This show would work better as a filmed documentary. The lackluster animation does not do justice to the locations depicted.

What bothers me most though is the MC. She acts like a brat dragged along for vacation. I suppose the show makes more sense from her standpoint: little to appreciate and only whining to fill the time. How do you make a travel documentary work, anyway, when the author herself does not want to be there?

She comes to enjoy it more. This show seems really geared for people eager to learn about the rail system, network, and stations of Japan and would be a tough sell to anyone else. Shame only 4 episodes were subbed.

Having seen the second ep, the show does seem to be more about the rail system than travel in itself. A tough sell indeed.

Idk how I feel about this? Only a few minutes of it was interesting, the rest was like a snoozefest. I'd rather watch a live action documentary. ^^; I do like trains but this show made it kind of boring.

EDIT - Too lazy to make a new thread, so I'll post ep 2 and 3 comments here. It doesn't get any better than before. I don't hate this show but I don't see a point in finishing it and it's just too bland to complete when other shows deserve more attention.

I think you have to take into account that this show is really made for the hardcore train lovers, of which there are lots in Japan. Train hobbyism is this country goes way further than it does in other countries. The main character is probably highly relatable for train lovers in Japan, as are the 'quests' they pursue. Train hobbyism is a very 'mental' thing in that it takes a lot of feeling to appreciate it. You have to 'feel' the exitement of visiting all stations of a certain line. Basically, if you're not into the subculture it will be very hard to appreciate.

I enjoy trains quite a bit and because I am aware of the fanatic train hobbyists in Japan, this anime is an interesting study of a subculture. The female main character is a necessary counterweight to the two others who enjoy trains in a way the mainstream audience may not understand. Also, to have a skeptical main character in the show is a perfect opportunity for the hobbyists to explain themselves. Kind of like how in X-Files, you need a character like Scully, because most people are not alien conspiratards, but also because alien conspiratards like to prove others wrong.

Anyhow, I think this was a bit of a boring opening episode as well, but there are so many interesting stories to be told about rail lines in Japan that I'm sure there will be some more interesting stuff later on.
