Not really at all xD She just looks more like one. All that she's done has been pretty childish. Think if she had a proper fifth grader body and tried to dress up like that? She'd look ridiculous xD She's just able to pull it off because her body is so much more mature. I wonder how she'd look next to a foreigner though? Being from Tokyo makes it more likely she's been exposed to the same sort of things that have been slowly raising the average height/size of Japanese. While the other girls living in the country-side, likely haven't been exposed to much at all of that.

I wonder if they're going to keep it from Hotarun's perspective from now on? Or if they're going to switch perspectives each episode until they've gone through the main cast?

Judging from the preview for the next episode, we're gonna see different perspectives: Apparently, Koma-chan and Natt-sun are running away from home in the next episode xD.

I don't like the way they call the older sister "Koma-chan". Basically, it is the
same as calling her "shorty". "Koma" is copying the sound of the English word
"compact". Teasing Komari about her height seems like a cheap shot.

In fact, the Japanese translation of the English word "compact" is "konpakuto"
(コンパクト).

The part where Komari was standing by the phone booth and failed to recognize
Toharun was messed up somehow. Yes, it would be so funny if Komari-chan
somehow happened to see Toharun at some random place and didn't recognize
her. However, in this case, Komari had so many strong clues that it was
Toharun. I believe it was a mistake not to somehow fix up the dialog in the
script to make that part plausible. I can imagine changing just a few lines to
correct the problem. The same flaw is in the manga. See Chapter 8.

Kids probably shouldn't be ordering the green tea flavored shaved ice since
green tea in Japan contains radioactive things like Cesium and Strontium. It's
okay when you are talking about an older adult mixing a few tea leaves with
hot water. For kids, nobody really knows the health implications of eating
that much radioactive shaved ice. I'd go with lemon flavor. Or strawberry.

Toharu definitely has a very strong ... thing ... for Komari. It seems like a full
blown girl-on-girl crush. There is a bit of a grey area of precisely where a
girl-girl relationship can be called "yuri". Based on what we have seen so far,
and based on other examples of anime series with yuri elements, I think that
their relationship can be called "yuri". Furthermore, this is confirmed a bit
more explicitly in the manga. See Chapters 3 and 8. In "Cute Girls Doing Cute
Things" (CGDCT) anime series, it is very, very common to include such story
elements, even if the series as a whole is not a yuri love story. See here for a
comprehensive list of anime series that include yuri elements:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuri_%28genre%29

Let's see what other romantic relationships blossom. I can see a lot of possible
pairings given all of the farm animals.

It's something so widespread, though, that it would be unrealistic for them not to. Especially when it sort of fits her name as well.

I thought it was an allusion to the perfectly Japanese word 駒, which means "piece" (as in "chess piece" or "shogi piece"). It also seems to have an older meaning of "small horse" (foal or pony; probably etymologically related to 小馬). All of those still count as teases on the subject of her size, so your overall point still stands I guess.

I can't do stuff with the moon runes, but didn't they say in the episode that Komari's nickname comes from "Komai?" A bit of searching in a romaji dictionary gives one possible definition as "small; fine; minute." There's no need to go looking for other origins of the nickname when the one they've given us explains it all right there.

komakai, yes, but I've not heard komai before. Then again Hotaru does say "komai" quite clearly at 5:20. Does anyone have a copy of the manga to hand to confirm?

Reverse actually. Japanese are taller because of the increase consumption of milk and red meat, which of course would have started on the farms (closer to production) and spread to the cities.

I wouldn't put too much thought into the show, this is a bucolic romance, so of course country people are not up to date on the latest trends and so forth (this despite the universality of national TV in Japan for nearly 40 years).

I don't know. But I can point you to the original source of the information,
which is the manga. Look at Page 30. In other words, Page 4 of Chapter 3
in one online scan translation. It's the second page of Chapter 3. Here is
what the narrator is saying as the characters are being introduced. The upper
case is from the lettering in the translated manga, not because I am shouting.

THE NICKNAME KOMA-CHAN WAS OF COURSE DERIVED FROM HER NAME ...
COM-PACT!
... NOT! IT'S BECAUSE HER SIZE IS TINY.

So the idea that "Koma-chan" comes from "compact" is direct from the author.
Since we have no other way to confirm what was in the author's mind, all of
your ideas sound plausible. But I'll mention again that the actual translation
of the English word "compact" into Japanese is "konpakuto".

- - - - - -

For people who aren't used to working with the Japanese "kanji" characters,
which are the ones which look very complicated, you can make use of the
free online translation tool here:

http://translate.google.com/#ja/en

With the mouse, click in the box on the left.
Type the following:
k o m a [spacebar]
Then a menu will pop up giving you a selection of possible kanji characters,
kanji phrases and some other things. You simply press some number key,
such as "3", and a Japanese character will appear in the box. In this case,
it would be 駒 which is the character that vonPeterhofmentioned.
After that, look on the right half of the screen. It gives you the English
translation of the Japanese. In this case, it is "piece".

This translation tool is quite good, as long as you don't ask too much of it.
It is quite intelligent, and automatically recognizes a wide variety of common
English phrases. Don't expect it to translate a paragraph. It is able to handle
one phrase of a sentence fairly well. It is even better if you can learn how to
break it into even smaller pieces. Practice makes perfect.

You can click to hear the pronunciation. Also, the "romaji" spelling appears
at the bottom of the screen. Lots of other features as well.

The "COM-PACT!" was created by the scanlator though.

Raw of the manga:
もちろんその由来は名前から......
ではなく細いからである
(written in the background: こじんまり)

細い would usually be pronounced ほそい but the furigana reads こまい

Seems like it is (sort of) a contraption of 細かい after all. The background text just says "small", and isn't really connected to the nickname.

Nothing to do with horses, chess pieces or コンパクト.

Thank you. Now everything is clear.
The fact that the author provided the furigana こまい seems to be the key point.

A challenging feature of the Japanese written language is that a given kanji can
be read in at least two ways. In the case of 細, it can be pronounced as
sai, hoso or koma. Depending on the context, it can mean a dozen different
things. I used this: http://www.saiga-jp.com/kanji_dictionary.html

Sure looks like the same symbols to me on the definition that means small. Komai it is.

Not that it was in question, since the Crunchyroll subs even went to the length of adding a translators note that says "Komai means small" when Hotaru was explaining where the nickname came from.

The "yuri" aspect is clarified even more in the manga. See Chapters 3 and 8.
This is the best "yuri" couple that I have seen in an anime series for a long,
long time. More often, "yuri" pairs are totally slapstick, symbolic rather than
real, or else done poorly from a dramatic point of view. That is why Sasameki
Koto and Aoi Hana crashed and burned in late 2009. We have to go back to
Maria-sama Ga Miteru in 2004 to see something as good. By the way, the
closing scene where Hotaru is making the cute stuffed doll of Komari is not in
the manga. Another difference in the manga is that the crushed ice lemon and
strawberry flavor only cost 100 Yen. But they cost 200 Yen in the anime. In
both cases, the tea+bean flavor costs 700 Yen per bowl, which is outrageous.

If the "yuri" interpretation really is correct, which it might not be, then some
fans here might want to take careful note that there are legal issues with the
promotion of homosexuality to minors in certain parts of the world. Each fan
is responsible to comply with the laws of his/her own country.

I don't know much about the "yuri" genre of anime, books and movies. But
here is a very good starting point:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuri_%28genre%29

Roughly speaking, the societal attitudes in Japan are different than in the West.
There is not a stigma attached. So "A" can fall in love with "B", and the gender
does not matter. There seems to be resistance towards "yuri" anime in the
West, which could explain why no primarily yuri-themed anime series has ever
been dubbed into English. However, in Japan, it needs to be added that the
traditional rigid societal expectation is that young people will grow up and get
married to appropriate partners, quite often selected by their parents. So you
can be in love with anybody that you want. On the other hand, you are
obligated to get married to some person irrespective of love. I am simplifying
and over-generalizing, so please follow-up on your own for better explanations.

Yeah, that does look like one of those slangy contractions (気持ち悪い->きもい、暖める->あっためる, etc). Now a part of me does suspect that there might be a primordial etymological link between 駒「こま」 and こまかな (細かな->細かい), but no Japanese etymological dictionary I've been able to plough thorough so far has confirmed that, so my etymological intuition shall have to concede defeat for now.

Natsumi did call him "nii-chan" in episode 1, but it's fairly easy to miss.

What I think is new information from this episode is that the teacher is the older sister that Renge had previously mentioned. That's a serious age gap.

And it puts you into a bit of perspective about the size of the village - all five of the main cast before Hotaru came along was from one of just two families. And the only person we've seen other than those who isn't elderly is the sweet shop owner.
