My scores are super arbitrary, 10s are just anime I really really liked or had some profound effect on me, it’s not necessarily tied to it’s quality. Most of my ratings sit around 5s which is my “It was fine I have nothing to say about it” score, everything kinda scales from there.
You know what, I completely agree, even though it's paradoxical: I really like thinking about shows too, I think about them a lot — but only certain parts of them, and it depends on the show.
I think every show has a core appeal, which I guess is basically its genre, and if it delivers on that, if the heart of it is good, then I think about that, and I don't mind the rest. So the appeal of Domestic Girlfriend to me would be the scene-by-scene Sturm und Drang, and less so the overarching plot.
If the characters ultimately failed to develop in interesting ways over the course of however many volumes (and I'll take your word for it, because I don't remember it that well), I might not notice it — not in this show. Which does make the franchise less than perfect — a bit lacking in depth — maybe a 7 or 8 out of 10?
Your Domestic Girlfriend manga review is fun to read.
I can't really disagree — sure, the yakuza arc and the New York restaurant arc and a bunch of other arcs just kind of appear out of nowhere and go nowhere and vanish into nothing. And sure, Rui is a weirdo — actually, I thought she was meant to be slightly autistic — maybe that's just me. But the truth is, I wasn't thinking very hard about any of it: I just really enjoy anime soap operas, like True Beauty and Higehiro and to a lesser extent Oshi no Ko.

So try True Beauty if you haven't yet!
