I get the feeling Rudy might not be an actual player and maybe some something else. That or I'm over-thinking and he was actively rejecting friendship out of fear of something..

I'll agree a bit. Seems quite anticlimactic when they declare that there are no more enemies, and no more enemies appear. Quite sure I would have wanted to see that Burning Dead at the blast furnace. O.o

Weve just been spoiled by Attack on Titan. "Oh everything is clear where fine gu-" SPLOSSH A MOTHERFUCKING GIANT TITAN APPEARS AND STOMPS EVERYTHING TO DEATH.

In this anime clear means clear.

Or it's just because of budget and time constraints lol. But the Burning Dead fight was only mentioned in passing so it's understandable why they cut it. But the boss item they got (gloves that increase magic damage) was given to Rudie. It could have been more rewarding to have shown that particular bit. After all it was their first dungeon clear w/ proper rewards.

It wasn't really mention much in the LN either, but it's really not that important so I'm not surprise it was cut off.

The ending, would be nice if they make those swarm of fish look more menacing for epidemic doom, lol. I'm not complaining or anything, the number of fish that was shown is still a devastating amount. I'm just glad it's not all cute looking, otherwise it would be hilarious to watch XD

I forgot to say this before, but if Rudy's really a NPC (/ People of the Land), then he seriously came extremely close to dying back when they first entered that dungeon. They even abandoned him there for a second when he had like 1 hit left... that's kinda scary thinking about it. :o

Well personally I'd say that WoW does nothing but use features that make the most money, rather than anything I'd consider actually good.

But MMO's were popular long before WoW ever came about. Everquest I and II, Dark Age of Camelot, Shadow Bane, Guild Wars... the list goes on (I think Lineage was popular too). They were plenty successful. It's just that WoW has completely taken over the business, through heavy / smart marketing, and at the right time. and hardly any other MMO's can find a place in the market. As far as I know the only two MMO's that stand up to WoW right now are Guild Wars 2 (single payment) and EVE Online (p2p). I don't think WoW is doing any good for the market... in fact I think it's causing MMO stagnation rather than preventing it... seeing as it's practically the only one still pay to play besides EVE.

Hehe. Well they didn't really change much from the novel illustrations so it's not like NHK did anything drastic regarding their appearance. Lol at the eyecatch and the googles wearing Sahuagin in this ep though.

Laughing at the foolish attempt of support to melee the enemy. There's a reason support is spell caster based for their classes.

Also, how the Hell does it take 2 seconds for those spells to be used? When Shiroe et al faced the bullies up north (forget their name), they performed all their spells in less than a second each. Plus, 2 seconds sounds really long for spells in a game like this.

Loved the "Rudy is a dog" thing. That's actually hilarious.

Also, the constant description of the game mechanics/roles is a little annoying. Then again, I know them well enough, generally, so it is repetitive for me. Might be more necessary for others.

How Rudy didn't figure out that fire and ice combo earlier is anyone's guess.

It's just like any game with spell cast-time, different spells take different amounts of times. Could also be affected by his level, or if they can level spells level of the spell.

I'm also familiar with them, but personally I enjoy them explaining it all... because not all MMO's are exactly the same, and since this is now virtual reality the particulars really make a difference.

Yeah, but basically all the spells in the beginning took less than a second. I understand different cast times based on spells, but I don't remember any spell early on that lasted that long.

Level makes sense, but it's quite a jump in cast time difference (1.5 seconds makes a huge difference in any online game). (Also, don't warrior classes generally have shorter cast times than spell-caster classes?)

Also, that "Samurai Challenge" did not take 2 seconds to cast, did it? Maybe it's being sped up?

Also, the constant description of the game mechanics/roles is a little annoying. Then again, I know them well enough, generally, so it is repetitive for me. Might be more necessary for others.

Right, and some terminology is different (like what they call "operator" or whatever is "support" in other games). Though I don't know of any game where one person's sole job is to look for incoming monsters (I would think that would generally be split up?). Of course, I don't really play much MMORPGs, so...

This is one major difference between Elder Tales post-apocalypse and a typical desktop MMORPG. Since they are fighting w/ a limited field of vision (what they're own eyes can see) instead of a 3d isometric perspective (not to mention the fact that they can't zoom-in/out the screen to keep track of the surroundings) they need to have someone actually bring up the rear to make sure no nasty surprises catch them off-guard.

The healer can be a good look out cuz he/she also needs to keep track of each party mates individual HP and provide support in a timely manner. Remember they can't keep track of their own HPs while in the middle of battle. It makes everything just that much more difficult.

A common mistake people make is comparing their situation to any typical desktop MMORPG like WoW. The circumstances are different. The controls are different. The game play was based on old MMOs but interwoven w/ reality.

Just to be safe. Some people aren't that observant and their minds only come alive when an action scene kicks in. You have no idea how many times I've been shot w/ "Damn you and your spoilers!" comments even though it was featured in the anime already. And besides that bit w/ her sub-class hasn't been mentioned yet I think. I could be wrong though.

Nothing has been explicitly stated even in the novels but basing on the fact that it was actually quite an old game it might have started out in 3rd person. Maybe 2d even. Expansions and patches kept the game alive and who's to say they were able to incorporate a first person view in one of the updates.

That still doesn't change the fact that they can't see their own HP while fighting mobs in their present situation. Even if ET was 1st person the UI and HP/MP/XP bars should have still been visible when it was still just a desktop PC game. They don't have that luxury now. It was stated explicitly in the novels but it was kinda glossed over here. Shiroe and Naostugu do discuss it in one ep though. This is specially crucial for front line fighters like Tohya and makes things that much more difficult.

Nope, Shiroe specifically mentions how combat is harder now since you can't "move" your perspective to see behind the mob you're fighting, or see the area around you easily. So it wouldn't have been 1st person.

Eh? They seriously can't watch their OWN HP and MP while fighting? I can understand that command menus are too cumbersome to navigate during combat, but surely they can bring up their OWN HP bar and leave it in a corner of their field of view while they fight.

Excerpt from Log Horizon LN Vol. 1 chapter 2:

When fighting in a party in Elder Tales like Shiroe and Naotsugu, you take note of your allies' HP through the status screen and choose the appropriate tactics and coordinate with each other almost subconsciously.

Will other enemies approach while you are fighting the enemies in front of you?

Will the enemy link up with more monsters or call for reinforcement?

Which enemy is the priority target?

Which foe can you keep at bay for now and take out later?

Various details like this are important elements that will affect the battle.

But it is hard to even confirm each other's HP in this environment. The HP values will be displayed if they focus on their forehead, but fighting in a dangerous place with debris all over while keeping track of these numbers in their mind is next to impossible.

Shiroe can still spare some time to observe the battle field as a mage. But the guardian Naotsugu has to engage the enemy on the front line to protect his allies and will lose the ability to grasp his surroundings, fighting almost blindly.

Credits to the translators and baka-tsuki.

Understandable. I don't think the sub-class change was in the anime, but how important is it? (Sorry, I plan to read the LN when finals are over.)

Nothing has been explicitly stated even in the novels but basing on the fact that it was actually quite an old game it might have started out in 3rd person. Maybe 2d even. Expansions and patches kept the game alive and who's to say they were able to incorporate a first person view in one of the updates.

So that's a "no, it's probably not first-person"? Just wondering.

That still doesn't change the fact that they can't see their own HP while fighting mobs in their present situation. Even if ET was 1st person the UI and HP/MP/XP bars should have still been visible when it was still just a desktop PC game. They don't have that luxury now. Wait, you're not serious? They can't see their own HP? Then wouldn't this make soloing dungeons and the like almost impossible? Not to mention the fact that your own knowledge of your HP and MP plays a huge role when your fighting. Like, if you're almost out of MP, you would use less MP-intensive skills, or avoid using MP--situation depending. But if you can't see...

See above LN excerpt for LN confirmation. Yes, they can't see their own HP that easily. They have to concentrate on their forehead for a bit so the display comes up. But try doing that while having blood thirsty monsters after your pretty, little neck surrounding you from all directions. Not all that easy right? It's the reason why a combat guild veteran like Krusty died a few times while familiarizing the battle system after the apocalypse.

Woohoo, newbies learning teamwork and cooperation to clear dungeons. One of the most basic concepts of any MMO. It's still great to see this show promoting the MMO-concepts of the show, but their arc kind of dragged for a while.

I'm guessing Rudy is actually a People of the Land? It'd explain his amnesia, but he's probably as strong as an Adventurer.

About the debate is rundel haus a person of the land or not, my guess is : if he got xp from killing monsters ( and I think the team would have noticed that he didn't level up ) then for me the theory that when you die too much you turn as a hybrid between adventurer and person of the land : you can still xp, learn new skills etc but since you don't have memories, you can't use the UI and thus can't be added to the FL.

If he didn't get xp, he is a person of the land from scratch IMO.

That is how i think it should be too. If his a "people of the land" then he shouldn't be getting XP or leveling up.
On the other hand seeing the explanations on the last episode it seems MP, HP etc are not something unknown to the people of the land and it may be natural to that world so how will they go becoming stronger?
Maybe Rudy is one of those NPC that are as powerful as adventurers that are heroes etc that they mentioned in the last episode.

There might be a good reason why Isuzu wasn't able to add Rundel to her friends list, but is that animation with a distorted interface supposed to be like that? Seems weird. Simply showing the stop sign and not adding him would be enough. This might be related to the mystery of Rundels exact nature, but for the UI to distort like that still seems weird. Especially given how it continues to work without issues, and shows consistent behaviour.

I read a good theory on Rudy that would explain a lot of thing. Rudy would be in fact an NPC, he have a green life bar like the NPC and also, he can't be put on friend list. Now, in itself, it doesn't matter much expect that he's not real, but I remember that they said that when NPC die, they don't come back to life. Also, in the OP, we see him die in Isuzu arm. I'm pretty sure it will come back later.

Shiroe continue to observe the NPC habit. He seem kinda bored.

The fishman made a surprise assault and the episode is called ''The Goblin King''. I guess that there will be a waar on a large scale.

More than just "People of the Land". Which would make sense why couldn't be on a friend list...

But also one of those "turned monsters" which is why they skipped discussing it much.

At least "some" fighting happened this episode.

Also they speak of "losing EXP" a lot. When are they going to level up? Or did they from clearing the Dungeon?
