About 8 months. They arrived in March at the story's start and Ash turned 18 that August 12th. Now Arthur died on Nov 1st and Ash has been in the hospital/held captive since. I have been trying to break down this new 2010s timeline myself since the original story starts in March 1985 (12 years after Griffin and Max were in Vietnam in 1973).

Thank you for clearing it up, I somehow thought they arrived in summer and was wondering why they were wearing coats in July!

Oh that's interesting, I was thinking about the time intervals and how the passage of it occurs in the series. Is there an officially updated date and time the characters were in each scenario with the anime or is it currently based on conjecture?

There is an official timeline in the Official Banana Fish Guidebook Rebirth. It is being re-released in 2 weeks.

For the things it does not outright state, one can easily piece together the time of certain events. It's mentioned it was March 4th very early on in the manga (which was not in the anime) at the start. Eiji and Ibe come to NYC a few days later. Ash was in a hospital for an unknown period and then went to prison for an undetermined amount of time shortly after. Ash's birthday while known in supplementary material is not outright shown in the manga nor anime. Yet, when he interacts with the police again, they tell him it's different now that he's no longer a minor (so he's already turned 18). Then there is the fact that Halloween is always on October 31st in America and we see Ash, Eiji, Kong and Bones celebrate it the night before Arthur dies. So in some cases where the passage of time is not explicitly stated, it's still easy to figure out. I just can't figure when in the 2010s the anime takes place because the Iraq War may have supposedly started in 2003, and lasted for years despite Max mentioning he learned about Banana Fish experiments dating from 2005-2007 in the anime (he says he spent 10 years investigating it after Griffin went mad in Iraq). I would assume the same amount of time that went by in the manga is the same for the anime albeit taking place in a different era.

Here's the first couple pages of the timeline which shows the manga (not the epilogue) takes place from 1985-1987.

I did not post the rest because they contain MASSIVE SPOILERS and I KNOW some people on here can't help themselves but click. So Google at your own risk.

Why that is very helpful thank you, may I ask where you first heard of the re-release of the Rebirth guidebook? I think I'll get that, there's DVDs coming out soon as well. And yes I will join you in advising people NOT to Google the story since you cannot predict anything in this plot and there are some very honed and refined ambush spoilers just waiting to get you!

Nice one, thanks!

Turning back to episode 15, have to say how interesting it was with the health facility and FBI linked to the Corsican mafia, that was a good development plot wise.

Damn, that mental institute is really fuck up. I'm not gonna say I feel bad for seeing criminals acting like zombies due to someone experimenting on them but it's still a bit worrying that something like this might actually happen somewhere.

That aside, I liked this episode. So, it actually didn't take that long for everybody to know that Ash wasn't dead and in the end, he managed to escape for his own.. well, and with the help of a random dumb/horny guard.

P.S.: That guard was convinced way easier than I thought... well, I suppose the curiosity ended up killing the cat...

I can’t believe the security guard could be that stupid. Wasn’t he told this kid had a 200+ IQ? But tbh even if he wasn’t why would you put your previous “candy bar” anywhere close to someone held captive? All he’d have to do is bite that shit off. What an idiot.

My gripe with that scene is that 50% man on this seem to be gay or something, like wtf!
Really, the guard too?!?!

While in the mental health institution, Ash becomes nothing but a lab rat. The doctor there wanted to use Banana Fish on Ash since Ash has such high intelligence. Everyone in that place has become a victim to that drug.

Eiji and Sing have a chat. Looks like Sing finally got the truth about what happened to Shorter. At least he shouldn’t have a reason to blame Ash now.

Lmao at Ash’s little “performance”
That security guard was pretty dumb if he thought Ash was gonna do him any favors. Now all Ash has to do is escape. Let’s see how that goes.

Well, that is something I at least can laugh at.
Wasnt this episode the one where you had a medical doctor thinking Ash cosplaying as a nurse was HOT?!
I m curious how much of this is product of the adaptation, and how much is really from the manga...

It's from the manga but the anime cut a few corners and left out some details. Like that guard telling the others he was going on patrol but then deciding to say in Ash's room.

FBI and now CIA, this case have gone bigger than I expected, I won't be surprised if an even more secretive agency is revealed.
Papa Dino must have some severe manifestation of the Amadeus syndrome, he must love poor Ash so much that he finds himself hating him, you can't tell me all of that, and he never was in good terms with killing him off, there is something greater there.
One thing I can't quick put my finger on yet, just how horney are all of those people? That much quickly to tempt over something while being on such a high and responsible position, wow, just wow.

Everyone is talking about the candy bar scene, but how in the world did they find a corpse that looked THAT similar to Ash? I gotta call BS on that, sorry.

The manga had better details on the institute not wanting the police in there or they would notice something odd about the corpse and be able to tell it wasn't Ash. The anime had a throw away line just barely mentioning it. My guess is it was a kid that looked close enough to Ash but if you gpt a good look at his face then you could tell it wasn't him. Could have been a blue eyed kid. Someone with dyed blond hair. Never specified but not important enough to need specific details like that.

Some episodes make me wonder, "How is this a shoujo?"

And then something like Ash's candy bar scene happens and I'm snapped back to reality.

The candy bar scene was really surprising. But what I like about this episode is when Sing helped Eiji.

I'm ashamed to have thought that Eiji would just despair with the news of Ash's supposed death, but he was fast to act, and got his freedom, even though it wasn't really smart because he didn't have a plan of action, and needed to be saved by Sing later, but it was still great. And poor Yut-Lung! He has a similar background to Ash, but he doesn't have someone like Eiji, and his presence evokes those feelings in him, I don't want to see him fighting Ash, but I guess it's truly inevitable. Sing truly cares about Yut-Lung though, I wonder if Eiji told him the truth about Shorter's death.

And Max was so brave! Facing Dino, and saying that he was the one that published that news, and stuff, I love him! But what's the deal with Dino? He's a despicable, disgusting, unforgivable fiend who doesn't deserve anything but pain, and death for ruining, and scarring the life of many, but it seems he's losing power now that his accomplices can go through with their project without him, and he didn't try to prevent Max, and Ibe from trying to rescue Ash. I mean, he's finally being more fleshed out, but I still feel kind of mad with this.

These two things are also what I'd like to point from the episode. Interesting, really, especially with the Dino part. I believe he still has a creepy attachment with Ash and wouldn't want such a lab rat kind of death for him. Not to mention as a mafia boss he wants to have his way, so it ain't gonna be interesting if Ash died there without any fights with him.

Lol not a big fan of the candy bar scene but damn bravo to yuuma uchida still

Eiji and Yut Lung's dynamic is one of my favorites in the series. Imo they both really shine in it. It reveals Yut Lung's envy, frustration, and insecurities, while Wiji finally has an "opposing party" taking him seriously and challenging his beliefs. I love their confrontations.

Eiji and Sing finally get acquainted!! I love these good bois, it looks like Eiji's finally gonna tell Sing the truth about Shorter

Idk how I feel about these villains... Arthur was easy to hate, and Golzine has been problematic in the past, but he has his moments. Yut Lung is a sassy queen though, so even when I hate him, I can’t really hate him.

Ash's escape relied on that guard being both gay (or maybe the power of the candybar turned him gay right then and there), and dumb asf. However it makes for the best scene in the show thus far, so it's 100% worth it.

That guard fell for the oldest trick in the book. Not quite maximum security when only one guard checks him out and he is ridiculously armed on top of that.
Guards securing prisoners should never be armed, since firearms could be used against them. That includes prison guards; none of them is armed on purpose.
