Oh my god "pretentiousness overload". Throwing all the terms and philosophical concepts around like they're candy, you're so indulgent in them that you start to contradict yourself Makishima. You say society no longer cares about ideals, yet you also kill your puppets for simply not amusing you. And it doesn't add to your character as much as detracts from it. Rikako's "art" didn't feel genuine, but a rather perverted depiction of what an artist does and falls into such an abyss. I'm not saying it's not possible, it's badly executed.
You can throw these concepts and quotes all day but they are meaningless when you don't back them up with action or actual evidence instead of broad strokes and labeling(wait, isn't that connected relativism?!). I can feel this is nonsense and is putting me to sleep.

For those wondering, the quotes that Makishima was saying are from Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus. Interestingly enough, he was jumping around the scenes a lot. Let's recap what he said.
Spoilers about Titus Andronicus below. I put all the quotes in the spoiler to shorten the post length.
So should I rob my sweet sons of their fee:
No, let them satisfy their lust on thee.
Tamora, Act II, Scene 3 [said in response to Lavinia's pleas not to be raped]
The hunt is up, the morn is bright and grey,
The fields are fragrant and the woods are green:
Uncouple here and let us make a bay
Titus, Act II, Scene 2 [said by Titus during the Royal Hunt]
They told me, here, at dead time of the night,
A thousand fiends, a thousand hissing snakes,
Ten thousand swelling toads, as many urchins,
Would make such fearful and confused cries
Tamora, Act II, Scene 3 [said before her sons murder Bassianus]
Listen, fair madam: let it be your glory
To see her tears; but be your heart to them
As unrelenting flint to drops of rain.
Demetrius, Act II, Scene 3 [said to Tamora to get her to listen to Lavinia before she is raped]
So, now go tell, an if thy tongue can speak,
Who 'twas that cut thy tongue and ravish'd thee.
Demetrius, Act II, Scene 4 [said to a ravaged Lavinia]
Write down thy mind, bewray thy meaning so,
An if thy stumps will let thee play the scribe.
Chiron, Act II, Scene 4 [also said to a ravaged Lavinia]
Her life was beast-like, and devoid of pity;
And, being so, shall have like want of pity.
Lucius, Act V, Scene [one of the last lines of the play, said about Tamora]
Analysis time.
First off, if we take the literal route, Rokako Oryo is playing the part of Titus' daughter Lavinia. Lavinia is raped by Chiron and Demetrius, who were persuaded to do so by Aaron (who I believe is played by Makishima). Her hands are cut off and her tongue is cut out so that she can not speak or write down the name of her offenders. The parallel here is obvious, Oryo's cell phone has no reception (her tongue being cut out) and her hand is cut by the robot dog. I suppose the weird hunter man could be Chron or Demetrius, but to be honest it probably doesn't matter.
Other than that, it seems Makishima is just being choosy about the lines apart from context and applying them to Oryo. The second quote is about a hunt, and Oyro is hunted. The fourth quote implies that Makishima will not listen to any excuses about Oyro's failure. The fifth and sixth quotes are physically applied to Oryo. The final line is said about Tomora, not Lavinia, but Makishima is seemingly just applying it to Oryo directly. Makishima has clearly prepared these quotes, which means that he probably knew Oryo would fail him and that he would have her hunted and killed. It seems he was just rubbing some Titus quotes in her face since she's familiar with the play.
This whole arc so far has had a ton of Shakespeare references. For example: the class recites from Twelth Night in episode 6. At the end of episode 6, Makishima was discussing the fate of Lavinia with Oryo. For those wondering, Lavinia was eventually killed by Titus in an honor killing because she was raped. Oryo quotes "Because the girl should not survive her shame, And by her presence still renew his sorrows", which was said by Saturninus to Titus regarding Lavinia in Act V, Scene 3. If Oyro is Lavinia, Makishima may also be Titus in a way, as he had her "honor killed" for not performing up to his standards.
If I'm right in comparing Makishima to Aaron, it's interesting to note that Aaron's last words were that he wished he could only do more evil. Another interesting point is that Makishima is ALSO being unoriginal by turning Oryo's death into a Shakespeare farce of sorts. The guy may enjoy entertainment, but I do not think he is some artistic genius. Though, I don't think it was implied that he is. Rather, I think he wants to supply the artistic geniuses with the tools to get things done.
In summary, Makishima is insane. For the future, since there are flags in at least two episode for Shakespeare now, be on the lookout for parallels. However, Shakespeare might have only been utilized for Oryo's arc.
This was fun to write and research. Please, anyone feel free to disagree with me regarding my short analysis or anything regarding the play. I'm familiar with the play, and I also went back to confirm context... but that doesn't make me a scholar in it.

Thanks for this analysis man. The Shakespeare lines were just going in one ear and out the other.

Thank you very much. :)
I actually didn't understand at all the meaning of those words 'cause I've never read that story in the past.
Kougami joins and makes progress with the case. Too bad Rikako escapes.
Although she gets a headshot. Finally, an actual gun! (^_^)
But still Dominator is OP.
Kougami, watch out. Makishima found you.
I’m always searching for something, for someone. This feeling has possessed me I think, from that day… That day when the stars came falling.
Sad that Oreo-senpai had to die. That was inevitable to say the least. I wonder what those chemicals or resin is made of.. Makishima seems to be a vile and a devilish person in nature who uses cunning but straightforward methods to covet the 'toys' into his lure without breaking a sweat. But, all that won't be easy when he faces Kougami
And so should I rob my sweet sons of their fee? No, let them satisfy their lust... on thee.
Gold. Shougo is gonna be an incredible villain.
Brina was beautiful as always as Rikako. Loved her pretentiousness when Rikako was trying to be all philosophical in the art room while talking with Shougo.
The police are useless without the enforcers. They rely too much o Sibyl to find out the suspect. It's a good that Kougami used old fashioned detective work to find out the real culprit.
I actually want to give my version of what it symbolizes.
I think it was done like that to show that in thee end Rikako's thinking was not humane anymore thus the head disconnecting from the body.
That her work is all worth mud now and is thrash. Hence the head flying into the dirty water if not sewer water that is plain filthy. In other words it's to show he mind and work were all but filth despite her meaning of it and that of her father.
Anyone else thinks her death was done that way to show that out and not to be brutal but symbolic?
I applaud to your insight in this ep. You should be a criminal profiler like in Criminal Minds.
Great ending for this arc! Still, it was a bit too twisted for my taste lol. I'm just glad that she got what she deserved in the end!
Kougami is fantastic though! And now that Makishima has taken an interest in him, it makes me think of Sherlock and Moriarty. Will Makishima start designing his plans around Kougami in a sort of game to see if the Enforcer can solve the case, that sort of thing?? Whatever happens, I see this series getting even better from here on out! ★ 5/5
Aw deary, to waste such beauty away, expected though it was. Still, poor Rikako, her art could have blossomed some more.
At least, Makishima is now confirmed to be beautiful as well, which is compensation enough for the loss.
Dissecting people is the best hobby.
The only thing I didn't like was when the schoolgirl went on the run, the principal/senpai was like "Stop she's a minor" to which the reply was something like "We don't have separate laws for youths" or something.
That was a weird line to randomly throw in there, kind of forced. It was like they threw that in ala "Oh in case you are wondering about this extreme dystopian justice system, minors are trialed as adults" because I'm sure if you oversee a prestigious girls school you would have at least a layman's understanding of the law as it applies to young adults
Who is this old school hunter fellow anyway? I know Makishima was talking to him a few episodes ago, but still no info on him.
I'd love to see more of the tattooed man inside the asylum. He'd be interesting no doubt.
This felt like the first episode where they all worked as a team and it was awesome to see. This series gets better and better in my opinion. Hopefully, the momentum will roll on.
It's a waste to kill Rikako that fast. Really a waste. They developed her character for 3 episodes just to make her a pawn. They could've just used the fat guy from the earlier episodes.
I still dont understand how coefficient criminal works, are the number of coefficient increase after someone do crime or before it ? Because when dominator pointed to Rika its say 400 coefficient..
God, this whole police division is so inept. Can't catch a single, adolescent girl. How did she manage to fool them with that simple trick? Earlier, they had the same problem with the Talisman impersonator. I can't help but think how many victims die due to their slip-ups. Also, why is the first thought to kill the unarmed suspects on sight? Apprehend them, interrogate, and get closer to catching the mastermind.
One more thing I can't stand is pointless philosophy. I don't understand the motifs of any of those people. Are they just classic literature fans who chose a life of crime just to recite quotes for dramatic effect?
Eudaimonia said: I can see why Makishima was not impressed by Oryou's elaboration of her view on how society instrumentalises young girls and treats them as objects, since she is actually guilty of doing the same by using them to create her statues.
In the end Oryou never could step out from her father's shadow who she even turned to in a last desperate attempt to escape her horrible demise by making a phone call.
It's ironic how she got featured as someone who creates artworks with a deep message in the last episode only to be degrated to an artist lacking originality and profundity this time around and who prefers style over substance as she gets abandoned by her patron who "sponsored" her artistic creations. Though it's not uncommon even in our world to fall out of favour with the critics from one day to another.
On another note, the convicts all seemed like addicts or people who were obsessed about something. It's all the more understandable why people seem to be so concerned about not getting addicted e.g. to alcohol and other drugs, if ending up in places like this is the consequence.
Beautifully said. Excellent interpretation and summary
That last "sculpture" was really messed up. I have been watching horror, with a fair share of gorn for a long time, so it is not often that something grotesque gets to me and I couldn't help but feel bad about that situation. Those poor girls. Also, the surviving friend will be consumed with guilt for so long.
I want to see someone taking away that cocky smile from Makishima's beautiful face.
The whole series thus far has been pretty interesting plot wise, but is missing a lot with character development. This episode does a good job concluding this school arc and ends with a pretty satisfying death of the main antangamist. Although the events that occurred involving the deaths of the other students seemed to be pretty hollow due to lack of character development, it was pretty emotional episode
I don't get it! why did Makishima killed her?! it was pretty stupid, she still could be useful
and wtf kou meant her art lacks meaning?!! it lacked originality but how the fuck he knew that? totally unconvincing
Rikako sure liked her metaphors which might've been the reason why Makishima was so interested in her. They both liked pretentiously reciting somber literature after all but the lady was seething of hypocrisy after she started criticizing the societal roles of women by saying that it turns them into factory-produced objects while literally turning teenage girls into dolls for everyone to see. Her murders apparently lacked originality because of the aura these menacing artworks are too similar to the Specimen Case and have a very clean quality to it. It's as if it was perfectly imitated from an earlier reference, in this case being her deceased dad's artworks.
Shinya found out the culprit way quicker than Ginoza and the others did even if he wasn't overseeing the case in the first place. Having connections with expert prisoners obsessed on their favorite subjects really comes in handy.
I was a bit peeved that the principal prevented Shinya from shooting down Rikako because even if she was a teen, she killed four girls her age and her Crime Coefficient's a whopping 472. She died a worse death in the end though because her boss really doesn't like playing with toys who are incompetent enough to get caught. She died a filthy death fit for such a pitiful being who believed themselves to be different.
Angelic_Fortune said: Am I the only one that thinks Rikako got off easy with a headshot considering she probably tortured those girls?
You're psycho-pass is looking mighty cloudy there, bud.
Ok, so I'm only watching this anime after several years, and not much is to be added to the conversation regarding this show, but goddamn, still. The action's building up quite nicely, and the tension in each case is good. I can't wait to watch the next episode.
Great episode, that girl certainly got what she deserved in the end. Seems our main baddie has a group of people working for him, and I wonder how much control he has over things. This shows getting pretty darn good
All weebs creatures of the galaxy, hear this message. Those of you who listen will not be struck by western animation. You will no longer know hunger, nor pain. Your Anime have come to lead you now. Our strength shall serve as a luminous sun toward which all intelligence may blossom. And the impervious shelter beneath which you will prosper. However, for those who refuse our offer and cling to their western animation ways… For you, there will be great wrath.
I am certainly not surprised as to why Makishima found Ouryou disappointing at this point; I mean sure she was a complete psychopath and was expressing her artist talent in a creatively constructive way but it was not even from her own imagination! She was just copy and pasting her Father's artistic pieces and making them into 3D versions! Miss please if you are going to be a psychotic murder yuri artist at least incorporate your own originality into your projects! Thank you very much 😤 even Kougami was able to see your works were unoriginal just after your second piece!
Then that whole spiel she gave about this academy molding young girls into ladies started out well and good enough but then you had the whole ending claiming they would end up living dull and boring lives >:3 they most certainly would not they would be alive and beautiful integral parts in raising the next generation hopefully with more warmth, emotion and humanity that Mother's foster because it seems like this world could use more of it ^-^
At least when they are alive they have a chance to improve things what you are doing is snatching their futures away with your hypocrisy! Plus didn't they mention that schools like this were not really used or in existence in this present day anymore? That would mean this kind of upbringing in this society would be rarer and could possibly blossom several individuals with a perspective on life that could positively affect or change the world around them making them living works of art contributing to society! Your art is merely superficial and built upon your narrow outlook on this world; you are unable to grow from that perspective you find yourself in! No wonder why Makishima discarded you!
Poor Mika :'( I believe her dismissive not get involved attitude towards Kagami was a call back to the previous episode where they referenced this society negatively affecting people's senses and abilities to feel she seemed to be one individual on that pathway potentially. Glad Yayoi was there to comfort her and encourage her let her tears out so she does not get clouded; never forget Kagami and Ookubo 🥺 Mika their memories will live on with you and perhaps from this tragedy it will help your personal strength and emotions growth into the future!
Thankfully Ouryou got her comeuppances by the end (and yeah I agree with most people here for what she did to all those poor girls she really did earn a lot worse and got off easy by the end; at least in my opinion)! My eyes went wide and I smiled at hearing she had a 472 rating with that kind of rating I was surprised she seemed scared towards the end; a conscience that clouded I expected her to be so rotten in the head and heart that torture would not even affect her (makes me wonder what rating Makishima and his other subordinates have)! But, it was cathartic to see her chased down by the mechanical mutts (I too was expecting them to bite her but razor tails are effective too I suppose), caught in a bear trap and then ultimately have her head blown clean off O-O all while knowing the feeling that her victims felt in their final moments; sheer terror and helplessness!
And even in her final moments she still did not understand why Makishima discarded her; no it was not just because he was bored of you it was because your philosophy did not adapt or grow beyond its base origins and people like that are doomed to be a hindrance in the future even if they do provide some entertainment!
Also, I thought the monologue from Tamora Queen of the Goths from Titus was actually very fitting in this particular sense because it was already referenced in this arc and perfectly matched Ouryou's downfall! I sometimes find monologues of famous works in other pieces of fiction to sometimes be a cover and cop out for writing your own dialogue however, Takahiro delivered those lines with such character and understanding that it hooked me into the whole speech. Plus it was clear that the writer(s) wrote a story around these monologues/philosophies instead of using them in place of a story/creativity!
Thus, the end result (at least for me) was on hell of an episode and a great way to close out this particular arc! I cannot wait to see more :D
Although a little contradictory, Makishima seems to be the ultimate boss, hope they develop him more and doesn't let him slip to the "plot convenient" side.
Kougami is thinking on another lever and I feel like Ginoza is afraid, not just of thinking and getting more inmerse in the criminals mind, but afraid for Shinya to get worse.
I'm liking this one so far, as in general I like my animes a little -too much- gory.
I'm going to miss the yuri undertones Rikako brought to this series.
I'm also not impressed by all the references. Usually I'll be the first to eat it up, but they can't even keep them as central points to return to. They just keep piling it on and it's becoming trite :/
