This episode is a basic introduction to the world of Land of the Lustrous and its characters.

The main focus of this episode is Phosphophyllite or short Phos, who is one of the most fragile out of 28 gems, that are living, scoring just 3.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. What I mean with low hardness is basically how durable they are in battles, because their body is made out of rock and can break easily. But if they break they can easily put back together if you can find their prices. They are immortal, but only if you have their parts to repair them. ( like a vase that was broken and you have all pieces to build the whole vase again ;) ).And they need sunlight to function as a living gem. Like a flower that also needs light to survive and in the night the gems basically sleep. Also, the gems are made and have no gender because they can reproduce nor have genitals. (That part will be more explained in the Anime)

Despite Phos physical limitation, wants to go out and fight the Lunarians (basically the Buddhist looking creatures that come out of the sky and want to turn them into a weapon or into jewelry), but the Sensei wants to find a better job for Phos. Instead, The Sensei orders Phos to compile a natural history of the world, a task Phos finds really boring (its basically describing and analyzing new things, like plants and microorganism).

Phos tries to find some of their gems to help to complete the task because Phos has no clue how to do it. And Phos tries to find someone until Rutile (the gem doctor in a lab coat) tells to talk to Cinnabar. Cinnabar is a special gem that does not only have the lowest durability but can potentially kill the gems with the poison. The poison is basically silver and if it touches the gems, the silver will harden and the gems can no longer absorb light, which for them is really bad. Not only could the poison kill them but also the parts should be scrapped from their bodies, which could lead them to lose their memory.

On the other side, Cinnabar is really smart and cable of fighting. The only problem that Cinnabar cannot fully control her power (this is why the scene when she puked looked like she had problems controlling the poison). Cinnabar is isolating from other gems and also begging to be taken to the moon by the Lunarians because the only useful thing Cinnabar can do is night duties. And on the night nothing ever happens.

On the other side, Phos does not want Cinnabar to commit basically suicide. Phos wants to help Cinnabar to find a more suitable task. Basically, both are the same. Phos and Cinnabar are outcasts that want to find a place in the community. Phos is weak and Cinnabar can potentially kill other gems unintentional.

This is basically the first episode. =) Also the world in there they living is a small island surrounded by ocean and in the ocean, there is also a different species living. You will wait and see what I mean by it ;)

The poison is mercury (also known as quicksilver). The chemical composition of cinnabar is HgS, mercury sulfide. Refining cinnabar has long been the main source of elemental mercury. It's interesting that one of the effects of the poison is the loss of memories, since mercury exposure causes neurological damage.

It had Nakata Jouji as one of the characters, but otherwise it didn't grab my attention in any way.

Such an incomplete anime, is this how they sell it nowadays? Hopefully the manga clears everything up.
