about on TV was how she died and how it's such a tragedy. Never mind all other tragedies...

To all other people discussing about Japan and earthquakes. Not that I'm showing off here but I know a lot about Japanese buildings and their construction since I study architecture. And as far sa I remember the earthquake happened "today", episode 1 & 2, and "tomorrow" is the episode 3, so it's not just a few hours. And I'm pretty sure that rescue teams have been out in he field the whole night.

And somebody also said how they are constantly in danger.
They are the only danger to themselves. :D

And will somebody, who maybe went to Japan, explain to me how is it possible to have the signal for the news, but not the signal to make a simple call? Maybe I'm just not informed, or simply stupid.

Phone signals can get jammed just like phone lines. During a big disaster like this, so many people are making calls that it becomes a crap shoot to be successful.

It was the same during 9/11...making a phone call was near impossible. TV signals just go out so there is no problem to have them received.

It's a digital signal. It's quite well known that Japan and a few Eurpoean countries have a great infrastructure for the allocation of digital signals and bandwidth, allowing them to be able to do more with phones than at least in the US, and I'm assuming North America.

This was a very intense episode, I almost felt like I was there myself. I have a feeling this anime is gonna stoke some tears out of us in the near future.

So why the fuck no one talks more about this anime? It has a very compelling story. It has realistic characters. Good animation. What else? This might win my Most Underrated Anime of the year Award.
