Ooh, it's cool they actually took the journey to London.
There's a less sense of mystery but what surprised me is that Richard has a relative? He doesn't look him if you ask me lol
phantomfandom said: I hate when the show walk between the line of gay and straight, just fall into one side, and better if it's gay side!
Tbh the show cut A LOT of gay text from the novels thanks to the time constraints (probably), they are trying to put a whole volume in 2 eps lmao. If u arent afraid to click lol its mostly for the stuff that were cut from this ep
For instance in this case in the beginning seigi keeps mentioning how he dreams of richard almost kissing him, shaul asks him if he realizes he is in love with richard and the whole claremont family basically thinks richard and seigi are eloping in japan. there is a running joke in the novels that ppl keep mistaking them for a couple, im disappointed it was never shown tbh.
Huh, this episode actually adapted more than I expected... Episode 9 adapts Case 1, 2 and part of 3 of Volume 4, when I was only expecting 1 and 2 to be adapted for this episode. As expected, plenty of things were cut, so if you want to know more, scroll down :)
Okay, explanation for the receipts (Muse Asia didn't explain em, not sure if Crunchy is but anyway): the receipts are in Japanese, specifically from sweets shops in Japanese. You could take it as a coincidence until that last receipt - it's obvious that it's from Richard, just from the voiceover alone. But why the cloak and dagger? Well... wait for next episode~ (Also, since when is the British Museum so empty, this anime isn't realistic)
Hmm, I just realised they never stated in the episode, but in the novels this part is actually wintertime (reminder, Seigi and Richard first met in spring). How the heck did Seigi survive wearing a t-shirt at the start of the episode... Or not, since it seems like our buffoon is catching a cold. I thought idiots don't get sick? Looks like Seigi does have more than one functioning brain cell after all!

I wanted to contrast Seigi's reactions to Tanimoto last ep and Richard this episode.
Tanimoto: plans to get married to someone else
Seigi: I'm very sad but if she's happy I won't confess to her (and Richard has to prompt him to say something)
Richard: disappears without a word
Seigi: WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU RICHARD I WILL CHASE YOU DOWN IN ANOTHER COUNTRY EVEN IF I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE YOU ARE EXACTLY
Personally, I thought that his different reactions to both of them were very interesting. He likes Tanimoto, but he gets more worked up over his boss disappearing? Seigi, honey...

Screenshots for the episode (again, apologies for the Muse Asia watermark):
I was gonna make a joke about Richard being a weeaboo, but it turns out Jeffrey is the weeaboo.
(What the hell, animators?)
Richard: knows Japanese
Richard: has a dog named Taro
... That's it Richard was actually a weeaboo all along
I'm sorry please don't hit me

And for all of you who want to know novel spoilers, the stuff they cut out from this episode, press that shiny button right there~
Before we begin, I'll like to preface by saying that I translated all the following myself from a Chinese translation of Volume 4 - I cannot read Japanese. So, please do not take the following translations as gospel. They're mainly for people who can't read Japanese to know more about the novel details. If accuracy is deal-breaking for you, please don't read further.
Also, for those who are wondering, are the novels gayer? The answer is the novels are gayer... But also, Seigi says he likes Tanimoto more in the novels as well, so us novel readers (and novel spoiler readers) are just calling him a confused disaster bi right now.

1. Apart from thinking that all the blonde dudes on the street are Richard, Seigi also dreams of him, specifically, that Richard was going to kiss him. Really. Though he calls them nightmares, haha. And a minor volume 5 spoiler that I don't think will be adapted: Seigi later says to Shaul that he loves Richard like a brother... Uh, Seigi, I'm questioning your morals if you're dreaming of kissing your brother. And I know I'm basically opening myself up to incest jokes now
2. When Shaul and Seigi were in Etranger and Shaul was asking him why do you want to know where Richard is, he directly questioned Seigi if he was aware he was in love with Richard. This promptly sends Seigi into Gay Panic Mode, and his thoughts keep going -no way I don't love Richard in that way do I no I love Tanimoto-
3. The cup scene: when Shaul was making the tea, he was gonna take out the cups Seigi and Richard used (when no customers were there), but Seigi hurriedly took out the cups they used for guests instead.
4. There's a chunk they cut out from this episode. In Etranger, Shaul shows Seigi a ring with 6 gems, and asks Seigi if he knows the significance - he doesn't. He then asks Seigi to identify the gems, and Seigi only manages to identify 5 of them. Later, with Tanimoto's help, he figures out the last gem when he realises that the first letters of the gems are supposed to make up a word. The word? Richard. I can see why they cut it though because this isn't very important or crucial to the plot.
5. I loved the conversation Jeffrey had with Seigi, I'm sad they cut it :( Seigi was like "I know it's dumb to go UK when I don't even know where Richard is but I can't help it", and Jeffrey was relieved because he thought Seigi was going to elope with Richard lol
These are all summarised versions of the actual scenes, of course. If you want to read more exact translation, I do have an expanded translation here, but it's not complete yet, I might throw in more translations later. I won't be translating the whole ring thing though (point 3 above), it's too long. Link to original Chinese translations included as well - you can use Google translate to read them, it's surprisingly okay.
I've also got a few people asking me about the ages of the boys for some reason, and since it's actually covered in this volume (but I didn't include in the doc), I'm dropping them here in case we don't get it next episode. So, Seigi is 20, and this volume we learn that Richard is 28.

I'm so sad they cut the running joke, it's honestly one of my favorite things from the novels. But
They're not eloping in Japan, they're eloping in England - at least, that's what the family thinks.
Thx for providing what was cut out from the anime and providing a link to your ongoing translation of vol. 4 of the novel. I've been keeping tracks of all the novel spoilers on the JR discord, yet you have to scroll through hundreds of comments, which isn't easy for newcomers to catch up on everything.
The translations are kinda scattered about across the JR discord, twitter, tumblr, some Google dos; it's hard to keep track xD.
I found a link to a Chinese site that has a lot of translations, but you have to rely on Google translate which surprisingly isn't too bad looking? I have no way of knowing how botched Google translates the Chinese text, but it's better than nothing I guess.

I clearly have too much time on my hand, haha. It's really scattered yeah, but gotta do what you gotta do. And yes, google translation was surprisingly good with it actually! I used it to check quality and it's surprisingly readable. Much better than using it with the original Japanese, which just makes no sense.
HONESTLY I partially translated vol 4 because Seigi's gay panic was just too hilarious to read AND I had the feeling they would leave the scenes out of the anime... which they did.
The suspense is unreal each episode waiting for Seigi to do something cringe, but I keep watching for the tiny chance it's Actually Gay, because they're such a great couple.
Seigi settled his feelings somewhat thanks to Tanimoto's help, and he decided that he wants to be there for Richard. After all, he can make him a delicious pudding, and royal milk tea, if nothing else. And it turns out Richard's situation is indeed complicated. He has the claim to that diamond, which is worth a big fortune, but he has to marry someone he doesn't love in order to inherit it. Of course he doesn't want it, but his family does, and it seems they don't really care about him at all. I mean, his uncle raised him after his divorced, but not dead? Parents abandoned(?) him, but now they go as far as interfering with his love life in order to have the money. And he feels indebted to his uncle too, which is understandable to be honest, but it doesn't mean that he has to do whatever he says. But I will wait to know them better before forming an opinion. I love that they saw Seigi as Richard's next chosen one and even investigated if they were living together. xD But I hope Seigi isn't in danger because of it. I don't know if the first one accepted the money or not before breaking up, but Seigi would never. Can't wait to see their reunion.
With Richard missing and on his way to London, and the former shop taken charge by his mentor, Seigi is at a standstill.
But Seigi man...liking Tanimoto and secretly loving Richard are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. In the end of the pursuit, he adores Richard to the max, and finding him is of utmost importance. The gayness is showing immeasurably.
The full picture of Richard's backstory is known to Seigi, but not the intricate details that his mentor filled him with. As always, he'd steeled his resolve to find Richard, but taking the place through to London.
Meeting his brother Jeffrey (or rather being followed) in London, more cracks on Richard's family life surfaced, linking family hatred to the gemstones encountered. And what the heck, a 118-carat diamond? That's too much of a risk to take, but the consequences are just as ridiculous.
Even with all that, those sweet shop receipts in Japanese...is it mere coincidence that this was intentional for Seigi to find Richard, and who helped him with that is still a mystery.
Regardless, what an episode. I just wish that Seigi would find Richard fast to elope together.
welp the Tanimoto ship has sunk lol. tfw Seigi spent all of last episode preventing her to get married only to confess to her as a friend. Either that or Tanimoto inadvertently friendzoned him with the lacklustre response
and hey another marriage. Ain't gonna get fooled for like the 5th time now to know that it's gonna fail
It seems dousei-suru is the Japanese word for living together. Dousei also means same-sex, so I thought the brother was referring to a possibility of homosexual love between the male leads.
This is so gay that I want it to be completely gay! Seigi bloody flew to another country to meet Richard!!
I really wish the characters blinked more. Eye lid movements can make characters feel quite alive.
So Seigi traveled to London to find Richard, but instead he runs into his cousin. It seems like Richard is the heir to very complicated family that allows him the potential to inherit a very expensive diamond.
Inheritance with dealing large amounts of money is always trouble and a big mess! humans are greedy being indeed.
hopefully, i wish Richard would pull this off and Seigi stay loyal to him, a true friend without any money blinding antics...
5/5.
I agree with Richard's cousing tbh. He should have just married someone and then divorce once the problem was solved. Because of him the whole family is suffering.
Quite a lot information on Richard this episode, I really am starting to doubt if Richard and Seigi are going to be a gay couple at the end because the show really keeps switching sides from gay to straight which kind of annoys me
