My first DBZ film. I'll be honest; I really didn't care for it. The other films sound epic, and I will watch them, but this one just bored me, and while it had some funny scenes, that didn't save it from being a little under mediocore. Also, the villains were all so mind-numbing. Ugh.

It's a little weak, especially considering you are watching it "today"

Goku still looks pretty badass though, kicking those henchmen's asses!

Enjoyed this very much. The main problem of this movie is how it just re-uses the ideas from the Raditz arc. 4/5 for enjoyment and 6/10 because it doesn't have that much value.

My first DBZ film as well. Enjoyed it also. However I regret Tori sensei not to put something before it, following the pattern of 3 previous movies ( remember DB movie the 4th? ). There should be put sth about piccolo and then jump to DBZ movie 1 not to skip the content as they did but oh welll.

This felt more like a normal episode/filler than an actual filler, it was pretty okay but it was rather boring, but still a nice conclusion to this first movie, lets see what the next movie has to offer!

Originally I was going to watch all the DBZ movies after I finished DBZ but I decided that I would watch this movie (and 2, 3 and 4 (maybe 5 and 6)) before continuing on with DBZ (currently about to start the Garlic Jr. saga). This movie takes place before that saga so that's why I decided to watch it now and the next couple of movies take place before the Trunks saga so I might as well catch up with them. There's a list on Kanzenshuu that shows where each movie takes place and where you can watch them while watching DBZ despite the fact that all the DBZ movies technically take place in an alternate universe. The link is at the bottom of this post.

Drunk/High Gohan was pretty funny. It was a little jarring how Garlic Jr.'s English voice was practically identical to Emperor Pilaf's (now that I think about it, the character is too, except a lot more evil and less of a fuck-up). I guess Funimation were hoping that fans wouldn't notice. The fight scenes were pretty good, quite reminiscent of early DBZ/late Dragon Ball. We didn't get to see much of the actual Dead Zone, not sure if that is a good or bad thing. Overall, this was a pretty decent movie, much better than the first two Dragon Ball movies and a little better than the third one.

Same here. Who is Trunks?

But there was flashback in the series with scenes from this film! Besides, all the films have their relations marked as "side stories". And yeah, Gohan could forget about Kuririn since he didn't remember any thing, but I wondered how Kuririn could know Gohan before he met him for the first time later in the series. Maybe Kuririn forgot everything, too, since he got hit in his head so hard with that rock?

I positively disagree with you, maybe except the second film. The only good thing about this film was that song where Gohan got drunk, whereas DB films where much more funny

Lol this was a bit weird and the main enemy was really weak xD.
Best watched between ep 107—108, even though it happens somewhere after ep 3 of DBZ.

I kind of liked this movie. It had a lot more of the hardcore martial arts good vs evil feel that I expected when I started the dragon ball series. Goku's new voice actor was terrible, but I liked everything else about it. I have no idea what to expect for the next movies so I can't wait to see what they are about!

@ KyouMagichi Sean Schemmel? Can't say I agree with you there. Besides, he had already done Goku in the first series at this point?

Enjoyed this more than any of the DB films, actually. Okay, so the movie exclusive characters are lackluster but the fights were prett well done. Really enjoyed the 3 on 1 fight with Goku and Piccolo decimating that henchman.

Chi-Chi still got some fighter in her after DB? Or was she just being protective and taking initiative?

Immortality is actually within shenron's power? Didn't expect that... also I'd figure that Kami would have some connection to cancel such wishes but I guess that'd be boring for plot. Meh.

Love how a random fluid (far as he knew) fell on Krillin and he didn't flinch or jump out the way. Guess he wanted a shine, heh. Gotta keep that bald head shiny.

Don't really understand what happened in the ending... so did Gohan overpower Garlic Jr's aura with his own or did he make a giant ki ball? Seemed like he was initially overpowering him with his own aura countering Garlic Jr's but then he was hit by a ki ball.

Maybe a mixture of both? Or was he just creating the ki ball the whole time?

I don't like how similar Garlic Jr. is to Pilaf, but I do like the designs of Garlic Jr.'s castle and minions. The designs, the story, and especially some of the stuff when Gohan was hallucinating reminded me of the film Labyrinth. Even Gohan peeing on Krillin reminded me of Hoggle. I also really liked some of the rough animation in some of the scenes with the hordes of monsters that Garlic Jr. mentions. This film has a very magical, more Dragon Ball feel to it than a lot of the Dragon Ball Z stuff. I wish the rest of it was a little better.

It was a nice movie, with some good fights. Althoutght it's a Dragon Ball Z movie, I thought it was more similar to the original Dragon Ball. Garlick Jr. was a nice villain. My only complain is that the final battle was underwhelming, Gohan defeating Garlick was really lame.g

I've not watched anything related to Dragon Ball Z in years.. but holy crap that was phenomenal!

I'm sure the other films are better, and I am probably reacting out on nostalgia since DBZ is what got me into anime.. but the fun and lovable characters, the voice acting, the atmosphere, the music, and the animation is just top notch. I also grew up on the dubs, so never really got to experience the Japanese voice acting like I can now.. maybe a Dragonball/Z/GT marathon is in order. No wonder this anime has stood the test of time.

It was okay. I really liked entire setting of Garlic's castle with all the yellows and oranges. Also, stylistically felt like a strange interquel between DB and DBZ- Goku still is pretty thin and not super swole like in Z, Gohan is still in his little emperor gear, and the villains are decidedly mystical instead of sci-fi.

Nice little movie but yeah, wasn't much to it outside of some nice visuals and cool fights 7/10.

Ended the Freezer arc and am now before the Garlic Jr. Arc so it was the right time to watch the first DBZ Movie before.

Overall I was slightly disappointed and think this movie does not live up to the usual standard of the series. To be fair it only goes for about 40 minutes so hard to built any real tension or characters in this short time but I think the villains here are rather weak in presentation, design and development. The main antagonist Garlic Jr. reminds in many ways of Pilaf. His transformation though looked rather ugly (your typical huge monster douche type).

Even the fights that are praised by some critics I didn't give that much about, they were ok but nothing outstanding or spectacular. The comedy part with Gohan was solid (Drunk/Pissing), but the jokes were for a kinda obvious laugh.

The best part for me was actually that "God" (Kami) had some fighting scenes as well, otherwise only standard procedure by the other main characters.

The ending fight is rather untypical which is good in a way but slightly confusing as well. Like an aura fight between Garlic Jr. and Gohan, who in the end wins the fight and puts Garlic Jr. into the "Dead Zone". What a cheap way to end an immortal enemy...

I think this movie is in a range around 5/10. Certainly not the highest quality I've seen. I wouldn't necessarily recommend to see it.

i liked this a little more than i probably would've since i found how incompetent jr's henchmen were hilarious. other than that it was pretty generic. fights were pretty one sided, goku was just beating the crap out of all of jr's henchmen and then piccolo and him just annihilated jr. then jr. starts winning until he beats himself. there's no real conflict and it makes the movie really boring.

i feel like the nyoibou (nyoibo? nyoybuu? nyoyoynhb? the stick thing) should've still been connected between kami's place and karin tower since i haven't seen goku use it in the parts in line with the manga. i might be completely wrong but it's still something i noticed. also considering this happens before the show, i feel like showing that gohan is powerful as all hell makes seeing it for the first time in the show a bit less impactful since it's a lot more expected.

5/10, would've been lower if i didn't find the first half pretty funny

UPDATE: 4/10 because the more i think about it the weaker it becomes. there's really nothing compelling about it other than maybe the last moments.

This was a nice movie to watch. It had this overall martial art action scenes reminiscent of the original Dragon Ball. Regardless, the film takes place before the Dragon Ball Z series began. That said, I find it odd that the gang, at the start of the series, were in shook that Goku now has a son, despite being informed of it early in the movie. Another thing that took me by strangeness was Krillin's sudden presence in the castle. As if he got inserted there by random to act as a convenient plot device.

Nonetheless, the movie was mostly action-oriented. I found it pretty entertaining. I give it about a 6/10.

That was an interesting first movie. It didn't really have a lot going for itself though - other than the action. Surprised to see that Goku has a son, especially, so early on into the story.

Not bad! Just classic action before their powers got ridiculous. Initially I thought this was Saibamen's revenge since one of those goons looked like a Saibaman. 7/10

Garlic Jr. Sweep

great movie, defo agree that it has those OG DB vibes, I don't really remember how this matches up with the Garlic Jr saga in the Z anime. Garlic Jr and his minions designs are all great, and even tho partially maybe thanks to the memes, he's possibly an iconic DB villain at this point. Also the general vibe and aesthetic of the movie was great too.

Agree that the English voice is almost identical to pilaf, and that there are a lot of similarities with the characters, but it almost feels intentional. He's maybe like to Pilaf what Turles is to Goku, an interpretation or what if (what if pilaf wasn't was incompetent and lovable, and actually a serious villain)

One thing I can understand is that I was told by a friend of mine that this must have been taken place before Saiyan saga/beginning of Z, and among the first Z film I finished watching.

However, I felt like this films storyline especially Garlic Jr is much of a filler and at least feature a few protagonist and characters (Goku, Piccolo, Krillin, and Kami) from the previous series Dragon Ball. What I like about the movie is that at least it gives a plot before events of the series take place.

But all what has been said above, it's filler movie alright. I would say it's up to people's choices to giving it a watch, but I'm not saying the film is good or bad.

I know that this is not canon to DBZ and only to a filler arc, but I watched it in hopes it would be a great conclusion to my journey of the OG Dragon Ball. Maaan this sucked though. It was cool seeing Goku and Piccolo team up with a mashup of their OST but other than that I felt like there was no value gained. Did not expect Gohan to get drunk and piss on Krillin's bald ass head
