Welcome to week 2 folks. As I'm sure you can tell from my earlier bit there (or just by looking at the characters' favorites lol), here we are introduced to two fan-favorite characters. As always, I'm lookin' forward to what y'all feel about the story (...that is, if they don't keep butchering it, but I think you all know that it's gonna happen sadly), but I'm also even more excited to see how you all feel about these characters in particular.
I still don't know how exactly to describe my feelings about the pacing and how the story is executed so far though. I do appreciate the work they've done on the fight scenes, but it honestly feels like there's no impact or real struggle in them and that Neku is just destroying anything without effort (even though he does visibly struggle in harder fights). Is it the lack of epic rock music (though the Day 2 fight with Taboo Noise had a bit of that at least)? Is it the pacing? Is it the shot compostition/presentation? I have no idea, but it just feels like nothing and that they really take away from the story by making it as an excuse to cut so much of the game's charm out. Maybe it's because I've played the game and therefore know what's going to happen unless the anime decides to pull a Promised Neverland S2 move and adapt in A New Day or something just to further piss me off, so the element of surprise might have not worked that well, but... I just feel like something about this show is kinda... average... and as I've said with the first episode, the odd pauses in between dialogue just make me feel like I'm watching Kingdom Hearts cutscenes again... great.......
Well, I don't remember this new "Player vs. Player. To the death." mission that zetta crazy mathematician pulls out of nowhere. Don't remember Neku trying to save the other Players like that, and I definitely don't remember seeing them fight each other either. Don't get me wrong, one of the things I really like about this adaptation so far is that certain characters got a bit more screentime and that we actually get to see more of the other Players; in that way, it really convinces you that there are others in this Shinigami's/Reaper's Game too and not just Neku. But I just feel like this brand new scene literally ONLY exists just so the anime has an excuse to show the audience that Neku has changed since week 1. And in all honesty, that kinda feels so fake to me, especially since the anime cuts out many of the little scenes from the game that actually SHOWED you him changing bit by bit and showing you that there's more to him than just being cynical rather than him SPELLING it out to the audience like over here. And like I said about the fight scenes, somehow it all feels like nothing and unimpactful. Gotta love when all nuance and subtlety and stuff needs to get thrown out of the window, amirite?? *sighs*
Also, half of this episode felt like a recap of the first week with all the flashbacks to previous episodes. Like I get some people are forgetful, but I mean, couldn't it just been fine for Neku to remember Beat and Rhyme without literally showing them when they get to THAT area? Oh now we get flashbacks lol? And NOW we see Reaper decals? What was so wrong with showing them earlier? Is it just so they could cut all of the "filler" just to get the main good parts? And why are we NOW getting Taboo Noise lol?
Okay, okay... I'll calm down lol... there's one thing I DID like.
Many of you Players might not realize this, but just before Neku and Joshua perform their Lv2 Fusion against the rhino Noise, they actually say their Lv2 Fusion lines in the original Japanese version of the game ("Come on, Neku" and "Try asking first") ! Very nice detail! I say "might not notice" because their Lv2 Fusion lines are different in the English release (still funny though) and not everyone will bother watching Japanese cutscenes/voice lines of the game.
The garbage heaps also look good and... oh wow, a brand new scene? It's cool to see Eri get more screentime and I kinda get what they were trying to do with this new flower shop scene, kinda-unnecessary flashback reminder and all... whoops, getting negative again hahaha...
...well, I should at least mention Neku's last flashback too.
Was seriously surprised to see actual blood this time, as the original game never shows any blood... I imagine the lack of that was probably the only reason why the game got rated A (CERO's equivalent of "E for Everyone" for those who are not aware) and not a B (equivalent of "T for Teen"), since some similar games I know had blood in it did get rated B... can't mention which ones cuz I don't want to spoil those games hahaha. Mentioning original game aside, yeah, those shots of Neku's dead eyes was a bit startling... in a good way, too.
Well, I sadly doubt I'll be impressed with this show anymore, but I'll see you all later today for next episode, I guess.
