Nowak is such a well built Antagonist, I almost felt sad for him, but he did get a taste of his own medicine.

"I SHAVED 60 BEGGARS HEADS TO MAKE A BOOK " - I can see the Youtube views rolling in. But in all seriousness, is it complete luck that this system would work at all. What the hell was Badeni Smoking? To painfully tattoo 60 peoples heads, who are highly likely to die of diseases, that roam around, that will not mention it to anyone else and find the right person specifically 1 month after not receiving bread.
@KOTFTW I think that is exactly why Badeni said that the chances of plan succeeding were extremely low when in prison and talking to Oczy

I don't buy it. There must have been a better way...
Using people as pages of a book is just way too unreliable. Add that to the list of reasons why I hate Badeni...
The first half was decent, but I think it would have been better if we were led to believe that Jolenta had died.
The scene of Nowak crying (as well as their backstory) would be a lot more powerful that way.
Learning how she survived can wait for when she inevitably returns. It would be bad writing if she doesn't return!
This is Chekhov's Jolenta (/gun)! There is no reason for her to survive if she doesn't come back later.
Knowing that Jolenta is alive also makes Grabowski less important, 'cause he's not the only one who can pass the torch.
At first I thought SHE would be the next main character. (I would at least be more hyped if that was the case!)
Overall, the events are not bad, but the execution could have been a lot better.
(This goes for the chapter of Oczy & Badeni as a whole imo...)

@ropiel
She didn't appear in this episode because she was escaping away and it also didn't have any part for her to appear.
She survived because one of the priests helped her escape. Then Antony told Nowak that his daughter was dead because he wanted to destroy Nowak and also wanted to ruin Nowak's reputation. So, he killed and burned the priest who let Jolenta escape and pretended that this burning corpse was Jolenta's.

Good episode, nothing more to say but I will leave here the translation of Jolenta letter to Nowak, I tried to translate them alongside with grammar mistakes made by her, it was difficult to make similar mistakes in English, it wasn't easy to read few words but I think I've did it with 90-95+% of accuracy

The original text:
Do ojciec

„Dzięki pracujesz dla bóg i nas również dzisiaj. Uwielbiam ją ponieważ zawsze ze działają energicznie nawet w deszczowe lub wietrzne dni. Byłam szczęśliwa, mogąc zbierać kwiaty i słuchać śpiewu ptaków, gdy szłyśmy ramię. Dziękuje, że przyszedłaś spotkać się ze mna o zmroku. Zawsze jesteś taki miły ojciec.”

Translation

Title - To father [with error, which I can't translate]

"Thanks you work for god and us to also today. I love her becouse always with act energetical even in rainy or windy days. I was happy, can collect flowers and listen birds singing when we walked arm. Thank you, that you comed to meet with me at dusk. You always are such nice father."

Translation as how it should have sound correctly or at least to make more sense:

Thank you father for working today for God's sake aswell as us. I love your job [as of the context it can only lead into job], because it always works energetic to me, even in rainy and windy days. I was happy as I could collect flowers and listen to birds singing, when we walked by holding out hands [As I think it was meant to be "szłyśmy/szliśmy w ramię" which can be understood as walking while holding hands]. Thank you that you've came to meet me at dusk. You have always been such a nice father"

I did not expect things to go this way for "Jolenta" and the inquisitor who freed her! The poor guy did not deserve to die, but it's not surprising that they would kill him since he knew too much. One thing that surprises me, though, is them deciding to pass off his remains as Jolenta's. I would think that, even back then, people would be able to tell the difference between a male and a female skeleton based on limb proportions, and the size of the pelvis, skull, and rib cage.

Nowak's reaction to everything was subdued; he seems to still be in shock (or maybe he can't quite believe what he's being told?). The flashback was a great insight into the pair's dynamic and relationship with God.

Finally, I enjoyed the passing of the torch from Badeni to Grabowski. I was quite shocked with the method of preservation chosen to keep the knowledge around, but I'm looking forward to seeing things unfold!

A little background, inspired by a 'movement' among churchmen.
Anton Praetorius, German pastor, theologian. At first he wrote a treatise on how to ruthlessly fight witches, heretics, servants of false gods. But when he was put on trial, he was personally interrogated and tortured, and he reconsidered his views. He caused a scandal and one witch was released (three died of torture). But he was no longer welcome (he was not invited) and had to move to the Palatinate. There he wrote 'A thorough report on witchcraft and sorcerers', a work that condemned the trials of witches and sorcerers.
And of course there was a lot of tinfoil hats. Balthasar Nuss is a favourite of the local bishop. As the bishop's position was precarious, he appointed Balthazar as an inquisitor to travel around and execute wealthy citizens. In this way, opponents, including potential opponents, were eliminated and the treasury was replenished. However, half of the confiscated property went to Balthazar himself. 270 people in four years. In the end, the bishop died and the good neighbours reminded the Inquisitor of everything. He was imprisoned for twelve years for illicit enrichment and finally beheaded. In general, in many trials, vested interests and political motives are clearly visible.

As a polish person - Jolenta letter from flashbacks gave me physical pain, i dont understand why no one is consulting anyone when they must write something in foreign language... and its not only about polish language... after pronouncing the name Oczy (which is funny in itself - I start to understand Germans and their cringe while watching Frieren) I didn't think that something here would hurt more, but they managed to do it, I can't wait to see what else they will surprise me with...anyway this episode was really good!

@CowconutMilk It's always like that, europe in anime represented in a very trivial way cuz the main audience is actually Japanese, correct representation is not neccessary.
I remember old ecchi manga about russian dude "Seikon no Qwaser", and there he had something like power of iron and he was screaming the word 'Utyug', which is indeed a word for an iron in english, with only exception that it is word for flatiron and not for an actual metal (in russian word for iron metal is zhelezo). Author probably did couple of runs of google translate, first he translated iron from japanese to english and then from english to russian, sadly english is a very poor language in terms of words and most words have multiple meaning. What can I say, most colors in english don't even have different names they just add a very non-poetic explanation to existing colors like light blue or dark blue etc.

Good subversion of expectations by letting Jolenta survive (for now) and still making Nowak feel the impact.

Extremely convoluted way of passing knowledge, and too must trust on that priest. But I guess we have to embrace this as Badeni's genius. Realistically all this needs a backup option too though.
"All truth is meaningless. In the end, 'meaning' comes from the mind of each individual human. Even when there is a single truth, it can mean different things to different individuals. The truth has no meaning in itself!" - Erika Furudo

If you asked me where the truth is, I would never think it would be in the bald heads of beggars. It is in these moments that the anime takes you out of the reality of the time and shows you that it is an anime. It is still interesting that the priest Grabowski did not hesitate to become a heretic to continue the research, but where is Jolenta?

Hope we'll see Jolenta again. As much as I despise Nowak, I'll still be happy if one day he sees Jolenta or finds a hint that she's alive. Maybe the other young inquisitor will tell him the truth (who else would?).

For now, it seems like Grabowski will be our new MC.

someone make a fanart of Badeni as All Might, and father Grabowski as Midoria in the "now it's your turn" scene, XD (I might end up trying myself)

@arc1only She may be from the next episode when Grabowski takes the responsibility to pass on the torch from Badeni and Oczy, so she may play a part. With the revelation of the "books" to Grabowski he sort of officially takes charge in passing on the information so i expect him to be in the intro on the next episode together with Jolenta.

Jolenta's fate legit broke me, her death was probably so graphic they didn't even gave us a speck of it, i really hope that atleast she didn't burn alive.... these religious authority using holy text as munition is probably the most horrific thing you can ever do, truly despicable, scared of theories really shows how unstable the whole thing is.

Anyhow didn't expect the priest to be the successor, hope he has a better fate than our main characters from before but i sadly doubt it (also Badeni's a mad genius with that tatoo thing)

Oh damn they really didn't let that inquisitor off at all. I expected torture but I wasnt sure they would kill him. Seems his words show he doesn't have as malicious views of heretics as others, while before it only seemed like he only let Jolenta off assuming her innocence. Still though I am not sure why he thought he could convince the very people who are in on the conspiracy or maybe he just didnt notice everyone who was in the room.

I can't be only one who thinks Jolenta's face in the flashback looked too old for a 4 year old.

Even though Nowak can be so cold hearted in his devotion I teared up a little at him having a delayed breakdown over thinking Jolenta is dead.

Having a bunch of beggars be used as book pages is pretty wild. Seems they don't know what a book is or just don't have a clue what is tattooed on their heads.

@teraphIl1000 There was no skeleton left, they carbonized the body until it turned to dust, so "they would have no body to be resurrected on the day of judgment" this is the ending that the heretics receive, as stated in the anime.

Humanity knows no greater pain than that of a single parent losing their only child. This was Nowak's apocalypse - the end of the world as he knew it. If and when he finds out the truth, there's going to be a bloodbath.

Of all the people I would not suspect Grabowski to take over Badeni's work. It makes sense in retrospect, he was always inquisitive and had at least some modicum of respect for Badeni, but damn. Grabowski is our guy now. Also explains why Oczy was still the OP face this episode - they needed to postpone the reveal.

Hope Jolanta is fine. Conventional TV wisdom dictates that she survives and reunites with her dad at some point, but with this series you can never be sure.

Man, what a great, great show!

Had to watch this episode much later than what I wanted to, because the episode was taking so much time to be available for some reason. When it was in fact released, it was already at a time I needed to focus on my studies, so only today I was able to catch up to it (watching the new episode right after this one).

Anyways, amazing episode, especially the character development we got from Nowak, it was something that all of us wanted for a long time now, and we finally got it! The scene showing the story behind the gloves, and making the contrast between when he was holding Jolenta's hands with the gloves, and then holding Jolenta's gloves, but without her wearing them was a really emotional scene, being one of the most emotional scenes in the anime so far, alongside Nowak's scene crying.

Not only this, but we got the revelation of Badeni's plan, that honestly no one was expecting. Badeni had a mind that really goes beyond what someone could expect. Although not really moraly correct, but using the homeless to record his findings was really genius. And it seems like Badeni's partner in the church is having an hard time knowing that his tip eventually led to Badeni's death, and is actually tempted to follow his research and make it possible for his research to prevail through times. Also, none of this would be achieved without Oczy's kindness, so Oczy was essential for this to work out too.

The initial scene with the young man that saved Jolenta was really sad, because I knew they were going to kill him, but it's sad to see that such a pure-hearted person just got burned to death by doing what church was preaching, and not serving the selfish purposes of that guy. His partner also didn't do anything, even though they were "friends". I wonder if he's going to ever tell Nowak the truth.

Also, it's clear Nowak understands that the story they told was not the truth.

The opening and ending maintain the same, but seeing we are moving to the next generation, I wonder if the opening ot the ending will change next episode. One good thing of watching the episode this late, is that I can already jump to the next episode!
