I usually check the “Shared Anime” under “Affinity to You” on someone’s profile to see how their scores compare to ours. It doesn’t mention how many episodes they watched, however. It’s a convenient way to compare interests, aside from that one setback.
Considering how popular Lycoris is, I assumed the worst (that you’ve seen the whole thing). I haven’t actually watched any (complete) episodes of Lycoris Recoil, but I know enough reasons to avoid it. One of the later episodes is focused around panties. That alone is discomforting, and there could be similar occurrences in later episodes. I suggest dropping it if it becomes uncomfortable to watch.

You claim to dislike ecchi and fanservice, yet you gave Lycoris Recoil an 8? Unless you’re being hypocritical, I don’t understand why you did this.

Hey so I'm guessing you're not feeling a burning desire to respond to the essay I sent you (it may also be that you don't have much else to say in which case I completely understand), I'm still interested in talking to you though so maybe I'll try again. Feel free to respond still if you feel like it, I'm certainly still receptive to a response.

One thing I'm curious about is your creative writing, can you tell me anything about that? Also what games do you play, I tend to play puzzle games like Zachtronics but I'll occasionally play some big releases like persona or elden ring, Breath of the wild and things like that, shooters I tend to stick away from though.

Loved your vinland saga 2 review, it hit a lot of the crucial points of what's wrong with the 2nd season lmao

although a 6/10 is still such a kind rating :)

Sorry for the long reply, please don't hate me because of it xD

My my you really love to write don't you (said the logorhea addict), well I quite enjoy reading as well so I don't mind, in fact, one of the reasons I wanted to chat was cause I saw you write an essay's worth everytime you have something to say, I respect that.

Yeah I'm aware that the Myerr Briggs test is somewhat unscientific, but its probably better than nothing (I hear the big five classification is better). You know , until you mentioned it I completely missed that you had listed 50% Introvert extrovert, so I guess what you mean to tell me is that my hopes of meeting a fellow introvert that can smack me over the head with their long winded takes has failed XD We'll see I guess, 50/50 is not a bad split. I myself ususally get around 80-90% introversion so I reckon if there is such as introversion thing I have it.

Yeah apparently INTP is a little rare, I don't know how I could look for that specifically, and it's not like its my terminal goal or anything to surround myself with friends that have the exact same personality as me, In this instance the combo of enjoyable long winded writing and seemingly similar personalities struck my interest.

Let me begin by saying I am very thankful you're coming in the discussion with the intention of schooling me, tbh I very much confused on the subject as well lol, and the real reason I want to discuss it with you is perhaps so that I can understand what I mean myself. To make this 100% clear, I don't really like romance all that much, but I want to like it, I want to find a way to like it especially as my own creation, this is where this conversation is coming from. Anyway, on to the reply

I am really taken by surprise by your first comment that you don't really like anime romance, judging from your profile I was expecting that you would be really into it, sorry for reading into things too much. I very much like your comment that romantic love is experienced differently by each person. This ties in heavily with other conversations I've had about what makes romance engaging which have tended to fall into a stalemate exactly because of this phenomenon. I still wish you would not throw your hands up in the air so much when it comes to "showing" the romance though, I still feel like there must be some value in being explicit, point taken though. Regarding this point let me ask you, particularly when we get into the thinking that the series does not end when the dating starts as I'll discuss in a bit, do you have any examples or thoughts regarding how this viewpoint (romance must be purposely vague to cater to the individuals sensibilities) can be reconciled with more explicit story telling. Maybe this is just a man thing but I like it when things are explicit, in my mind implicit things are like the extras for the attentive viewers, the cherry on top, not the cake itself.

Let me try to explain a bit better, what I said was that "romance TM", a term I misuse to mean romance anime the way I understand it, an medium that appeals to emotion that does not harbor much meaning does not interest me. Romance in general (i.e. not romance TM) often carries meaning (i.e. the characters engaging with each other means something) but in those cases this meaning comes at the cost of the appeal to emotion or alternatively it comes in the tragic variant. So what I'm effectively saying is that I want both in one vessel, the meaning and the happy appeal to emotion, not that appeal to emotion is bad, but rather, that it is cheap when it does not exist alongside meaning whatever that means.

The thesis for my use of the word conflict is that tragic romance tends to be the only romance with meaning, or at least it so vastly outnumbers shows of the happy variety that a non-romance watcher such as myself perceives it that way. Yes conflict does not have to exist inside the romance but here's how my thinking goes, "if there is no conflict in the romance there is no story", "if there is conflict in the romance the romance will be tragic", "if there is conflict alongside a happy romance then even if the story on a whole works, the romance is tacked on, the conflict must be intertwined inseparably with the romance". Now I think all 3 of these statements are wrong in subtle or not so subtle ways but the point of the discussion is sort of to figure out the why.

Reading through the examples you give (couple expecting baby and couple moving in together)I think already at this early stage in the discussion we may have reached an impasse. These are actually very good premises for a romances that almost do what I want, i.e. they don't put the romance in jeopardy (mostly) and they provide conflict that is intertwined with the romance. My only issue is that in my eyes these are still just appeals to emotion, the characters in these stories are not vessels, they are real people living real lives, for me real lives are meant to be lived by real people and stories are meant to be lived by characters that are vessels for the authors ideas. Now you might say there are so many ideas that go into writing those premises you listed out what are you talking about, it sounds like you are just sitting in an ivory tower and looking down on the common struggles of life. There's some truth to this but hear me out, let me at least try to explain what I mean by "meaning" by giving you an example.

So one of my stories in my ill-fated manga that is not to be is of a man who calls himself the collector. As his name suggests he is obsessed with collecting, so much so that he has devoted his life to that end and warped his perception of reality accordingly. For him there exist only objects, he himself is an object, an object that collects other objects. When he meets the protagonist they have a conversation regarding his dream, to find the object of artifaction, an object so intricate that it can manufacture any other , then his journey as a collector would be complete. But the man is a collector, not someone who creates, therefore his dream can never be granted ( the object of artifaction is actually a person). The protagonist ponders this for a moment and exclaims that who is he to decide the limits and the abilities of an object that has the capability to change, a person, but the man tersely replies, that is your ability not mine. Given this conundrum the protagonist decides to show the collector how he is both wrong and right. I can't tell you exactly what happens without going into details about my story but quantitatively speaking she gives him the object thinking. This is a thought, that for the collector manifests as an item. This item reveals to him a certain truth, that thoughts are for him objects that exist in two places simultaneously, in the mind and as objects
, since the collector has the ability to think thoughts he has the ability to create. He is not doomed to forever be collecting, he can create.

Now you might say that is a nice story and all but where exactly is this meaning you speak of. I can't pinpoint it exactly but I hope you felt what I meant. Perhaps meaning is not a good word for it.

I have heard this opinion that the getting together is the most exciting part of the relationship but somehow I cannot entirely agree. Yes, it is an important and exciting part of the process, of that there is no doubt, but if only to preserve the mythos of romance as something that is worth pursuing in principle I cannot stand the idea that the start is really all that matters. If nothing else I am just really burned out on the getting together part, no matter how limp and misshapen I want to see the rest, its novel for me in that way. Perhaps I should give horimiya a go, my brother has also recommended it to me so that makes you the second person to do so :D

Yeah, your name is kinda similar, but I want to stress that my idea was not a solution, it was a failed solution to get us talking.

I'm curious to hear if you think my little story I told you counts as "lecturing". I would say if a story comes off as lecturing its not really embodying the ideas it wants to present, its a propaganda piece. Anyway, I think we're in agreement here, subtlety is a virtue when it comes to this sort of thing

Regarding you last comment: No worries, that's honestly kind of how I operate as well, not to mention I think things are gonna get quite busy for me once I begin on my masters thesis so this whole chatting thing may not last that long depending (although I suppose one always makes time for their interests). And in any case, I feel like if you don't care to log in to read my responses I view that as my own failure to be an engaging conversation partner so really it is you who should feel free to unfriend me if that happens :D

P.s. I really wish you'd answered my other question though, i.e. topics interest you, especially now that I find out anime romance is not entirely within your wheelhouse, I don't want to bore you with stuff you don't care about
Anjuro Apr 11, 2023 4:36 AM
Ah I see, I was getting confused there for a second (I was like how sleepy is this person exactly, even my dog is not this sleepy xD). No worries then take as long as you need
Anjuro Apr 9, 2023 4:21 PM
Hello again, I see my last message did not inspire a reply, I think I'll just start talking and you can see if there's something you want to respond to.

One thing I wanted to talk to you about was romance anime, I saw you said you liked romance so I thought you might have a thing or two to say about the subject. Anyway, specifically what I'm interested in is romance premises that are about more than just an appeal to emotion, I've been thinking about this subject for my own story for some time now but I can't make any progress. Particularly lets talk about happy romances for a second cause that's what interests me the most. My first problem is that romance as a genre seems to be broadly posed as an appeal to emotion, there are stories about love that have substance to them sure but my claim is that these are not really romances exactly because they tend to ditch happiness or the appeal to emotion to pursue plot (of course I'm sure there are exceptions and I welcome you to tell me about them). What I want is the equivalent of how meaningful friendships can be but for a romance, I'm thinking something like Yan Wen li x Frederica but happy. So at this point I realize I'm probably not making much sense but let me lay down some concrete thoughts. One aspect of what I call a "meaningful romance" is that the characters have to be vessels for something, the appeal to emotion is the thing that is going to make us care about those abstract ideas. What is particularly perplexing for me is how do you do this with a happy romance, after all it is said that stories are about conflict, when there is no conflict there is no story, happy romances show us a relationship that is fully formed, that is free from true conflict. One neat idea that I had is then lets think about what a romance is, a collaborative relationship, so what if the conflict is also collaborative. i.e A standard tragic romance premise would be something like I want to be the best at X, if I become the best my loved one will die, I need to choose between the two all the while knowing my loved one would want me to be the best, the loved one takes her own life. There is substance in this premise but how do we make it happy godamn it. Here's my "happy revision" I want to be the best at X. if I become the best my lover will die. My soul becomes trapped inside my girlfriend. She wants me to be happy so she will become the best at X. I will become the best at Y which is my girlfriends dream.

So basically the idea here is that you take a tragic premise and you start at the tragic part (i.e. I can't fulfill my dream). Now the new conflict of the romance is not whether I will choose love over my dream but whether my love is strong enough to fulfill my dream. I like some aspects of this idea, it's cute and it allows us to have a story that does not need to end when the dating starts but as per my own rules its still kind of light on the substance i.e. what specifically is going to be the conflict in this show. Oh no, I didn't take out the trash in time and now my SO is going to hate me so my dream will never vicariously come true. It feels like there's still something missing.

So to sum everything up once again, it kinda feels to me like you need the love to be in jeopardy or sidelined to have a meaningful romance but I'm stubborn and I don't like that, I want to write a happy romance that is also meaningful.
Thoughts, Ideas? Feel free to tell me how I'm making no sense btw XD

Hi thanks for accepting my request :D
I noticed we have almost the same personality (mine is INTP if the survey I did is to be believed) which is kinda rare for me (I don't think I've ever seen anyone with the exact same personality as a matter of fact). If possible I'd like to get to know you a little bit to see if we could be friends. Name's angel nice to meet'cha. I was wondering if you could give me like a 2 sentence synopsis about what you're like and what I can talk to you about. Feel free to ask me anything as well :D

And thanks for your compliment too ^^ I came up with the idea to put them there just recently xD and now I search for more to add them. Do you happen to know some cute cats?
