So what exactly happened there? I understand that Kankel was killed by Betterman and that because of (insert long explanation here) humanity has retracted into nothingness (?) But I'm still a little clear on what it all means. On top of that what was with the scene with Hinoki and Keita laughing manically on the shore of some island (going back to episode 1). Where they really alive? And what bothers me more, the manic laughter reminded me a lot of Algernon symptoms, suggesting that Sakura's premonition that it has been wiped off the planet was actually wrong.

I don't know, this ending was rather puzzling imo.

It was probably similar to NGE when humanity was wiped out and only Shinji and Asuka were left to repopulate the world, sort of a second Adam and Eve.

What I didn't understand is how Yakusugi ended up being the Conkol at the end. He was a good guy and helped Lamia and the others out against the earlier bad guys, but then ended up being the final boss that Betterman had to fight. Was he evil from the beginning and only making certain Betterman and Co survived so he could fight them, or did he turn evil after dying from fighting the Brahma?

This episode made up for some barely understandable episodes , but I fail to fully comprehend it , I will just think Lamia saved everyone and after the battle with Kankel he turned into the baby which Chandi saved , Sakura was just tired she is still alive . Or Sakura didn't hear any voices because everyone died .
I just love series who make references in 1st episode to the last .

I'm pretty sure the baby was Kaede's

I don't see what suggests all of humanity was wiped out. I think for whatever reason, the death of Kankel/end of Algernon severed her connection with the Limpid channel. It showed a key shattering and her seeming like she was in some kind of pain for a second. Iirc, the key was shown in an earlier episode and was related to her connection to the limpid channel.

Series finale. Turns out the sins of the past {Dive Inspection} are what caused the problems that plagued the planet today. Turns out Asami was a vector for the Algenon disease by her participation in the Dive Inspection and along with her boss is killed off by Chandy. The old priest is revealed to be Kankle as he was the focal point of the Dive Inspection for creating the best man. Keita with Hinoki in tow puts up a valiant attempt to stop Kankle but are taken out easily and left to die at the ocean floor. Lamia is he last line of defense and defeats Kankle by transforming into Oltus and resetting some mental program Algernon was causing. Series end with casualties as Asami, Sho, and Keade are killed off near the end of the series with Sho and Keade's unborn child being the survivor of the double suicide. Sakura is left comatose with losing her ability to the limpid channel, and Keita and Hinoki turn out to be alive as it's implied Lamia having saved them after his battle with Kankle.

Extra tidbits and information, since it's 2019 there has been more content added to this series. First and foremost there was a manga that came out based on the anime about a year after the series aired that has a better ending to how the anime ended aka Keita and Hinoki being rescued from the island they were placed on, Sho and Keade sacrificing their lives to save Keita and Sakura from Brahman instead of the double suicide, ect. As of late 2016 there is a current LN that continues the Betterman universe with it's sister sow Gaogaigar that shows what has happen to the survivors of the Betterman series.

This anime had a really promising start. But halfway, it just turned into heavy verborragia that almost made me sleep. I don't know if I'll have to rewatch it to understand better, but it was its fault to tell everything in a complicated and specific fashion.

These episodes felt twice as long, they dragged like ####.
In the end i did not care for any characters except Chandy and she was shafted by Keita.
She helped him so much but he never even mentioned her once after she was supposedly killed, selfish or what.
I hope never to watch one as boring as this again.

This series really turned out to be a slog. Promising start: nice combination of creepy-factor and slapstick. But then it just dragged on and on. Unfocused, nothing to grip on to. Sadly disappointing.

Such a tense and elaborate final episode. Kept me in anticipation until the very last second of it. I've seen plenty of esoteric endings in anime before, but this is one of the few that felt legitimately gratifying. Betterman in general does a fantastic job of excelling in pretty much every facet of anime design, which is astonishing.
