I watched 5 episodes of Durarara!! 1st season, and I did not like it too much. It feels like watching an episodic or slice of life anime about the daily lives of characters. I don't even know what is story is exactly about. Does this anime have any real goals ? Does it have an antagonist or enemies ? I prefer something that have a real story, not random shit.

Does this anime get any better later ? Or is more of the same shit ?

Also, many reviews say that it has likable characters. But in my opinion, none of the characters are likable, and there is noting special about them. Maybe the headless girl is the only ok characters, but the others are boring and generic.

That's the main point of the story telling, it's kind of random at first but later on the events all link up together. At the start I thought that Ryuugamine, Anri and Masaomi were boring but you get to see more of their real character later (well you only see Ryuugamine's true character in season 2). And Shizuo and Izaya are in no way boring characters >_>
This series definitely does get better later on (since the events are all explained) but this series does drag on a bit. Drop it if you don't like it, but you I definitely think this series is pretty damn awesome.

I really love the technique they use on having 3 or more stories at the same time and as the story progress they will connect to each other and on the finale it will be something big!

Anyways it's really better watching the series as a marathon rather than weekly like what I did on season 1 which was pretty epic I must say.

I like the unique and refreshing style of storytelling. all of the stories will actually connect on the later parts.

You should continue it and give it a second chance.

Enjoying seeing some new characters emerge, and seeing more of characters touched upon in the first series.

I kinda want some huge developments with the more normal characters like Ryuugamine now

At first, when I was watching Durarara season 1, I didn't understand any shit until some certain episodes. However, as I kept watching, it got better, better and much much better. And it turned out to be a very enjoyable one.
I really enjoy this anime, very much. And the best things about this anime are the characters and the way the story is explained. This is a very unique anime, and you can only understand it by watching it all. I recommend you to watch it.

Mainly i love the unique storytelling. Its so smooth and fun to follow, and the fact that so many characters are relevant to the plot now makes things even better. This leads me to believe a war in Ikebukuro will start soon, and a true one. The first season started off weak for me too, with all this Dollars shit I didn't understand, and I kinda disliked Ryuugamine at the beginning, but you will see later that he becomes a very good one (Not spoiling anything for your sake). Izaya and Shizuo are both very good characters, their relationship is always amusing, and how Izaya trolls him in their fights. The characters interactions are one of the best factors in this show too, they build up a great atmosphere, along with the noisy city, it almost feels like you are living in it. I could go on more, but this season 2 completely blew me away with its awesomeness. I recommend you to keep watching

Give it some time. I started the 1st season a few weeks ago and I didn't like it much at first. The story didn't really go anywhere for like the first 11 episodes. To me it was good but a little boring. However, after the first half, it picks up and everything starts to fit in place. There's a lot of secrets that will be revealed and it gets really interesting. Watch some more and if you don't like it after the secrets are revealed then this series might not be for you and that's perfectly fine. The storytelling here is a bit different and unique in it's own way, but I understand it might not appeal to everyone.

I felt the same way as you did but it did get better. I like the characters, the way of story-telling, how almost each episode had a different protagonist... It's really unique, hit or miss I guess.

You just have to appreciate quality writing to enjoy this anime. I say that because some animes have pretty chaotic and jumbled nonsense thrown into the story to keep people interested, but this doesn't happen. Durarara is a lot like reading an amazing book. You are not sure where things are going until the midway point, and once the stories of different characters start connecting and paths starts intersecting, it's a memorable experience.

This might come off as kind of pretentious, but it's my honest opinion. Very few, if any, animes are like Durarara.

Duh.. if you really don't like or understand the concept or story about the anime on the first season don't force it.

and for me the story now pretty much easier.
Skill 1 - Mask Maker.
Skill 2 - Binding Spell.
Skill 3 - Conceal Darkness.
Skill 4 - Mind Shield..

the characters.

because of the way the story is structured, the first season starts off slow. it doesn't pick up until all of the characters have been introduced and the plot has been pieced together a bit.

I love the Pulp Fiction style story telling. So many strange and interesting characters with the story being told from all their different point of views.

Also, for me, it's just very stylish and cool. Admittedly, the main character, if you can call him that, is the most boring and pathetic character in the series, but all the others make up for it and get plenty of spot light.

This is a small thing, but it is important: the incidental music in this show is awesome.

The piano and flute sequence with Ryuu, the music when the Orihara younger sister threw the tacts, all the music fits the characters perfectly.

Japanese sound directors are the best, this show just confirms this truth.

Yep. Izaya's theme from season 1 is great as well.

I don't know why you said the characters are generic, because I think they're unique.

This.

No there's no real antagonist here, at least not in 1st season (because I heard there's actually one in later volumes of the novel). It's like "let's put these insane characters in one city and see what happens." Don't force it if you don't like it.

1 word. Shizuo.
But it's important to remember that a movie review is subjective;it only gives you one person's opinion.

It doesn't matter if you like LoGH,Monster etc.If you are a jobless or college/school dropout living in your mom basement, you are still an unintelligent loser. Taste in anime does not make you a better person. If elitist don't exist, casual pleb and shit taste also don't exist.

Durarara is one of those anime one can make seem more pretentious than the Monogatari series by thinking about it too much.

ugh, pretentious is not synonymous with unconventional narratives.

Eh? The Monogatari narrative is as conventional as it gets, isn't it?

I agree with you there, this does have a pulp fiction style story telling which a lot of anime dont have. Lols you haven't seen the main character's TRUE nature yet!

I thought you were calling it pretentious because it attempts to be essentially dialogue driven ( a lot of people do, so I apologize if i made the wrong assumption)

I see. That's not quite what I was saying, but it does facilitate pretentiousness. Particularly since not much of the dialogue is relevant to the immediate plot. Also, Shaft animated it. Having said that, me calling anything “pretentious” is always a light remark. If it really were so pretentious, I'd put in some effort to understand why.

I remember watching the first season a good while back, but I cant for the life of me remember any of the characters except Shizuo and... no that's about it. And then there is the story, was there ever one?
Now watched the first episode and everything was just a blur, jumping back and forth, and they even introduced new characters?
This is to much of a slice-of-life with a dash of clusterfuck to scramble everything around, wich I can't digest.
I'm out, I'll leave this soup for the rest of you to eat.

For me, I enjoy it EXACTLY because there is not only one main villain and one objective.

How these characters interact and how their individual stories intersect with each other is a real draw for me. Not to mention the nice character design. It's like a lesser Baccano but with a bt more "street" atmosphere.

oh, and the OST's pretty nice too
