| THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- Wow, they really go for slow motion camera shots ...with the food movements. Weird episode. They did some sports gimmick with volleyball. Whatever, this show has a slice of life tone so I expect that they will cover a lot of the girls' daily lives including at school. And they also do more flashbacks with Machiko. Well at least the bento looked delicious.  |

| I have to admit I had trouble following them this time. In the end, it wasn't clear to me if Kirin made what Ryou wanted (what her grandmother made for her), or if Ryou simply tasted what she wanted to taste. Either way, it seems the only one who liked it was Ryou, but ultimately she was the only one that counted a far as Kirin was concerned ;) (though I feel a little sorry for Shiina and the other girls...) Wait, so was it Kirin's father who probably helped her figure out how to make that (based on that conversation in the truck)? | When I was young, my lunchbox was never that fancy. :P So Ryou-chan wasn't very athletic. Don't worry Ryou-chan! We still love you! <3 Kirin made a lunchbox for Ryou but even if it tasted "plain", Ryou loved every single bite. Oh, and there was.....a lot of leftovers, huh? xD |

| For someone so short, Kirin is quite athletic. Her moon-spike in the beginning was pretty awesome! I was expecting something when Kirin started stripping in front of Ryou. What a letdown.. Ryou's running scene was hilarious! The way she "became the wind" and ran in slow-mo was too much for me! XD Kirin requesting Shiina to dispose of the evidence of her mess-up attempts together was pretty funny too! But that also shows her sincerity as a cook. First time seeing Ryou enjoying foods which probably weren't that special in reality. Those pleasant expressions kinda ruined her image though.. Good episode. As always, chibi PV was too cute! This time, Ryou struggling to pull off the Dubiduba pose. >.< |

| I was shocked when those girls said that the obento was nothing special because the kind of lunch that me and like 99% of people from schools I've been to never had anything compared to that. Now looking back at all the obento I've seen in anime and real life, it isn't that special after all. Standard obento is just amazing compared to the standard American lunch box. Ryou in a ponytail is cute! Kirin making the obento for Ryou was a good sign of their friendship. I think Kirin and Ryou are related because Kirin's mother first talked about Ryou's grandmother as being her aunt but then she quickly changed it by saying Ryou's grandmother. |
| It was ok. We learn that Kyou isn't too much of an athlete if it wasn't already known, and her fails were pretty funny to watch. Sorta the same thing like last episode where Machiko doesn't make the food but rather her friends to. It was also interesting to see how nobody found the taste of Kirin's too impressive other than Kyou, who was gushing all over it in front of her classmates. Makes you sorta question Ryou and if her feelings toward the food were genuine or that she made herself that way because she holds Kirin is such high regard. |

| The variety of the food in that lunch box is out of this world! Considering that you're normally making enough for the lunches of a whole family, to have that sort of variety would mean you have to either cook in extra small portions, or waste a lot of excess food. That said, the bentou was so mouth watering, I found myself reaching for junk food (sobs) halfway through the episode.... Loving this show more and more... now if only I could reach into the screen and take the food out... |

| For me, the definition of a 'plain' lunch box would look like rubbish compared to the one Kirin made for Ryou. Higher standards maybe? Despite her Volleyball serve fail, Kirin is pretty athletic for her size, compared to Ryou. Seeing Ryou's mishaps playing sports in the past were funny though. XD |

| I want a Bento! I wouldn't care if Ryou or Kirin made it! They both look delicious! Also, I relate to Ryou in this episode, I have no luck at sports and always get injured. So it was nice watching her try to come out on top! I really like the sound of Kirin's feet... |

| Man its just not the same if I don't watch this as late night early morning as the sun is about to rise. Another fantastic episode, the park they were practicing at had a perfect night time atmosphere. We actually got a classroom scene lol I'm not sure if they mentioned that Kirin lived out in the country or not, but this was the first time we got to see her doing her return home routine. I love how Ryou loved Kirin's bento because it was made by her :D Looks like Kirin got worried over nothing. Was it just me or did the station look extra beautiful this episode? |

| Good episode, but kinda slow tbh. Ryou is really not good at doing in sports eh? XD Tbh i was hoping they would focus on her boobs more due to how big it is when she's running. Bento was kinda bland, though i'm sure the end food tasted good. Gotta love those Shaft stills! Can't wait for the next episode. |

| An episode that I really liked. Narratively had everything we wanted, which is a plot of the background on which to slide the culinary component and not as before when we dwelt only on the second element. Also useful to have other characters in addition to the usual cast and show a different context, as happened last time. Drawings with ups and downs, but being improved in the second part of the story. Sets and well-designed home furnishings. The concept expressed in early TV series, as it should be evolving. |

| This episode seems typical of the series; there is a strong focus on food, along with a few other bits and pieces of story. It is enjoyable but ultimately not highly memorable, like most of the preceding episodes. This is a rather strange series so far. I feel like I can interpret it in two ways, which are not necessarily mutually exclusive. In either interpretation, it succeeds more than it fails, but it is not quite what it could be. 1. It is a straightforward food porn show aimed at audiences that really love food. In this sense, it basically works, but there just isn't enough else going on to hold the thing together. It is relying too heavily on visuals, which are admittedly attractive, but more could be done with the characters and the stories. As it is, it would make a great 4-episode OVA, but there just isn't enough material to properly fill a 12-episode series. 2. It is an oblique satire or commentary on the clichés relating to food that are common in slice-of-life anime series. It seems almost obligatory for slice-of-life anime to feature scenes in which cute girls eat food, rave about it, and while eating it, make sounds that nobody would make in real life. By exaggerating this cliché, it draws attention to it and makes it seem rather ridiculous. In this interpretation, I find the series to be successful but not wildly so; if this were its primary purpose, I might expect even more exaggeration and slapstick humor. Again, the series is rather repetitive and might be better as a 4-episode OVA. The series basically works, so I will give it a score of at least 6, but to do better than that, the remaining episodes will have to show a good deal of improvement. All in all, it is a cute and pleasant series, decent but ultimately somewhat forgettable, albeit with occasional moments of brilliance. I love slice-of-life series, and I don't necessarily expect or even want them to have grand overarching plots, but in the absence of a strong narrative, they need to have other characteristics that capture the audience's interest. This one tries with the food porn aspect, but it can't seem to find enough interesting ideas within that concept to truly carry it. Plotless slice-of-life series usually rely on atmosphere and characters, and if they show creativity and uniqueness in either or both of these aspects, they are likely to be highly successful. This series only makes it part way. The atmosphere is nice but ordinary, and the characters are cute moeblobs who don't quite stand out from the crowd. For better or worse, I'll always remember Yui from K-On and Konata from Lucky Star, but the characters in this series will likely fade from memory not long after I have finished it. This does not mean that Koufuku Graffiti is a bad series; on balance, it is an enjoyable series, but it doesn't rise to the level of greatness. It is interesting that I posted this analysis while still part way through the series; ordinarily, I would leave something like this until the end. I suppose I don't expect anything much to change in the remaining episodes. |
