This Joshua guy is quite mysterious, seems to even know about Shiki. And when Shiki touched him, it looks like he saw a vision of Udagawa. Definitely not someone easy to trust.

Shit goes down in the city as usual with those abnormalities. Minamimoto had a badass moment although I wish he got more screen time this episode. Joshua's abilities is also quite something to take notice of.

Bitou in a bad mood is pretty scary...

Time for the second week! The pacing may not be the best, but I’m looking forward to see this week animated because two of my favorite characters from the game have a major presence in this part of the story. Super hyped to finally see Joshua animated! And Minamimoto too! Finally got to hear his zetta lines, and his junk heaps, lol.

It was pretty cool to see Neku encourage the other players. That wasn’t something that was in the game iirc. The entire middle-part of this episode in general was original stuff. Pretty funny to see Minamimoto just throw Uzuki and Kariya under the bus there, lol.

I’m surprised that the anime actually brought up those Shinigami stickers and how those are the only places where they can purchase stuff. A very gamey element that they covered, lol. However, I’m not surprised that they completely cut out Tin Pin Slammer. Although it has a major presence in the game, it’s not actually important to the main story. Might as well cut it out to have more time to pace things better.

And the episode ended with Beat and him attacking Neku. He chose to be a Reaper, but we don’t know what his plans are. Interested to see more of him, alongside Joshua and Minamimoto.

Two days adapted, and the pacing in this episode was actually good this time. I would’ve been more hopeful for this adaptation if they gave the last week another episode. Neku’s character hasn’t had much time to develop and naturally change, so his goals for this week comes off as a little unearned. But hopefully they pace this week better, since it’s probably the most plot-heavy part of the game.

Neku has a new partner now but I don't really like him tbh, he's very mysterious and he seems to work with the evil side, also it's interesting that he's getting his memories back, I guess he died after being stabbed and shot?? That's so weird... the part with Shiki's friend was sad, I really miss Shiki she was a so better partner, I hope that he'll be able to save her later, also Beat at the end with wings damn, so he became a shinigami too? That's a pity.

Shiki is gone, and Neku must do his best to circumvent the current situation of the Reaper's Game: the 2nd Week.

DANG, Kiryu "Joshua" Yoshida's time has finally come, and what a first impression. Looks like the two Player Pins that Neku was holding onto proves vital this time around. As well as the zetta Game Master Reaper Sho Minamimoto, these 2 people are the most prominent characters of the game IMO, Reaper or Player alike.

To give Neku some character development to entice other Players against the Reaper's will, that's a small but noticeable improvement, even if his entry fee was his memories that were once vague but of significant rememberance that are slowly coming back in droves.

The short snippet moment of the Reaper Stickers is surprising that it was covered within those seconds. A nice tidbit for anyone expecting to play the game I guess to build the world-building lore.

Beat becoming a Reaper in this 2nd Week, what's the purpose this time though.

The better pacing thus far.

Neku is back in the game with a new partner this time, Kiryu. He seems like a pretty smart person. They make a powerful duo. But, there's something odd about him. There's a new game master as well. He's a crazy guy.

Beat is back but as a Shinigami this time, I'm still not over Shiki. She was a great character.

Joshua is powerful, but can’t be fully trusted. He’s hiding something for sure. That scan was mad sus. Beat in his grief became a reaper, damn. Lot of stuff dropped on us in this episode. Shiki/ her friend’s scene at the end there was brutal.

Holy damn this episode is probably the best of the bunch so far, but we are getting into the real meat and potatos of the story now. They absolutely NAILED Minamimoto and Joshua's characterisation and can we talk about how good the anime original element was in this episode? It really helped showcase Minamimoto's character having that anime original bonus mission with all the other players and it was super interesting. Cant help but think this is a subtle precursor to the Player VS Player or Team Element coming in NEO The World Ends With You. It was really nice actually seeing other players, thats one thing that the game was really lacking and I like that the anime is inserting moments with other players to help flesh out the games a bit.

That bit with Eri at the end too. I cant help but get teary whenever Eri is on screen and the emotion that comes with it. They really dont pull their punches with the scenes with Eri. Hopefully this is a hint that Eri will have more of a presence in NEO also and I am ALL FOR IT! This episode was great. The pacing was just right and a good outlook for the rest of the series that they didnt squeeze 3 Days into Joshua's weeks opening episode.

Just play the game it’s better in every way, if you have the ability too ofc, not everyone has consoles or likes gaming but if you have a switch, ds or I think ps4/ps5 you should just get those, the anime is a huge disappointment considering the game is so good.

I think this week will be a lot more interesting for the anime-onlys watching this. w

not sure what to feel about how they introduced the shops/reaper decal *now* since it was covered in Week 1. now i'm just wondering when they'll introduce fashion threads since it's also a part of the game mechanic.

I was about to massively compliment the pacing for being decent for once... and then they showed the reaper beat scene now instead of day 3. oh well.

but other than that it was possibly the best paced episode so far, and most importantly THEY KEPT THE FLAWLESS CALCULATIONS AND BEAUTY LINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 this has always been one of my favorite lines in the game for no specific reason lmao. and I'll probably overlook possible mistakes and cuts (rip SLAM........ ON!!!!!!!!!). Husbandos Joshua and Sho so far well characterized. well, Joshua looks more "evil" in the anime than in the game because of lighting/shadow effects I guess? not a complaint.

can't wait for the next episode, as I suppose both day 3 and 4 are gonna be covered, and these are two of my most played episodes wooooooo don't disappoint me anymore pls

This show is really starting to grow on me. I can understand why people loved the game of it so much - especially for a DS game.

Neku's been brought back into the Reaper game for round 2, but this time things are different...

He runs into a man who goes by "Joshua", who knows a peculiar amount about how the Reaper game works. Our suspicious grow on him as Neku is even able to scan him - something thought to have been impossible to players. I wonder just what "Joshua" is, and his motives towards Neku.

Neku has also recovered his memories, which was his price for the first round. We even see a rough idea of how he died.

This happens shortly before Beat makes an appearance. Beat now brandishes black wings, signifying he has chosen to be revived as a reaper. He now seems disinterested in saving Neku and Shiki, nor even his own previous partner. I wonder what pushed him to become a reaper. The obvious trauma he experienced in his first round in losing Rhyme, would be an obvious point. However, his now disinterest in them, raises other alarms.

Yo, I came to kill you.

Punch

K, 'bye.

Honestly I had forgotten Beat becoming a reaper was how he came back. I need to replay this game.

Good episode! Joshua is pretty sus for now, I can't trust him yet, he definitely knows a lot. The dude Sho was referring to when he said "you're a player this time?" was probably Joshua, so I am guessing he was a reaper in the previous week? That's just my guess., well it would explain why he knows shit. But, I wonder how Shiki is able to scan him. Shiki's memories are also coming back, makes sense that since he finished the previous week, he would get back his entry fee which are his memories.

Beat is a reaper now damn, Rhyme's death really got to him. Looking forward to the next episode.

I haven't mentioned it thus far because I thought it wouldn't mesh well with the other stuff I mention in these posts, but whatever I'm going to say it without any concern for cohesion: I really like the OP. One of the things I mentioned in the hype thread for this series was that I hoped Twister made it into the OP, and I'm glad that guy from the band I've never heard of took one for the team to make it a reality. Granted, you can tell the OP was clearly made for another song because of how out of place it sounds, but whatever I'm happy.

Anyways, hell yeah. The Motherfucker I'd Like to Fuck If He Wasn't Fifteen and I Wasn't Straight has finally arrived. It was strange to hear Joshua's Japanese VA because of how much of an attachment I have to his English voice. He sounds way less smug here, though I can't claim to know anything about the way Japanese is spoken, so I won't.

I think what's most entertaining about this episode is that Sho didn't have his reaper wings when he was telling the players to kill each other, which implies that he was in the RG shouting at nothing. I'd criticize the inconsistency but I honestly think it's within character.

Some of the smaller details were also quite interesting as well. I knew Uzuki and Kariya had the whole junior/senior dynamic going on, but I didn't actually think it was because Kariya had been working as a reaper for longer than her. I also enjoyed how Neku formed his pact with Joshua in this episode, even if I still prefer how they handled it in the game. You get more of a feeling that Joshua's a complete dickhead because of how he forms the pact without even asking Neku. I'd criticise the anime for being inaccurate in order to throw a bone to the yaoi crowd, but in all honesty, I'm kinda a part of the yaoi crowd. I hope we get to see more of the exchanges the two have in the future episodes because they're easily the most entertaining parts of the game to me.

I know I shouldn't be putting such an insignificant detail under a microscope, but since it's finally been acknowledged within the anime I've always wondered how stores are meant to work in this game's universe. Do players just pop into existence whenever they pass through the entrance? What happens if a player enters a store at the same time someone from the RG leaves it? I honestly doubt the part-timers of Japan are trained to expect people to materialise in front of them, or to clean the bloodied remains of someone who has been materialised into.

I'm so sorry for literally taking a week to post this!! I got distracted by a lot of things....... hopefully I won't be this late next episode...
Anyway, y'all know what time it is... for those who waited for Joshua and Sho to show up...

Yup, that's all, everyone knows both of them needed that obligatory "there he is", hope y'all are happy.

✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶ ⋆ ✶

Welcome to week 2 folks. As I'm sure you can tell from my earlier bit there (or just by looking at the characters' favorites lol), here we are introduced to two fan-favorite characters. As always, I'm lookin' forward to what y'all feel about the story (...that is, if they don't keep butchering it, but I think you all know that it's gonna happen sadly), but I'm also even more excited to see how you all feel about these characters in particular.

I still don't know how exactly to describe my feelings about the pacing and how the story is executed so far though. I do appreciate the work they've done on the fight scenes, but it honestly feels like there's no impact or real struggle in them and that Neku is just destroying anything without effort (even though he does visibly struggle in harder fights). Is it the lack of epic rock music (though the Day 2 fight with Taboo Noise had a bit of that at least)? Is it the pacing? Is it the shot compostition/presentation? I have no idea, but it just feels like nothing and that they really take away from the story by making it as an excuse to cut so much of the game's charm out. Maybe it's because I've played the game and therefore know what's going to happen unless the anime decides to pull a Promised Neverland S2 move and adapt in A New Day or something just to further piss me off, so the element of surprise might have not worked that well, but... I just feel like something about this show is kinda... average... and as I've said with the first episode, the odd pauses in between dialogue just make me feel like I'm watching Kingdom Hearts cutscenes again... great.......

Well, I don't remember this new "Player vs. Player. To the death." mission that zetta crazy mathematician pulls out of nowhere. Don't remember Neku trying to save the other Players like that, and I definitely don't remember seeing them fight each other either. Don't get me wrong, one of the things I really like about this adaptation so far is that certain characters got a bit more screentime and that we actually get to see more of the other Players; in that way, it really convinces you that there are others in this Shinigami's/Reaper's Game too and not just Neku. But I just feel like this brand new scene literally ONLY exists just so the anime has an excuse to show the audience that Neku has changed since week 1. And in all honesty, that kinda feels so fake to me, especially since the anime cuts out many of the little scenes from the game that actually SHOWED you him changing bit by bit and showing you that there's more to him than just being cynical rather than him SPELLING it out to the audience like over here. And like I said about the fight scenes, somehow it all feels like nothing and unimpactful. Gotta love when all nuance and subtlety and stuff needs to get thrown out of the window, amirite?? *sighs*

Also, half of this episode felt like a recap of the first week with all the flashbacks to previous episodes. Like I get some people are forgetful, but I mean, couldn't it just been fine for Neku to remember Beat and Rhyme without literally showing them when they get to THAT area? Oh now we get flashbacks lol? And NOW we see Reaper decals? What was so wrong with showing them earlier? Is it just so they could cut all of the "filler" just to get the main good parts? And why are we NOW getting Taboo Noise lol?

Okay, okay... I'll calm down lol... there's one thing I DID like.

Many of you Players might not realize this, but just before Neku and Joshua perform their Lv2 Fusion against the rhino Noise, they actually say their Lv2 Fusion lines in the original Japanese version of the game ("Come on, Neku" and "Try asking first") ! Very nice detail! I say "might not notice" because their Lv2 Fusion lines are different in the English release (still funny though) and not everyone will bother watching Japanese cutscenes/voice lines of the game.
The garbage heaps also look good and... oh wow, a brand new scene? It's cool to see Eri get more screentime and I kinda get what they were trying to do with this new flower shop scene, kinda-unnecessary flashback reminder and all... whoops, getting negative again hahaha...

...well, I should at least mention Neku's last flashback too.
Was seriously surprised to see actual blood this time, as the original game never shows any blood... I imagine the lack of that was probably the only reason why the game got rated A (CERO's equivalent of "E for Everyone" for those who are not aware) and not a B (equivalent of "T for Teen"), since some similar games I know had blood in it did get rated B... can't mention which ones cuz I don't want to spoil those games hahaha. Mentioning original game aside, yeah, those shots of Neku's dead eyes was a bit startling... in a good way, too.

Well, I sadly doubt I'll be impressed with this show anymore, but I'll see you all later today for next episode, I guess.
