I'm curious about the show because it's so highly rated, but I'm not a fan of graphic violence and there's a lot of chatter about the gore in this show...so, how bad is it actually?

For reference, I don't care about red ink all over the place, but I don't like to be shown graphic wounds. I can't watch the Castlevania series because it was so graphic, for example, and I watched To Your Eternity, but had to look away in places. Last season's Dawn of the Witch was a bit much for me, as well, particularly with the lizard guy. It wasn't the fact that he got bits cut off that bothered me, it was the meaty view of the wounds.

This is more of a hopeless dread horror than gore. But based on what you said, the moments of gore and grotesque bodily mutilations that are there might be too much for you.

Yeah this show probably isn’t for you. It shows bone breakages and pretty gruesome wounds.

What others have said is true but it makes up only a fraction of the show, there are some scenes you may want to look away from or even skip but it’s a great show so you should give it a chance.

Thanks for the replies everyone...this may be the only time I've ever -wanted- a censored version of a show

It's very graphic. I can usually handle violence and gore, but I had a hard time with it.

The censored version is skipping the gore scenes (though the dialogue in them is important)

I could stomach Higurashi, which is famous for being overly gory...but Made in abyss is so far the only anime that has actually given me a nightmare. The gore and disturbing stuff is quite infrequent (at least so far as I haven't read the manga), but when it comes, it comes HARD. This was a rare occasion when I read all the content warning and review warnings, watched the show anyway, and then finished thinking - man they did not exaggerate.

I wouldnt call it violence as much as i would call it “body horror.” Its bad in a few episodes, but it makes the story more impactful. Its not violence for violence sake. it has meaning within the show

The show is very graphic. I didn’t have to look away from AOT but I had to look away a couple of times with this show and the movie. Story is amazing and it’s a great show. But it is very dark and graphic at some parts

I think I remember one scene where a character looked like she was gonna explode if they didn't cure her and they had to cut someone's body part too, so you could hear the screams.

its not just gore. The worst seen has a character forced to cut their own leg off in just about the most brutal way possible. it's a great show. but if you cant view weird pedo-ish stuff and essentially torture then do t touch it.
He died doing what he wanted, no matter what, right? I bet he was happy.

Ok, maybe few is not the best word seeing how this show is only 13 episodes long but sheesh.

There are mutilations and a few graphic scenes, including body horror but it really isn't anywhere near as bad as people in this thread are making it out to be. However, from what you said in your post, you're probably very squeamish and can't handle these scenes very well, so what's mild to me may seem severe to you. In that case, it isn't for you.

it’s mostly body horror and the context behind it mostly deformations and gruesome transformations there is also DIY surgery scene in s2 it’s nothing shocking

Dawn of the Witch is tame compared to what happens in this show.

I was disturbed in places, I think you may be traumatized.

Actually it's normal rated gore, like another gore stories. However, what it make it worse probably the object of gore. It is freakin bunch of children dude. They aren't sexualize the child (which it's good), they aren't hard trained average 12 years anime child (like HxH, joke) WHICH MAKE IT WORSE.

What make it really r-rated is, it's a normal life of children that supposed to be happy and vice versa, but somehow it turned to be "make a 12 yo become a rabbit and destroy the brain."

Humble experience: I read the manga without examine the tags, and the scene really trigger me. I used to read gore, thriller, or horror. But what make me triggered is THE CHILD.

I wouldn't call it disgusting or violent but it is quite disturbing but not as much as Devilman though. I highly recommend this show and to people whom I have recommended this, I told them not to eat while watching this because if you are you will genuenly want to throw up.

There’s a fair bit of body horror and disturbing scenes, but I personally didn’t think the gore was especially graphic. Nothing that had me wincing or looking away.

There are scenes that feature a lot of body horror (liquidation, limbs torn off). There is also a lot of blood. Although not violence, there are some scenes that feature nudity that some might find disturbing considering that they are children. The most disturbing scene featuring nudity is in the 3rd movie which is necessary to watch before season 2.

it gets retty intense and dark. looks like an anime for kids. but in reality it gets into really dark areas. although it is still very enjoyable to watch I recommend to watch it 10/10 but you should be warned it gets dark like the last 5 episodes in the 1st season or so. Not to scary at the start actually quite enjoyable. want to watch it again just by talking about it.

imo its not so much a visual thing as it is Messing with your brain. I have 0 problems with watching drawings get mutilated but the nature of the characters, their age and overall appearance (blobby blobs) will probably make you feel unconfortable.

although in my opinion there are very few anime that portray human cruelty like this one.

This show is as much about despair and hopelessness as it is about the joy of discovery and surpassing challenges. The happy moments feel very happy but the dark moments are very very grim indeed.

tldr probably not for you
