I wasn't expecting that her punishment is to simply clean the temple. I was hoping that she might be banished to another world or something. Anyway, it's a good thing that the tension of the story is back to normal. Nevertheless, we found out more about the past.

The post that I made last time hit the jackpot. She managed to overcome her sin. This proves that their existence is a merely a reincarnation of human beings. Perhaps, they possibly had a previous life before they were born into this world.

Who knows what will happen next? I will be taking a break after this episode since I don't want to finish this in one sitting.

this anime is great. I love the slow pace, it makes you ponder over the story and each episode
it's slice of life but actually has substance. I'm enjoying the mystery it comes with, it makes me smile to know that there's something that I still have to figure out.

Someone said the town it might be like purgatory. It makes sense, but I don't want to think that. I feel like this story is more unique than that. If it were purgatory, wouldn't it be equal opportunity for the Haibane to be forgiven for their sins? Reki was born without that chance-she didn't remember her dream from the start-how can she remember something she has no recollection of whatsoever? Not at all equal opportunity.

And what's hyokho's deal? Will he always be in Glie like Reki?

love the score. the OP an ED are so calming

As this series has progressed, it has grown on me significantly... similar to the simple nature, but mystery of ARIA.

that was a lie she told reki. she didn't receive a punishment as such. she was just given that job of collecting the stuff for the halo. i guess she figured telling reki or the others that she went inside the walls wouldn't be a good idea.

Inside the wall is beautiful. I'd like to work in there. I wonder what kinds of creepy things will pop up?
I really want Reki to talk to that Abandoned Factory Boy.

This anime is so calming. The music is lovely!

Finally seeing Reki’s past was really nice. Even though her own life is basically anything but. It’s unjust, being born as a Sinner, unable to be blessed because you can’t remember your dream.

The insides of the walls seem like a mystic place, beautiful but quite dangerous on its own.

I like the Abandoned Factory guys, even if they’re rowdy.
I think, then procrastinate.
Therefore, I am.

One insignificant detail is bugging me.
Why do you think Kuramori slapped Reki when she cut her feathers?
Those black ones attracted negative attention, so what was wrong about getting rid of them?
I don't get why cutting your feathers is such a big deal. It's not like she was trying to kill herself.
New feathers will grow back.

Why would Kuramori force Reki to keep her negative "mark"?

Inside of the wall is a beautiful place. I wonder what the danger lurking there was.

It's not like we know what happens to those who are blessed on their day of flight but this makes me think it's a good thing. But as opposed to that what happens to those who aren't blessed by their day of flight seems pretty bad.. And I still wonder what determines when their day of flight comes, not being afraid of outside world seems to be one condition. Kuu's readiness to leave seemed to be influenced by getting to fulfill her dream of being a reliable example to others.

And something happened to Hyohko when he and Reki were running away but it doesn't look like he bears a grudge for that. And speaking of Abandoned Factory Haibanei, we have now seen two of them dislike Reki's smoking habit. I wonder what significance this has.

I think that they're both about not harming yourself coming from people who care about you.

With the smoking thing, its pretty obvious that the guy from Abandoned Factory has a thing for Reki (and even a past with her) and from someone who smoked for a lot of years, the more most people who truly love you nags you about not smoking, the more they care. This isn't to say that the Old Home Haibanes don't care about Reki, but they understand the complexities of her life and problems more (or respect her right to choose for herself.) Every once in a while I think "angels" not haibane, and think they are immortal in a way, but then realize that there are haibane in bad health like Kuramori and they can die... so I guess they would also be afflicted by health problems from smoking, too.

The wing thing I wondered about too. I haven't come up with a concrete answer, but it does seem like a form of self-harm too. If you cut feathers too low on a bird they can hurt or irritate them, which is (to me) not worth it for something that seems purely cosmetic. On birds, cutting feathers also messes with their functionality, especially flying, though as yet the wings on haibane don't have a function, as such, but maybe its more metaphorical. (Plus, the day of flight may involve flying? Not sure, but if it does she won't be able to leave if her wings are clipped/deformed and she can't fly.) It also seems that only Nemu was put out by them being spotted, Kuramori was more worried about her being sick, and it was more that Reki herself hated them more than anyone else and so she's in a sense deforming herself for hating how she's different from other haibanes. It doesn't make the Sin-bound thing go away, after all, it just causes her stress and self-conscious feelings. Its the only thing I came up with so far.

wow the inside of the wall was such a beautiful place, but im sure something is going to happen there, not sure what yet though..

Reki has totally grown on me the past few episodes her character has developed nicely, and I feel so sorry for her, being born a sinner, yet she still stays strong. I want her to to at least talk to that factory boy, its so obvious they have a thing, she needs something good in her life, even if he is a rowdy so and so xD

Some people speculate that those who can't remember their Cocoon Dream are child suicides. So they spend this life redeeming themselves by loving and serving others.

She's mutilating her wings. Clipping her feathers hides her black feathers temporarily but it's not the right way to solve her problem. In fact, it only exacerbates the situation.

The closest example I can think of now is imagine you have a large gash on your arm. You pick at the scabs and it starts bleeding again. It gets infected, inflamed, and excretes pus. Instead of finding medicine and clean bandages you just keep picking away at the pus hoping your body will stop producing it and heal itself.
A good author leaves the audience enough material to be satisfied with, yet yearning for more.

I found myself crying at Reki's past, how reserved she used to be and they way Nemu had first treated her. But what was more heartbreaking/touching was when Reki found out that Nemu wants to see Reki leave first, but Reki doesn't want to be a burden to her. Reki goes through a lot of internal conflicts, first being envious (kind of) of Rakka who is no longer sin-bound, and then second wanting people to have their Day of Flight but at the same she doesn't want to be left behind. She's definitely my favorite character so far.

I always interpreted that a haibane can not move on until they a) overcome and recognize their own sins and b) actually want to move on.

Reki is especially tragic because she has neither. She has been battling the cycle of sin since she was reborn and since she is so bent on the past and afraid of people leaving her, she doesn't want to move on. Even when the communicator says it's inevitable that The Day of Flight comes to everyone and that there is an actual time limit, she is still deeply invested in her sin.

I've always speculated that Nemu probably has recognized her sin for the most part, but won't leave because of worrying about Reki so much.

Rakka sure didn't waste any time getting better. Interesting job she got there, cleaning inside the walls.

So what did those columns say? Are we charging our laser with dead Haibane? (I watch too much mecha...)

This episode is confirming that Reki is the "real" main character. I can't help but wonder if Rakka will be the one to help her move along. (though I'm curious what happens if she doesn't)

I've been thinking this for the last few episodes. I can't tell if Reki is just the deuteragonist or the real protagonist.

Wasn't a punishment at all. That's just what everyone else is meant to think. The punishment's the fever. And Haibane are supposed to not fear the wall (even though they're told to). Makes a fitting job for her.

So what happens if they live past their time of flight? Turn to crows?

The first half of this episode was I think a little hindered. Simply by the fact we'd heard most of it already from Nemu and Rekki talking about their past to Rakka. There was something powerful about actually seeing it though. Particularly Reki's birth and the early tension between her and Nemu. It may have been redundant but it was powerful. And the added details did increase our understanding of Reki's character.

Her conversation with the Communicator was a highlight of the episode for me. His statement that he was merely voicing the doubts in Reki's own heart felt wrought with meaning. Is that all he ever does? He did explain new things concretely to Rakka last time right? Still the idea he gives voice to that Reki is a burden on Nemu was too sad. Especially Nemu's confused sympathetic reaction when Reki asks her that later. The idea of holding your friends back and being a burden to them is a common feeling in depression. And the series continues to use the nature of Haibane as a moving exploration of that.

I thought Rakka's punishment would be way darker. Not even like some torture chamber stuff. But I thought it was like now she has to be a Tora inside the wall forever. Was kind of surprised when she met up with Reki on the outside near the end. Right now Reki is probably going to get further from Haibane Nirvana or whatever as Rakka begins to find peace of mind and move on. I feel (hope) at this stage that the ending will be Rakka refusing to leave Reki behind though. Whether they both meet the fate of the expired Haibane together, or she helps Reki move on first remains to be seen.

DISAPPOINTINGLY SMALL WALL OF TEXT TO LAY BEFORE THE WISE PATRONS OF MYANIMELIST FORUMS SPECIFICALLY PERTAINING TO EPISODE TEN OF HAIBANE RENMEI

• The Communicator seems to KNOW when Reki’s Day of Flight will come. Either he has special access to this information or that he can sense when Haibane are nearing their Day of Flight from the way they act.

• This seems to be a Reki-centric episode.

• “You know what becomes of a Haibane whose time expires before she becomes ready to take the Flight”. So the Haibane really can die.

• The falling snowflakes when Reki and the ex meet up again have far too high FPS and fall down too fast. It’s grating when juxtaposed against the character models.

• Honestly, I don’t have much to say about this episode. We got to understand Reki more. We found out that you can actually go in the walls and something lurks in there. The Communicator is intensely perceptive. I enjoyed it once again, but it wasn’t anything big.

I liked that mask-wearing-guy and little of his (truth) speech to Reki shooked her mentality.. That indeed was kind of evil thing he said yet I think sooner or later Reki would come to become envious of Rakka given by how she suffered throughout her past by her (unfortunate?) black wing.

1) Snow animation was downright awful.
2) Reki's acting like a jealous bitch.
3) "Rakka gets to clean the inside of the walls. So cool!" -- said everyone in the comment section
4) All the characters are pleasant with (implied) tragic backstories, but their overall personalities are rather superficial.
5) The story habitually dawdles to, more or less, preach about redemption and forgiving oneself. Both of which become obvious to the viewer very early on, but seem incomprehensible to the main cast of characters (particularly Rakka).
6) The wall seems like a metaphor for "passing over to the other side." Hence, there will be no "payoff," in terms of showing the viewer what "heaven" looks like. We cannot perceive ultimate happiness, so any imitation will look second-rate or cheesy.
7) Perhaps I'm already in purgatory and watching terrible anime is my punishment for all my sins....

So Rakka may have sacrificed something in order to get her sin absolved, but what was it?
I wonder what will Reki do in the next episodes, as it was implied her Day of Flight was near.
