As the title says do I need to watch HoneyWorks Anime series to understand this or is it a completely new series?

Kono Sekai no Tanoshimikata is definitely needed. I didn't watch the movie prior because I thought it is not that important enough to watch before watching Heroine Tarumono!, but when I watched ep.2 and saw that mini anime recommending the movie and watched it, it definitely answered what Hiyori was curious (manager only briefly mentioned the reasons). This is what I mentioned in ep.2 discussion

It is true that all of honeyworks' series are connected to one universe, but I don't think you'll need to watch it all before heroine tarumono. Sure, you can watch the second movie to get familiarize with the second generation cast but this series is mainly about Hiyori's story.

We do have a film about the two idols and how they started but it isn't available to overseas atm. I can reccomend watching to her character songs "Heroine Tarumono" and "Heroine Ikusei Keikaku"

to be fair, you don't, I just started watching this and I'm understanding perfectly, I didn't even know it was a continuation of something else, it's pretty much direct to the point, girl comes from little town, doesn't know anything about idols, ends up being hired as their manager just because she's on the same school, they hate each other but keep the picture of happy boy band, (all of that you can gather from the trailer) there was nothing there that made me think "I should've watched the other one first"

No, you can just watch it without any prior knowledge. This is Hiyori's story, and it's self-contained. If you get curious about the various idols that show up and want to learn more about them, you can check their stuff out, but it's not necessary to enjoy or understand the plot of this anime.
