I have a feeling that this show will not be popular, or by any means mainstream, but will be one of those shows that to the ones who watch it, is amazing. The difference between the cute moe blog art of the characters with their environment and the theme of the series makes me think that there will be a lot of depth. (I hope its as amazing as I think it will be.)

Judging by the other pre-release threads, it's already attracting people who think it's like Made in Abyss, and if that's the only kind of show they'll accept, then they'll be disappointed. Meanwhile, I'm concerned that others who'd actually like it will not give it a chance, because it sounds like it could be a grimdark edgefest. I read the manga just to make sure it wasn't that.

But it does have depth - in particular, exploration of characters' raison d'être has been a recurring theme in the manga that's been translated so far.

I read the manga expecting something like made in abyss. It wasn't dark except a few undertones and i didn't get as emotional as when i read made in abyss but i wasn't disappointed either because it's pretty nice to read and some backgrounds are absolutely stunning. I'd say it's a pretty good manga to get into the iyashikei (is it written like that?) genre.

@Savajho Glad to hear that :) I think most people, like you, aren't so specific in what they want.

Sometimes incorrect expectations may damage the experience for people who would have otherwise enjoyed a show, for example "Listening to what people have to say about Made in Abyss ruined the show for Digi and Nate" (anime spoilers for MIA) https://www.reddit.com/r/Digibro/comments/6vrf5a/listening_to_what_people_have_to_say_about_made/

What would you say is a show that it's most similar to?

@bibi-fan According to this post by Nexxkinn, it's most similar to the manga Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, which I haven't read. It has a couple of OVA adaptations but no full series. https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1636003&show=0#msg52260022

I compared/contrasted it to Kino's Journey and Sora no Woto here: https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1649224&show=0#msg52212037

It's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer.

And I will definitely read that manga :)

I thought of something else that feels similar - Aria season 1 episode 4, "That Undeliverable Letter."

No lie, the first time I opened up this one while looking through next season's anime, I think it became a potential favorite. And then after reading YKK, doubly sure of it now.

I can see how this can be an underdog though, especially considering how a lot of sequels for established shows are premiering this season. Plus, not sure if everyone is a fan of the whole seemingly depressing premise.
Meh... It takes effort to make a good signature...

They add a bit of flashback there, I wonder if they have that in the manga, I've only read until the translated chapter(25).

Great OST BTW.

No.

The world setting is simple-The world is all but used up,civilization is dead, the little knowledge survivors have of the past is dying out.

The focus is on how two girls go about their daily life. Do not watch this expecting "action" or for a tearjerker..

Again seriously the story is a character driven slice of life show, of two girls motoring along on their kettenkrad.

How is it that after post #3 in this thread says it's not like Made in Abyss, two people say it looks like Made in Abyss...? :D I'm just kinda... baffled, y'know?

If in the vaguest sense you mean cute characters + grim world, then yeah, it is surface-comparable, I guess. But having no big quest and no suffering sets it miles apart, IMO.

Maybe those similarities already bring the shows together a lot for them. After all maybe the used the logic that it was much more like made in the abyss than your typical shonen shoujo show, Maybe they didn't read what was above them

I love post-apocalictic settings, so this was on the watch list from the start. The key visuals were amazing and the ost sounds promising. Not sure about the chara design, although I learned to live with a somewhat similar one (Made in Abyss); so it won't affect my enjoyement of the anime. Really looking forward to this one.

@bibi-fan Right, well, if that's all they're looking for then I guess they'll like it :) Same with Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau, you got your interesting fantasy world:

https://myanimelist.net/anime/34712/Kujira_no_Kora_wa_Sajou_ni_Utau

Maybe I've been unintentionally making SSR sound esoteric, when it's really not. I think most people would like it, given a chance.

Shōjo Shūmatsu Ryokō/ Girls' Last Tour if compared to an anime...K-ON! .

Take Yui give her a rifle add a ravenous appetite and you have Yuuri.

Take Azusa give her the skill of a tinker add a need to know/discover and you have Chito.

Ch 39's big arc-Chito converts the kettenkrad into a hot tub,so the girls can have a nice soak till they get around to fixing the track.

Again this is a character driven slice of life story, the "twist' is the girls living in a post, post apocalyptic setting (I added the 2nd post on purpose).

I can't see any comedy here. I sense a Kino's Journey vibe here, hence why I think it has potential to be so great. The comedy needs to be waaaaay to perfect and appropriate to add something to the show.

Yeah, there's some comedy but only when appropriate, no Spider-Man Homecoming obligatory gags that detract from serious moments. (At least, not that I remember.)

I'm watching both... the original Kino LN has had many more volumes written since 2003, so the new show will be mostly new content. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2017-09-11/interview-keiichi-sigsawa/.121076

I had never heard of kino no Tabi until this season, I'm excited that another show that I'm watching is similar. I guess I'll see on the forums for that show too! (there are so many good shows this season, and its actually the busiest I've ever been so I dont know how i will keep up.)

Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou is at its heart two girls interacting with each other as they stave off despair-Covered by their happy go lucky, slice of life antics.

Unless things have changed drastically past chapter 39 (as far as I've read) the story's setting is centered in and about the ruined city/industrial complex.

Really lost on the Kino no Tabi comparison.

This is more of a comfy adventure than a dark fantasy but i see why people compare MIA and Girl's Last Tour ( at least when it come to style ).
Storywise it's much more like Yokohama than anything .

I feel like this is gonna be a sleeper hit and will gain the recognition it deserves later once the dab hype settles down and people start looking at it for what it is rather than what they were expecting.

Nah, that will be quite a miracle if this show can ever get a lot of attention.
The thing is: if you don't know about the various philosophies in this, or if you can't "read behind the dialogue/plot" out of inability or out of a certain belief, or if you're someone who thinks an active, obvious big "main plot" is everything, then this show offers you nothing but cute girls exploring the world (and Minase Inori & Yurika Kubo conversing for 20+ minutes, which is no different then a radio show.)
CGDCT or its variant aren't really a mainstream thing, these days.
I mean: CGDCT genre are mainstream due to constant viewers, but in matters of reception and total amount of people watching it in the end, it's not.

Me? I'm happy if I can get one more person to watch and enjoy this masterpiece.

Girls und Kettenkrad is so much of a seasonal underdog that they already removed it from the MAL frontpage's Fall 2017 Anime roll-film scroll bar! For example IsIi is still there, Just Because! is still there, Ancient Ride, 10cm, etc. and even Violent Evergarden is there despite not being started yet. SSR is gone however and probably not by mistake?

It would of been a strong underdog contender, if they had no dropped the ball on the setting's treatment. I get it's about the emotional journey between the two protagonist rather then exploration but that's no excuses for the bland color palette or the fact almost the entire set looked like newly constructed city project instead of the ruins of humanity. Shame, the lack of importance given to the setting really tanked the show for me.

Almost fell asleep. As interesting as the dialogue and jokes were they were far to few inbetween for them not to have something else hold the viewers attention.
