Am I the only one who found it weird/unnecessary that the MC was 14? It feels like the story would’ve been the same if he was older. It just felt weird to me, but none of my friends have watched it so I wanted other people’s opinions.

I'm finishing it right now, and yes his young age is definitely weird and unnecessary. I would have enjoyed it more if he was at least 17 or something, but since he's literally in middle school it feels inappropriate.

@sekaistar Yep, you're the only one who feels like that. You need to read what's next in manga to understand the Nazuna's situation.

The whole story is centered around him maturing and finding out what he wants to do. That's why he's 14. If he was older it wouldn't make sense.

@NoelleIsSleepy You must consider the fact that it is more likely that a 14-year-old boy does not know what it is to fall in love.
It would be weird to see a 17 year old boy so lost

I won't give you spoilers, I'll just say that her situation is... "special".
Don't worry, season 2 shouldn't take long to come out.

Exactly. Especially with the journey of self-discovery that usually happens in college. Just made me feel a little icky with all of this (esp the romance) when he’s 14.

The only weird thing you should wonder is that none of the adults reported a case of a minor stopping going to school and having questionable night activities, so that this shit would never have any raison d'être to begin with. But this is a deliberate conformation to otaku culture, for starters, so THE. WORLD. MUST. BE. INDIFFERENTLY. HOSTILE. TO. THEM.

There’s no way this would work with a college kid.

In college if you stop showing up, they will literally expel you.

It’s just stupid to complain about the age of a fictional character, if you don’t like it, don’t watch it, simple as that.

but that's not the case here, not like he is a shit in, or introvert who didn't had that many social interaction.

And maybe the social interactions for middle and high school students there are not what we thought.

He's 14 because in Japan that's about when you are expected to soon know what you will do for the rest of your life because how their education system is set up and how much pressure is placed on them. It's basically just a "I wish I had that happen to me at his age" because that could be viewed as a last hope time and as such the viewer is given a freedom fantasy that they could have escaped their dreary wage slave life in a suffocatingly stuffy society.

That's confirmation bias. You aren't looking at other ages and countries most likely. Japan's overall rates of pregnancy are low at any age which is why Japan's population is in decline. A bit of increase during Covid-19 only shows the obvious that more free time means more sex. Though it is worth noting I have heard Japan doesn't have a very good sex education but that doesn't only effect teens but all ages there.

Yeah, as people above have pointed out, 14 years old is a very significant age in Japan, where youngsters are expected to decide and start planning their future. Protagonist is currently going through his own crisis and is not sure what he wants to do with his whole future ahead of him. People who think it is about some sort of pedo fantasies are simply projecting. Just like an author of that infamous negative review. Somebody should seriously check their hard drive.

Why did you delete your post just to repeat yourself?

It isn't difficult to understand sex without condoms or contraceptives leads to pregnancy and more time leads to more sex. I already said Japan supposedly has poor sexual education and this effects everyone there.

Rate of general unplanned pregnancies in Japan was about 40% ten years ago.

If you do not like stories with young MCs, just shut up and dont watch them, the anime clearly was not made for you if the age of the main character is such a problem, in Japanese fiction young aged main characters are the most popular choice for a reason

oh brother, here we go again...

MC is 14 - 2: Electric Boogaloo

If the author wrote it that way, it's supposed to be that way. If you don't like it, don't consume it, or rewrite the entire thing yourself and fix whatever you are hung up on. Most people aren't seeking shows out based on character age, it's all part of the experience.

The world has many rules, but many countries, and many differences.

p.s. this is a cartoon with fictional characters, moving pictures on a screen, worse has been published on film.

I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but Kotoyama has said before that Kou is 14 solely because the series is inspired by the song Yofukashi no Uta by Creepy Nuts, the same song that plays as the ED in season one. I mean, even the title of the manga was inspired by the title of the song. Read the translated lyrics and it will make sense. The song is about a 14-year-old boy who sneaks out and goons around, experiencing the city nightlife at night when he should be asleep. There is no deeper meaning to Kou's age. It starts and stops with, "Kou is 14 because the character in the song that inspired the series is 14".

this is such an insane take, most 17 year olds don’t know what it’s like to fall in love. Hell, most people in general don’t. It’s not like,,,,,,,,, a 14 year old boy thing. The MC could be 20 and it wouldn’t really change all that much tbh

@Thicc_Ink it seems you don't understand the message the author is giving you in the plot.
Clarifying your emotions is a fundamental part of growing up. Generally, this phase occurs during puberty.
You rediscover yourself, experience many things for the first time (including love), and begin to look for a purpose in life to move forward and give meaning to your life.
I don't know, but it doesn't seem all that strange for a 14-year-old boy to go through such a change.
Now, on the other hand...I don't know what Kou's problem is. Is it because of the age difference with Nazuna? Because if you guys are saying that, it seems ridiculous to me.

don’t put words in my mouth, i know what the show is about. You said it would be weird to see a 17 year old boy so lost, i said that’s stupid. I never mentioned if I thought his age was a problem. It’s a story about sex and relationships and puberty, which is all stuff a 17 or 18 year old is still going through. I understand why the author made Kou 14, but it’s stupid to act like the themes of the story are inseparably tied to his age being specifically 14. You’re just saying what everyone already knows, we all watched the same show, you’re just ignoring the point in this conversation and acting like you’re smarter for not engaging.

@Thicc_Ink sorry if I didn't explain myself well. The point is that in most cases these changes start at Kou's age, so I find it difficult to consider the same situation with someone older. Surely there are cases just as you say, but honestly they must cover a small percentage. I don't know where you are from, but at least from where I am writing to you, puberty and those changes in feelings begin at 14, even earlier; perhaps with some special cases. And it's a normal fact, because the hormones are acting.
And I think you are wrong about something after all... The story goes beyond sex, relationships and puberty... It is simpler and at the same time complicated than that: Beginning of maturity in a teenager.
It is true that it covers what you say, but it doesn't focus on it. It's just a part of growing up.
I apologize if I offended you... I didn't mean to. At the end of the day, I'm just commenting on how I perceived the story.

@Whitingbolt I assume this to be the most likely answer
kinda weird that no one else mentioned it
