Not gonna lie, for something labeled the most disturbing anime to exist this was very underwhelming. There was only one scene that disturbed me and it was like 1 minute long. The rest was mostly just WTF material.

Like don't get me wrong, I'm more desentisized to disturbing anime/manga than most people so I can probably handle this movie better than most people, but come on. I've seen people who are into disturbing shit praise this movie, and I'm here like ??? what are you talking about. Sure the story is sad and there's some scenes that can be pretty heavy to watch, but if I had to choose between rewatching Midori or Bondage Game I'd choose the former without hesitation. Maybe the manga is where the real meat and bones is at...

But I digress, it was an alright movie I suppose. I think the artstyle was kinda charming in it's own way. And apparently it's all animated & drawn by one dude, that's pretty impressive. Also the Dwarf can go fuck himself. I was totally on the Dwarf x Midori ship and he ruined it at the last second :(

What the fuck did I just see?
Visually it's not bad, but what a rubbish story is this? kkkkkkkkkkkkkk. This is clearly not a comedy anime, but I laugh so hard at how bad it is. Seriously, I can't express in words how bad this anime is.

Midori is different in what it wants to show, in that it is horrific. Yes, it is a sad, graphically heavy show, and it has a controversial story behind it, about its production, its purpose, and its popularization today.

Hiroshi Harada is the name of the creator of the anime, inspired by Suehiro Maruo's manga, both with the same title: "Shoujo Tsubaki". Knowing Maruo and Harada a little more, I realized that this partnership, however turbulent, made sense and delivered a unique and never-before-seen show. The same creator of Death Lullaby alongside one of the greatest artists in Japanese warped horror. What more did you want? Flowers? A show about happiness? Hope? Marriage? A satisfying ending?

NO!

This is a show that knocks down all those expectations, ensnared and deluded. As the anime itself cogitates, Midori is a character who is deceived from the very beginning of the show. A girl who wants happiness, but all she finds is the deepest and most grotesque affliction. It is a show that retells the lives of many people in an unhappy time in Japan. There are questions about at which time the anime wants to reflect, but honestly, in any era of the late 19th and first half of the 20th century, the show is easily found, as it is a result of Japan's political instability, which impoverished lives and lives amidst destruction.

It is a unique show, of course. At the same time, it's a show that you can't get a perspective on just by watching the anime, as if it were the peak of the object of study and reflection it wants to bring.

Anyway, Midori is a work that I view with fondness and am always remembering its existence, either by researching it or by hearing people comment on it. It is a catharsis that I never want to take away from me.

This film has to have the most ridiculous score on MAL. While I think I slightly prefer Harada's "Death Lullaby" (it had more experimental animation techniques), it's still an impressive independent film, and the final sequence is breathtaking. It's a reference to the climax of Terayama ShΕ«ji's "Grass Labyrinth", with all the circus members laughing at Midori (there's even a character in a black mask in both films, although it's "blink or you'll miss it"; a similar-looking ball, etc). The film was also very theatrical, especially in the beginning (those whispering women, for example, which you can also see in Terayama's films like "Pastoral"), which I liked. The eye symbols were references to Tsuge Yoshiharu's "Screw Style", I believe, which themselves are taken from eye doctor symbols in Taiwan, iirc. That red vane was probably a callback to "Pastoral" as well. And oh boy the music, J. A. Seazer never disappoints.

Also, people complaining about "bad plot" are making me scratch my head. Harada even said that according to Maruo, some events were based on actual facts (even if that were not true, the story is realistic despite being something distant and unknown for most people). Both the mangaka and the director experienced bullying, iirc.

I wish I could see it back when it first aired in Japan. It was supposed to be seen live with various theatrical elements added to the experience. Just watching a DVD (or an upcoming Blu-Ray!) at home is different (and kinda inferior).

This is also not even remotely the most visually disturbing anime or manga out there, horror genre (in general, not only in manga/anime) casually shows much more "scary" things. People are repulsed because the things depicted actually exist in the world, as opposed to zombies or monsters or whatever.

Well technically Midori is a "camelia girl" and she called Masamitsu her husband so...Also Maruo really likes to draw flower and plant ornaments in his manga.

It's not as disgusting or disturbing as people say, it's just that there are some uncomfortable scenes to see.

I don't know if there are people out there who experience life exactly like Midori's but I'm pretty sure that there are similar ones, and honestly it was a life of incomparable pain and misery and I'm speechless to the fact that Midori is still alive, conscious and sane.

Not surprising given that Suehiro Maruo (the creator of the original manga) is a big inspiration of Usamaru Furuya (the creator of Palepoli)

Worororororo! God forgive me I have sinned.

I have never seen something so atrocious in my entire existence. My heart is still sore for sweet Midori, cruelty doesn't begin to describe the treatment she experienced in that shithole. I was rooting for her to get the hell out and live a great life, but damn did that fail. I think that Wonder Masamitsu placed Midori an illusion insurance that will be triggered in case he dies, which made her crazy. The ass-face was messed up and possessive, I'm bleeding from within with disgust. Why couldn't the other circus go crazy at the end instead of her, after the hell they put her through? I guess, the story wasn't intended for a happy ending, but Instead depict the harsh reality of child orphans especially in the so called happy places such as circuses. Plus, anime in the 90s and 80s were edge lords.

This is how I felt after watching

Great movie. Wasn’t expecting to enjoy it as much as I did.
The ending really hit me in the feelings. Midori’s cry was heartbreaking. She deserved a better life.

A história é muito fraca. Basicamente é só uma sequência de cenas feitas para chocar e nada mais, seria interessante se a história tivesse sido melhor desenvolvida.

In my personal opinion It was hard to grasp the plot or the message of the movie, it was hard to follow at some times as well. All though I haven’t seen much else to compare to so my opinion is pretty limited. the g#re (idk what I need to censor or not to not get ban) and dark parts where not as bad as I was expecting from what I heard from other peoples reviews the art style took a sec to get used to but it’s alright. I hope I’ll eventually be able to understand this work eventually

It's definitely not my first rodeo with ero-guro, if you look past that, the most disturbing thing about the whole film is probably the grooming and pedophilia. If you strip the film with those elements you're really left with a rather simple premise and the gore is mostly just an added shock factor. Nevertheless, the visuals were certainly what elevated the film for me rather than its story.

It is a disgusting anime residue that contains unnecessary brutality, absurdly contains rape and pedophile scenes, does not know what it wants to tell, does not have an iota of development in its character, does not have the personality of its side character, and seriously insults humanity, which makes a pedophile beautification. This disgusting thing is definitely an insult to anime.

While I was not blown away this was a more interesting watch than I anticipated. The horrors committed to this girl are tragic and the plot is very shallow at the start with her constant torment. It slowly fleshes out into a love story about power and the role it plays in relationships. The animation switches from barely a slide show to some amazing sequences such as the last scene or some of the magicians tricks that can be a visual treat. Its amazing what was accomplished with such a small production. While this is not for everybody, this can be a challenging watch but is worth getting through the shocking content for a unique viewing experience.

I give this a 2/10 because the distrubing imagery was kind of impressive, but clearly the focus here was shock value rather than telling any sort of meaningful story. Stuff like this really feel like a slap in the face to the viewer. Like the creators themselves don't respect their own work enough to actually try to put together something of substance. Reminds me a lot of Henshin in that it accomplishes nothing with it's portrayal of abuse and torture other than to be shocking. You can use disturbing content like this in your work, but in this way it is just distasteful. I only watched this because I saw a few people calling it "high art", but I can't say I agree personally.

I mean I can admire the creator going to such lengths in making something like this all by himself and I'm sure it was a hell of a lot of work, but I just can't help but wonder... Why?
