Story:
Not a main focus of mine. I firmly believe in anime requiring good visuals to be a good anime. Otherwise anime functions less as a visual product and more as an audio one. General rule is that if plot either cannot be told without animation or enhances the animation greatly, it scores high. 6-10: Must have some bigger implication outside of generic plot, from the very basic conflict relation to the most pretentious of philosophies or historical interpretations. At the moment, Fukushima/Lost Decade gets a bonus point. Subversion is easiest point deducer if not done well. 1-5: Either bland as fuck plot or actually acts to offend. Not in like Nazi style offend, more like makes me feel like I wasted my life on an anime. Weak attempts at 6-10 qualities can easily bump a show to this level. And although friendship/camaraderie/love/depression etc are overused, they don't penalize. Rape outside of porn is a point deduction, not due to offensiveness, more due to weakness as a plot device.
Art:
Anime is a visual medium, and animation is the illusion of life (see the Disney book by the same name). Therefore, it must be strong in the 12 principles of animation and how often it uses it. I can now sort of understand spoken moonrunes now, so all anime is being watched without subs, putting more focus on the animated appeal. Cinematography is also important to this category, although my sphere of knowledge is still lacking with regards to cinematography. Finally, visual appeal alone cannot improve this category beyond one point. 6-10: Must be well animated. Deviations from limited animation generally apply, although creative use of limited animation outside of being a cost saver (comedy for example) gets a bonus (hi Trigger). Also, any kind of experimental animation/cinematography automatically gets a point, even if used badly, to a point. Sakuga rarely will provide extra points, unless the show itself is heavy on sakuga and doesn't use it as a crutch or attention. 3D done right provides instant point. 1-5: Either standard anime limited animation or worse. I'm not watching an anime to see it all just be still images of people with three mouth shapes. Also, bad attempts at sakuga or a disproportionate amount of sakuga to nothingness hurts score, sometimes majorly. Finally, bad 3D cg automatically puts it in this category, no matter how well the other aspects of animation are obeyed.
Sound:
A mix of music and foley. OP/ED not weighted heavily, even if it is a good OP/ED. Those scores go more towards the Art category. Only if song thematically fits OP/ED really well is when it gets a bonus. Beautiful foley, soundtrack and VA all contribute to this score, although I am less audibly literate than others out there. 6-10: Music adds its own dimension to the work. Mix of experimental sound design (still looking for that...) and audio storytelling is important to this category. Voice acting can vary, from good dramatized voice to experimental voice acting (in my mind casual voice counts sometimes as experimental). OP/ED counted as a single point, two in specific situations. 1-5: Music detracts from the work itself, either being too intrusive to the visual storytelling of the work or by setting an inappropriate mood. OP/ED does not fit anime, even in a contrasting sense, or is just a generic J-rock song. Voice acting is uninspired and boring.
Character:
Eh, ties in too much with Story and Sound. Not accounted for in final score as own category. A score and blurb is given only to explain final score given.
Enjoyment:
See Enjoyment scale, is the surface score given.
Overall:
5 points on Art (3 Animation, 1 Cinematography, 1 Appeal)
2 points on Story
2 points on Sound (1 Music and Foley, 1 Character)
1 point on Enjoyment (can be replaced with any of the others, especially with experimentation)
