Your arguments are very good, only this part is flawed. Even if you don't take a look at the manga, you can see it's not going for anything like this, they're trying to do a serious job, which they clearly cannot.

There's much to criticize, they completely obliterated the original plot, specially with making Kizaki Emi play a fanservice role. The way they introduced Linebarrel screwed with a lot of things that should be happening later on; The art is horrible; The opening is by Ali Project, which many people hate because their songs are somewhat similar to each other and use very archaic and complicated japanese, but I don't have anything against them personally; The voice cast is just plain wrong(great actors chosen for the wrong roles), this one's more of a opinion, but just looking at the credits I can spot a few misfits:

Mamiko Noto as Emi: before the anime aired I was happy she was going to voice someone in this series, but Emi wasn't the best choice, I was originally expecting her to voice Ishigami's secretary. Still hoping to hear more lines from her though, to see how it comes through.

Sawashiro Miyuki as Satoru: this one we already heard and it came out horrible, she does the same voice she did for Kurenai.

Kugimiya Rie as Izuna: He's probably coming with the voice of Rokujou Miharu, and that's bad. She'd probably do a better job as Shizuna.

EDIT: Close up of the worst part of the animation:

Since I haven't read the manga I cant really comment on that, however just watching the first two eps we encounter numerous things that happen in other shows, the only difference is it's happening in a more comical and stereotypically way in this series. It's as if their purposely trying to make fun of other series....at least thats how I see it.

I don't think I've hated a protagonist this much since Itou Makoto. The quality of a show goes down quite dramatically when you have the main character saying he's a hero of justice when he's really a naive pretender. Plus, none of the supporting characters have the guts to say that he's not.

What you end up with is a supporting cast of weak characters and a hated protagonist?
Either School Days(psychological) or a terrible anime series.

Look I seen a lot of Gundams and almost none of this style so yeah I think the style is nicer than some Gundam series but not all of course!

Please tell me and vent off to me of why he is annoying. I FIND HIM ANNOYING CAUSE HIS F*****NG VOICE REMINDS OF MAKOTO! That's it though so far.

I can't say anything, because I have judged characters based on the first eps of series, and promptly dropped it when said character annoyed me. I however don't condone the bashing of said series just because something about it annoyed me. If I want to rant and rave about how I see something as stupid, I'll do it to my friends or in private. I don't need to do it publicly, and alienate people who might like it.

I'll stay with it. I like the mecha designs but not the CGness of them, or the hyperactive hollywood editing style used for the action scenes; I like that the protagonist has his own agenda and isn't inexplicably reluctant to pilot a giant mech, but I don't like his childishness or consummate poseur nature; and I'm still waiting for some kind of proper surprise. "You're dead" wasn't really that game-breaking a homerun.

Now I hear the OP properly, much as I adore Ali Project generally, I feel this is going to have to do a lot of growing on me to become as liked as most of their other work. It's gotten so complex and layered that it's just too loud and jumbled, frankly. Maybe the single will be better.

Deal is, that's human nature. First impressions usually mean everything to a person, so when the show doesn't start off good, a lot of people are going to jump to conclusions about it. This may end up being the best show of 2008 for all we know, but a lot of people are not going to watch it all because of these first few eps.

Bashing based on screenshots or trailers is jumping to conclusions. Anyone watching an episode of something that the creators have the lack of wisdom to start badly is not jumping to conclusions. Bad anime is bad. By definition, this cannot possibly be the best show of 2008; it may become amazing later, but Thing That Goes From Meh At Best To Amazing < Thing That Starts Amazing And Maintains Standards Throughout, every time. Any anime firm that wants people to watch its series has to make a real effort to impress on as many levels as possible with the first episode, and keep up their standards as they go on.

Unfair to who precisely? The multimillion dollar media conglomerate behind this series, who can't even write decent, coherent subs for their own damn series? Poor thing, coochie coo. Is it fair to fans of anime generally to waste a budget on something many people aren't going to watch? How about fairness to the creators and fans of the source material that they (apparently, never read it myself) are wildly and pointlessly deviating from?

I'm not saying mindlessly bashing something is OK, but neither is it reasonable to expect people to invest hours of their lives on watching entertainment that does not entertain them.

This anime blows. Gonzo failed again. 3d mechas(why use 3d? is it much cheaper) are so ugly, even first gundam looks better(1979), and characters animation is bad too.
Main character is a moron. This is gonna be the lowest rated anime in my list.

i enjoyed the op by Ali Project.

while the main guy is a tool, i think its going to serve a purpose later on. even emi is looking at him weird now. whenever i hear him talk or yell im just reminded of kazuki from dragonaut and how much i had that guy with him wearing a thong on his head.

the artwork is like it was stolen from s-cry-ed. main character to main character as well as for several other characters. not sure what to make of it yet, but i hope it doesn't end up being a flop like dragonaut.

Animation is awful, there are still stripes all over their faces, main character is an idiotic jerk who for some unknown reason believes he's the justice and insists on protecting the city that doesn't really need his protection considering everything he ruined, main heroine has boobs, but no personality, there are some people attacking some other people but no one's in a hurry to fill us in with the details, so I really have nothing to look forward to in this anime.

Put on hold indefinitely.

i still don't get why people keep comparing shows to their original manga counterparts. seriously, this thread is only used to discuss the anime episode, not the manga -_-

in any case, as much as i don't like the animation and the main character, i do think that this is still quite "good" as a show.

first, the op and ed for me are quite good(not THAT good, but likable). only problem i have for those songs is that ali project and maaya sakamoto don't change their song styles. you can identify them right off the bat without even looking at the credits or in wiki :P(ali project usually des fast rap sounding songs, while maaya's song sounds like the first MF ed)

second, the fact that most of you people(inclding me of course) are pissed with kouichi just means that his VA is totally into the role, and the script/acting or whatever makes him annoying is well done. why? because i do think he was meant to be an ass. that said, him acting like an ass, and us thinking he IS an ass, means he was portrayed well. that makes the quality of the show good. it gets the message across(the message being, "kouichi is an a-hole").

sure, it is hard to watch a show when the protagonist is an ass, but hey, im pretty sure most of you watched code geass and death note(and yes, lelouch and light acted as asses, and they also were thinking of the same thing kouichi is preaching: justice) so, do you still think linebarrels is crappy just because of kouichi?

while i do believe it isn't the best show(there are way better shows in terms of characters, story and animation) i do think people should think twice about dropping it just because of the main character, or because the show isn't following the manga or whatnot. just my two cents :)

Well another ep..

The plot is nice but well I just dont like the attitude of the main character.

Reply to the person above: We were able to watch it because even though they had their "annoying" attitude they could still be acceptable and likable, which this character is always bitching and never shuts up. Its kind of hard to say why one character is better than another than just saying those two had a more emotional impact to us than this character which makes them likable and this character not likable.

What about Jin running around naked in the first ep of Kannagi? Did you complain about that? Please understand that showing a naked guy is not gay.

Yes I am complaining about that scene too but the context made me less into complaining but I still felt uncomfortable.

good point. but take note that even though the three examples are all high school students, light and lelouch both had high intelligence and were revered by most of their fellow students, while this one was bullied and stepped upon since childhood. it is quite a "reasonable" effect that he turned into a boastful jackass because now, he can kick the asses of those who bullied him before.

in any case, we all hate him for it, but let's not burn the show for that :P

Koichi is now the biggest douche of the season for the time being I guess. He gets a little better later in the manga but considering how different the anime is already, who knows where this will take.

As for the episode, i thought it was ok. fairly standard in direction considering everyones role.

Thanks for this post. This thread needed a little bit of maturity. :)

I have to say that I didn't liked the first 5 episodes of Code Geass... But I loved the series as a whole. I can't take seriously someone who bashes a series as a know-it-all with only TWO episodes seen.

BTW, the first eps. of the manga aren't so wonderful.

I am hanging on to this series by a thread. I usually will go 5 or so episodes in before I make a drop, suspend, carry on watching decision. The protagonist is a bit annoying, but perhaps it's not a stretch for his given age and maturity. I suppose I am holding up hope that the other characters and story can carry my interest, but I am starting to have some doubts.
