Great episode but it's sad that they've removed the background story of Barry the Chopper they tried to really compact it in just making him say who he was but it didn't really give the same effect as with the original that he kidnapped Winry...

But I did find it quite sad the homunculus showed up and fucked up everything the story on how Edward first protects him now it's just show up and instant kill oh well they really wrapped it up good though but was better with the expanded version of the original...

Either way great episode! the story devolopment is going great :D

agree!!

they removed the backstory of Barry in which Winry was kidnapped(since she went to the central city due to a missing piece) and Ed was almost killed if weren't for Ross.

the fight between slicer is more intense but i felt like it was rush a little.

even when Ed joked that Slicer's legs is another brother didn't had the same impact as the first season.

Ed also defeated slicer but using the same technique from Scar.

they killed slicer and his brother too early. in the first season his brother sacrifice himself since he was already content on being called human.

it made Edward traumatize more than Lust killing him.

also they didn't show how in the first season Ed was forced to sacrifice the people due to Al being held hostage by Homunculus with Tucker alive.

not to mention the seal was upside down that would be cool :P

what about the "underground" people??

no mentioned of them??

all in all still amazing and fast paced, but i do wish sometimes they slow things a little bit to show more info about what's happening.

at least the "hurry up and get married" from Hughes is funny as hell(still i think the original did a better job.

i also have forgotten that Armstrong or any reinforcements didn't arrive at the scene when the building was being destroyed.

very surprising Envy is helping Ed out.

guess the original manga is very very different from the first season.

wasn't kimbley and the "underground" people supposed to escaped too??

I have to admit that FMA's animation quality is really impressive.

Not a comment specific to this episode...

I've watched the first series, and so far, FMA: Brotherhood is reminding of Hellsing vs. Hellsing Ultimate: the latter "fast-forwarding" through early stories and focusing more on action than character development. Plus more flashy comedy scenes and much, much better graphics. :)

That was my one and only point of contention with my #4 favorite anime of all time -- I like to get to know my heroes first so they don't end up as Generic Akshun Tuff Guy #38,183.

Not to imply that Alucard is a "hero" by any meaning of the word. Except perhaps the original Greek definition. But I digress. (Don't you love how pretentious that sounds?)

Anyway--

Here's to hoping FMA: B ends up like HU, in that this early stuff ultimately doesn't matter and that by the end, the finished product ends up far more epic, brutal, brutally epic and epically brutal!

Anime manages to produce these intensely annoying antagonists like the Envy guy. I really hop before the series is over he gets the living daylights beaten out of him.

I understand how someone who never watched the original series would be impressed with this turn of events, but being that I have I can't help but compare how the events happened in one series to the other, especially considering I just recently rewatched the first one.

So far, Brotherhood is proof that the build up is a very important element for any major event to have any impact. There's no build up, so a lot of the stuff which was shocking in the original series is falling flat here. I already knew this, but I did not expect it to get as severe as it did in this episode - EVERYTHING about the fifth laboratory was cushioned. The hype in the battle between Ed and Slicer, the drama of Al questioning his existence and the shock of Slicer's sudden destruction, but most importantly...
(2003 series spoiler)
I dunno if that happened in the manga, but it was a major, sinister event and it left a huge impression upon me - something the fifth lab ordeal absolutely does not do here. Honestly, the fifth lab here seems completely unnecessary, almost to the point of filler, rather than feeling like a major plot development as it should.

The story of Brotherhood had better be truly excellent once the diverging point appears to make up for the atrocities it is committing towards the drama and power of overlapping events. >.<

I really liked those slicer brothers characters.

Sad that they died before they at least got to tell Ed the stuff.

So far I don't really like the fights in the anime, they're kinda dull. Ed doesn't really do much for being such a renowned Alchemist. But the story is really good so it should pick up.

Are Envy, the lady and the cannibal fatty all Homunculus'? I've heard that this anime has a bunch of them and it would explain the transmutation circles on their bodies. I want to meet this 'father' guy, I'm guessing that's when the anime picks up. And I can't help but wonder if the 'father' is actually Ed and Al's dad who disappeared, he was supposedly really strong, right? Lol, if he was, it would turn into a 'Luke, I am your father' moment.
Pirates are evil? The Marines are righteous? These terms have always changed throughout the course of history! Kids who have never seen peace and kids who have never seen war have different values! Those who stand at the top determine what's wrong and what's right! This very place is neutral ground! Justice will prevail, you say? But of course it will! Whoever wins this war becomes justice!

Ed does fight like a monkey.

I really liked the music that played when Envy and Lust showed up. I like Envy too.

I had always felt like Al's doubt was pretty silly and superficial (for plot). Usually he comes off smarter than that. It's clearly psychological manipulation and there's a thousand reasons not to believe it. So hopefully this blows over in the next ep.

I also disliked how easily Al fell for Barry's words in the first series, manga and now here. You'd think that he would have a little more trust in his own brother than a criminal in a suit of armour =/. He needs a good wrench to the head coming his way. Hughes is hillarious as usual, great advice from a senior to a junior XD.

The stories converge towards the same goal even now, but the narrative is very much different from the FMA, everything is reduced to a single incident and the facts are told otherwise, but compared to the FMA narrative is punctuated by images and dialogues that still gives depth to history.

Yeah it's a shame, it's moving way too fast without any buildup, kinda missing 2003's take on it now :/

Great fight between Edward and the Slicer brothers. Pacing feels really fast, it feels like action scenes are always hitting me every other episode.

Great action scenes. The animation was really on a high level.

And unfortunatelly... Winry's mistake brought for Edward a bloody harvest, because during his duel with Slicer his mechanical arm suddenly stopped working, just after he decided to use alchemy.

Poor Alphonse. I hope that the doubt about his humanity, sowed in his heart by that meat cutter, will be neutralized soon.

I understand and sympathize with Alphonse's concerns. I mean, knowing what alchemy is capable of, it does seem like a plausible scenario. I'm sure he, whose existence is so fragile, has started doubting every fundamental thing he's once taken for granted. He feels disconnected from the world and rightfully so, every little thing can get to him.

Quite enjoyable episode by the way.

I actually liked the episode where Barry kidnaps Winry. I think there was more impact when they went to the lab, knowing he was alive the first time they met him.

I'm okay with the faster pacing if only for the fact most people have seen the 2003 version or read the manga before watching Brotherhood. But I personally found the first half of the 2003 series to be very good.

I guess I can't complain too much considering I understand they wouldn't want to reanimate anything that wasn't in the manga.

It's very interesting that the main enemies of the episode happened to be in the exact same state Alphonse is in. Serving as eternal watchmen to the gruesome process of transmutating a Philosopher's Stone really is something only cold-blooded murderers can do and be good at.

The Slicer Brothers were pretty cool guys who gave Edward a really tough fight and a lead to his long-sought after goal but had it tragically cut short because of the Sins tragically interrupting their chat. Envy was really brutal towards Lower Slicer and I winced at how cruel he (she's a guy what) dispatched of him because it looked so painful despite him being an unfeeling automaton with a soul marked to it. Barry just gave Alphonse an existential crisis while he's in the exact same situation as him before running for it, wow.

Envy and Lust saved Edward because they don't want him dying on them until that big day while Roy climbed up the ranks thanks to Scar's troublemaking.

We have 2 great fights in this episode.

Al vs Barry "The Chopper" was actually more Barry trying to brainwash Al into thinking he's not real, otherwise Al could have easily won

Ed vs the Slicer Brothers was though for Ed cause his automail was breaking, in the end he won though.

nice episode but i think i preferred FMA's version of the fights with ed and al, they were longer and allowed more development, and i liked that the head of the slicer brother got close to ed. getting the feeling that the storyline will start to change from FMA pretty soon

and the hughes-mustang post-ending scene was great! i love their friendship

Good episode, I wonder when we see Kimblee in action. Why show a character so often if he stays in a cell for the rest of the series? He probably still has his part to play...
Hughes and Roy wife talk was funny and Al should be too intelligent to fall for Barry's bait so easily.

Ultimately, I just don't really see the point in going to Lab 5 itself, since the only real point was to introduce Ed to Envy and cause Al's crisis of conscience. But really since Al's total trust in Ed is shaken by Barry's off the cuff remarks, this development only undermines Ed and Al's relationship...which is why I was never a fan of this turn of events. Hopefully it' s different in the manga, and therefore, Brotherhood.
I thought the point of them going was to check whether or not they WERE carrying out the human transmutations? They are 14/15 years old....still kids and curious. Makes sense to me, especially since they sneaked away hahahaha.

Rather than simple curiosity, I would ascribe it to a lack of trust. I mean, they just found out that Marcoh and General Grand performed experiments on live humans and that military higher-ups and possibly government officials knew about it. They even sanctioned using these stones for a genocide in Ishval. Knowing this, I would not trust military personnel to investigate for me and rather find answers myself.

I am happy that they did not give a forced reason to remove Ed from that place, Envy and Lust need him later, it makes sense for them to save Ed. Al's crisis of conscience was the most interesting element introduced in this episode. I hope it will be important in the future.

Things that I don't like? The comedy except for the marrying joke were placed in bad times and ruined a couple of serious moments. Also, for being serial killers, they don't look scary and are a joke. While I mentioned that the subplot of Al doubting his brother after Barry's words sounds interesting, I don't understand how he could allow himself to be manipulated by a serial killer, maybe he's naive.
