This was quite an enjoyable ova/movie, really enjoyed the old drawing and animation style and the best surprise was that one of the characters was voiced by Wakamoto Norio!

In general a quite lovely anime ova and I wonder what the remake has to offer! 6/10

Well... you can tell it's an 80's anime. So much 80's music, lol.

This anime contains a very important lesson: RTFM!
Seriously, they were looking through paper manuals to figure out how the city super computer worked!

I still say this is the best of the older 80's and 90's OVAs. Miles better than Violence Jack and Genocyber. The story made a lot more sense and wrapped up neater than the likes of Black Magic M-66, which was pathetic. It was also directed by Masamune Shirow himself, but Appleseed is superior.

Not bad, basically an hour long ghost in the shell episode made in the 80s. The ending felt a bit rushed, it wasn't very satisfying the way the big bad guy went down.

Fun little, retro 80s anime that I like! Great music, animation, and characters. 7/10.

It's a happy ending because the society designed by machines, largely for machines, continues as the status quo? Or because Hitomi, the replaceable DNA key, survived? If Sebastian wasn't portrayed as an uber-evil terrorist, this would have seemed like an unfortunate conclusion. Still makes me feel uneasy about its resolution.

Calon did nothing wrong.

It's so jarring to see Brialeos doing humans things like, eat, and wear clothes.

Novels I have read/am reading pending approval: since November 10 2022

The mech designs have this cute roundness that was really fun to see in action. So it sucks that Deunan and Sebastian each have mechs and power armor respectively, yet there isn't a one-on-one showdown. They opt for running around hallways to shutdown a gigantic tank. As someone else stated above, it made for an unsatisfying end.

Felt derivative of stuff like Megazone 23 and Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01. That's not to say it's bad but that it's just not really that unique of a film in any sense.

Not much going on in this movie. The plot itself is driven by antagonists with weak motives like human supremacy and "world domination", yet they're framed as if these are real complex moral quandaries. Maybe if Olympus had legitimate demonstrations of a seedy underbelly or discrimination against those who aren't bioroids then it would be more justifiable, but there really wasn't any.

@eski514

I don't know, given the alternative of living in an apocalyptic wasteland... The human population must be small if there is no unemployment and they have to produce sentient androids at great expense to keep society running. Too small to support a 1980s retro-futuristic society!

Athena isn't ruthless because she's a bitch, it's because she knows how horrific a societal collapse really is. Those social workers weren't kidding when they said it took years of rehabilitation to heal the trauma of the survivors they rescue. Watch Threads if you hate sleep and want to know what life is like outside Olympus.

It's all good but go and ask a starving homeless Syrian how much he cares about freedom and self-government after 13 years of civil war. The cost of letting Olympus collapse again would be too great.

I did like how it wasn't all black and white like most of these "sanctuary city" films and anime are. Even at the end the MC policewoman was torn. There's no right or wrong, just a darker or lighter shade of grey.

Too many just promote throwing the baby out with the bathwater and don't even look at the other side of the argument. There's a lot to be said for enforcing a peaceful, stable, prosperous society even if we do have to sacrifice freedom. On the other hand, who wants to be ruled by a robot dictatorship? What's life when there's nothing to strive for?

I'd like to think that Athena learned from this experience and less trust in computers though. The last scene seems to suggest it anyway.
