----------------------------------------
God damnit, Asano.
As Hox put it:
"Now that the volume's done, I guess it's back to 6-8 months of waiting while we all complain about how slow Punpun releases are! This time, it's going to be particularly tough after the way this volume ended."

Eh, volume 9 had a nice slow pace going for it for almost every chapter, each one developing a certain character or relationship. Then chapter 98 and 99 come for Punpun/main plot development, shit hits the fan again and now we have to wait again. I particularly loved one of the earlier 90s chaps with Pegasus's TV appearance, that was so brilliantly well done and I didn't think it'd take place so soon.

Man, did I misunderstand something or are Pegasus and Aiko related? (Cosmos Health Center; one of the old ladies is even the one that Aiko had to accompany to sell that 'virtuous' water) That came as quite the surprise. I'm also waiting to see what Seki's 'job' of pressing a button is all about, in addition how Shimizu's relationship will develop with Pegasus. The re-appearance of the black afro guy from the first volume was also surprising.
In addition, I wonder in what ways Asano had been affected by the Earthquake this year, if he lost people he loved or whatnot, as I wasn't expecting him to bring up a fictional one.
I guess it was foreseeable though: he does include everyday things and gives his view on them either by the artwork (the manager's look for example), the attitude (the principal and vice-principal playing hide & seek vol. 1, or the teacher's unusual habit of blurting out "JUST KIDDING~!", amongst countless other takes on a lot of personalities, professions, philosophies and ideologies) or simply words (Nanjou's convos with the manga editor, chubby friend, etc. At least she can defend properly her nihilism; it's horrible when done incorrectly). His point of views are still well thought and developed in this volume.

(small note: Punpun finally looks quasi-human; and I just noticed his Vans-lookalike shoes. Are those still trendy in Japan today? I rarely see them in this part of Europe anymore; it's one of the few trend developments I accidentally noticed)

Now for the main stuff: Punpun has hit another low, and I don't really know what to say about it as it's quite self-explanatory (his new obsession with Takashi). Punpun had stopped all self-pleasure since his relation with his uncle's gf if I remember correctly? Guess this development was shown like this in the sense that Takashi is the reason he managed to thus take a step forward out of his depression (although not in a usual, or so we would tend to believe, way).
Too scared to suicide like he promised himself 2 years ago (which is also the correct choice in the end), so instead he decided to live someone else's life based on how he figured it'd be like. "This is way too fucking easy!" (man his psyche is fucked to the max, good ol' Punpun right here), so true it's scary.
Right there and then, volume reaching end (I knew Aiko should be appearing in the chapter but I still wasn't expecting it, god damnit) but I thought this new side of him would get some development for now (his sitting positions -> is he openly acting feminine/extravagant at times or is it just because he lacks knowledge on social behaviors/attitudes? I personally doubt the latter: he is smart and observant so he most likely psychanalyzes others and knows what means what -> my impression), but out of nowhere Aiko meets Punpun (she's a model now or?) and bam the volume is done.

"The world is mine." (Seeing Mimura's gf's hairstyle and this line made me think: Asano has a thing for Hatsune Miku or is going to be cynical about it. Personally first thing to came to mind with this line was his "What a Wonderful World" manga though)

Is Punpun going to truly stay dead, with Takashi starting a relation with Aiko? How will she react then? Or will he literally have his world crushing down on him in the harshest depression he's had up to now (wonder if that's possible, I don't know how he can still cry so much; but previous attempts at 'fixing' himself made him only fall lower in the end, but is Asano going to do this everytime?), or the opposite as his childhood self once thought he might be fated to be with her and a good end will thus follow up from their reunion in this volume (like the editor said, mainstream couldn't enjoy Punpun as it's just too depressing and painful when relating to it to be entertaining in popular ways. He's aware of it, obviously, but I doubt it'll end well just yet)? Or will she be the one with a possibly harsh/cruel attitude ("Okay Punpun, I trust you. But if you break this promise, I really will kill you" -> her childhood was far from perfectly nice, could have developped obsessive complexes towards Punpun or use him to let our any frustrations she might have. At the same time, as she said it as a child it's something that could also easily be ignored now)?
No idea, that just makes the cliffhanger worse. God damnit Asano. I hate your cliffhangers, and I think this one is the harshest as we've been waiting for their adult-selves reunion. Too many questions, and no definite answer to most until the next volume.

Oyasumi Punpun has really gone far in its life and depth now. If I had only given it a 9 before, this would have made me give it a 10. It was already a 10/10 though with the 8 previous volumes so now I can't give it even more props, meh.
Long post/review, sorry 'bout that. Especially with parentheses abuse. Hope some will be open for discussion as I simply pointed out some observations I've remembered with one reading and mainly asked questions as I doubt I could foresee what'll happen. I tried not to include anything like how I personally related to some parts since it'd be way too long now. That is one of the main reasons this manga is so effective.

tl;dr: masterpiece.

Haha, I’m glad you said something about those parentheses so I didn’t have to. And I want to thank you for breathing some life into the discussion threads for this manga.

This volume was definitely slow-moving and, overall, very contemplative. It was great. You have Sachi pushing her own personal philosophy onto an unwilling audience; Seki being his usual, pretentious self with his longwinded musings; and the uncomfortably personal narration of Punpun’s new life in complete isolation. And, of couse, you have Pegasus. Inio Asano continuously throws walls of text at us but somehow keeps it interesting to read.

Personally, I think chapter 99 was my favorite out of this volume (though I loved all of them, really). I’ve always loved the way that this manga is narrated—like a twisted picture book, with Punpun as the main character. And Inio Asano’s writing really shines in this chapter (the translation was fantastic as well). Just… my heart goes out to Punpun. I really, really love his character. He’s so pathetic and lonely and desolate but in a way that makes it impossible for me to hate him.

Also in this volume, we see a lot of Seki and Shimizu. I love their relationship. It is so beautiful. And it just broke my heart to see the two of them struggle with each other as friends or co-dependents or however you might describe their connection. Dammit, I want this to be resolved, Inio Asano!

I didn’t really see that Pegasus and Aiko were related. Not blood-related, at least. I just assumed Aiko’s mother had become part of the cult that Pegasus’ dad started, and in that way the two are “related.” But yeah, I don’t remember anything explicit being said about them being related, but maybe I missed the hint?

Sachi is basically a self-insert character, so it’s likely that many of her views at least partially reflect Inio Asano’s positions on various issues—manga, the recent earthquake, and so on. To comment on something you mentioned, I don’t really think nihilism properly describes Sachi’s outlook on life, especially since she argues that manga should be more than a source of mindless entertainment. Manga should have meaning. Key word: meaning. From what little I understand about philosophy, she’s more of an existentialist in the way she regards the individual and also in the way she critiques the fundraisers in the aftermath of the earthquake. Sachi stubbornly holds individuality above all else, and to deny yourself is unforgivable. However, for all the noise she makes about being true to yourself and about standing up for yourself, the reader sees her waver in this volume. Like Punpun, the reader saw Sachi as beacon of strength. Someone who stuck to her ideals even in the face of harsh resistance. At least, that’s what we initially assume, but, in this volume, Inio Asano humanizes her by showing her weakness. Her hypocrisy. Her impotence.

How do I describe the emotion I felt when I saw her referencing that moe manga? It was, like, “You too, Sachi?”

Inio Asano is so amazing at crafting female characters. As a female character, Sachi is a cut above the rest. She has no “dere” side. She isn’t moe in the least. She is such a real and tangible existence to me. Her bitchiness, her assertiveness, her frustration…All these “undesirable” traits flesh her out and make her more substantial than any Key heroine. Inio Asano’s ability to understand people and to convey this understanding is unbelievable, especially considering he’s only in his early thirties (AND A GUY). I love Punpun. I love Sachi. I love a lot of his characters because he does such a great job illustrating everyone’s motivations and convictions. Because you understand the characters so well, you cultivate a certain level of affection for them, no matter how flawed they are. Pure skill.

At any rate, I have to object to something you said (too lazy to figure out how to quote):

“Too scared to suicide like he promised himself 2 years ago (which is also the correct choice in the end)”

Reading this manga, you should realize that it’s generally inappropriate and very tricky to make moral or value judgments. Is Punpun really better off alive and impersonating someone else for the sole reason of sexing random girls? Was it really the “correct” choice? And it’s not like Punpun really made the conscious decision to stay alive; he was just too scared to kill himself. Like Sachi said, “Happiness is relative.” And in the same vein, it’s difficult to really evaluate what is right and wrong and what is good and bad in this manga.

Also, my impression of Punpun is that he is awful—utterly inept—at dealing with and understanding people. He assumes the worst about others, and he looks down on them, but he simultaneously lacks self-confidence. I doubt he has the capability to psychoanalyze people, and his interaction with Sachi in this volume is evidence of that fact. If Punpun truly understood Sachi, he wouldn’t have uttered those thoughtless words to her.

And I sincerely doubt the ending will be as simple as Punpun “getting the girl.” Inio Asano is definitely aware of the manga industry and the popular audience, as shown by Sachi’s little speech to her editor. If Inio Asano went back on his words and defaulted to a simple, happy ending, it would be a true betrayal to his fans. So what I’m saying is that kind of ending is impossible for this manga. It just isn’t even an option. I won’t accept it. Maybe Punpun and Aiko will “get together” in the end or whatever, but you can count on the journey there being as convoluted and treacherous as fuck.

Really, I think Aiko would find “Takeshi” rather dull.

Geez, after what you guys have said I'm almost scared to make a comment, lol. Let's start with that after reading through the last couple of volumes within a week's time, I'm exhausted and exhilarated at the same time. Oyasumi Punpun is quite possibly the best manga I've ever read, and although I have not read that much manga (yet) I feel it will remain so, if only because I can relate to it far more than I'd ever admit in public.

Anyway, I don't think Aiko is related to Pegasus either, but clearly the cult she was in as a child (and maybe still is involved in) is the cult of Pegasus' father. Seeing Seki and Shimizu break up did tug on a heartstring, there's something about their bond that felt so strong even though the conflict was always there.

And rasenkai, I can't agree more about what you said about Asano's ability to understand people. Sachi is a clear-cut example but looking back at the past nine volumes, Asano has focused on so many different characters with such different beliefs that it is crazy every single one of them feels not only realistic, but true. There's never a forced "Oh, he's trying too hard now" moment, and as a matter of fact, I can't even remember him getting close to a moment like that.

Anyway, there's a lot of interesting stuff waiting to happen (when is there not, right?) but I too think that Aiko will break Punpun's 'Takashi' mentality before he's even properly gotten used to it. Or more likely, he'll push her away right as he's found her and it will break him once more.
Ara ara.

Ah sorry rasenkai, I thought I had answered. I'll edit this post later today or early next week as you've made valid points (mainly the part about judging morality and values which completely slipped my mind haha).

Wanted to drop a message for now stating that volume 10 is supposedly released (http://www.manga-news.com/index.php/manga-vo/Oyasumi-Punpun-jp/vol-10 , amongst other sites) so we can look forward to some answers and Asano's great direction/plot development soon. Glad to see we can also expect another volume at least (it seems?).
This topic stays for volume 9 ofc.

After all you guys said in this thread all I can add is: another WHAT?! moment.

But as for Aiko's relationship with the cult, I think it's somewhat complicated. Back in her childhood she hated it because of how it made her look in front of her peers, but if I remember correctly, when Seki and Shimizu meet her briefly, she's headed for the funeral of the cult's leader, right? So maybe she's in it voluntarily because of noone else but... Punpun? Because of his broken promises and her broken love... is what I think.

Ohh Punpun, just how much more tormented can you get.

Punpun being "Takashi" was in all honesty quite scary,he's at his lowest point in life thus far.

And of fucking course Aiko reappears now,had the biggest grin on my face when I saw that panel that didn't show her face but you knew it was her because who else would it be other than her.

"The world is mine."

Also the first 5 pages of this chapter alone...wow can't even put into words.

Punpun is seriously losing it. It's not like he's got terrible life circumstances or anything, but that seems like a realistic portrayal of people who are mentally ill. He should've been seeking out psychiatric help years prior, even if Sachi and her friends help provide stability, he should still be able to mentally and emotionally stand on his own.

That ending, maybe we'll see the story really begin picking up now?

Punpun's starting to lose direction, though I'm not surprised that his uncle's advice wasn't heeded. That's typical of him.

As of late, Punpun's mentality is completely in line with my own, so I think I have a little responsibility to air my own thoughts on being sick of yourself, trying to become more socially responsive, and just plain attempting to erode the outlandish aspects of yourself so that you can more effectively integrate into a scarily alien society.

Throughout my incredibly short life, I've taken on many different personas that were meant to make me feel more at ease about myself. Fortunately or unfortunately, I was never able to effectively mould my personality into a more pleasant one. Even my exterior proved too difficult to actively change.

Tales of Mere Existence actually has a very interesting (and very resonant) piece on just this:

More recently, there's also Poppy's "Everybody Wants to be Poppy", which really speaks to me:

Punpun's so bored towards his own life that he went practically gay for his handsome neighbor who has it all, from an ambition to hot chicks to bang every day, to the point of outright impersonating his personality and discarding his true self right then and there.

It's too bad that the shit Punpun and Sachi had been through caused them to drift apart overtime. He had a "holy shit!" encounter with Aiko when he had least expected it and as much as I'd want to say that he's fucked, she's actually really damn hot...

The nonsensical rambling at the end that mixed all the inner dialogue throughout the chapter was overwhelming but I guess this is what it constantly feels to be in Punpun's head.
