In search for an anime that can rival the great production quality of Attack on Titan, Psycho Pass, Erased, Steins;Gate. I often hear that Evangelion was one of the best.
I plan on watching the 2007 movies instead of the 1997 animation.

Is it worth it?

Don't listen to this person.

Watch it because it's a timeless classic. Maybe you will love the show or maybe you will despise it but that anime was and is still the most groundbreaking anime of all time.

Its the only good mecha anime

I would rather watch a mecha shounen or read a psychology book. Your choice

Oshii is probably the only director that loves dogs. He thinks he's a dog himself.

That's right, its slime! It will dissolve your clothing slowly before my eyes!

But seriously, that anime isn't even that deep. If you want real mindfuck then Paprika beats by a mile. However, EoE was pretty disgusting.

As for the mecha aspect, other than being a deconstruction of that genre, this anime has a pretty mediocre mecha action.

Yeah, NGE was famous because its effect on the transition of japan anime genre in late 20 century. the anime is "a timeless disgrace" compared to another anime released around these year.

The 2007 movie is part of the rebuilds which follow a alternate timeline. For good o'l evan-gelion you'll need to either watch neon genesis (tv series), or death & rebirth (recap movie of nge). If you just want to experience evangelion as fast as possible watch death & rebirth. However, in my opinion d&r was trash compared to nge and end of nge.

Paprika's main plot is pretty simple, the shots and transitions are indeed mindfucky

@Cabron NGE is one of mecha anime that show us that mecha isn't all about robot-battling or human use robot (or machine) to fight each other. robot has a soul and not just a tool to killing enemy. it explore the bond between human conscience and their robot (or machine) soul.

what I want to say is, NGE isn't the ONLY anime that deconstructing mecha but its ONE OF MANY anime that deconstructing mecha, another anime such as Ghost In The Shell explore the similar aspect too. And, IMO, GITS is better in term deconstructing of mecha anime than NGE.

That's not necessarily "deconstructing".
Even then, previous works already had what you mentioned.
Anno just took what he grew up watching and ramped it up to 11.

so what is "deconstruction" in your version?
just like I said before, NGE isn't THE ONLY ONE but ONE OF MANY.

It completely changed the anime industry, showing that it could appeal to an adult audience, and many animes of today wouldn't be the same without Evangelion. I believe it's no doubt the most groundbreaking anime ever, and it's pretty in arguable that it's up there.

im not sure about "many anime of today wouldn't be the same without Evangelion" part. an example, NGE isn't the root of growing moe culture that become one of distinct feature of anime today.

The original series is definitely not for everyone, but it's something I feel everyone needs to see nonetheless due to its legacy and place within the medium of anime. Most end up either loving or hating it. The former was the case for me and I grow more appreciative of it with each rewatch.

As for the more recent films, they lack what made the original a masterpiece but are highly entertaining action films in their own right. I'd recommend watching both series and would personally recommend checking out the original first.

The anime itself is good but the mc is wimp crybaby. You will notice that from the very first episode, if you can bare him then you should watch it.

That's what I would rate it, "Good, Pretty good."
There are so many NGE memes that it becomes held up as this great standard, and going into it with that mindset, it felt a little overrated. It's definitely interesting enough once the ball gets rolling, and worth watching like others said, because it's a classic. Everything from the mechs to the antagonists had an element of mysteriousness to them, which I enjoyed.
As for the main character, his personality can be annoying, but I've seen much worse. At least there's some development in his case, and you do like him when he's acting normal.
Long story short, it's good enough to check off your list, but it's not the first thing you'd catch me recommending people.

Well, I've seen 3/4 of the anime you used as example and in my opinion NGE is leaps and bounds ahead of those 3.

That being said, not everyone will enjoy NGE.
