This was a pretty fun time. The thing that stands out about this movie was certainly the animation, the actions scenes had some really great animation, Stuff like Rikimaru running away from the missile before kicking it away, or like the whole fight against mecha, and parts of the Michael Commando fights still look great by today's standards I think.
In terms of the story, that's certainly the weakest part. There's stuff I like about it, like the reveal about the flowers having poisonous spores at the end to explain why the dragons death leads to the villagers death. The theory that they just die without the dragons on their own sounded like bs, but so I appreciated that little reveal that the flowers Pochi were eating was actually the cause. Otherwise this is fairly standard bog. Not ineffective, I did feel for Pochi when she was getting attacked. The splatter of blood after the first whip or her tears before she started to leave did make me a bit emotional. I didn't cry but I still feel like a wimp for how sad I got.
On character front, the movie was a bit mixed. Tanuki was fine by the end but didn't really care for her for most of the movie. Pretty much all the other supporting characters (sans Pochi) I outright disliked. Main villain is super cookie cutter and bland, and it seems that Michael Commando might've had some fun gimmick, with how much he shined his shoes or clipped his nail, seemed like he'd have some vanity gimmick, where he was like really concerned about his look. And there's a bit of that with him fixing his hair, but they never really do anything with it. Like I'm glad it's there because at least it's something but it was a bit disappointing that it never really contributed to anything. And Sanpei being the old pervert gimmick was rather annoying, I hated him the most, I'm very glad his screentime was limited.
But on the other hand, I really liked Kosuke & Rikimaru as leads. Their dynamic was rather wholesome and charming. The scenes discussing the bicycle where Kosuke starts as the concerned brother but ends up getting really sucked into Rikimaru's story, or their supportive wood crafting section made them quite endearing. Quite frankly, my favourite part of the movie was just watching how the two would navigate their environment. The sort of Rube Goldberg mechanism they have with the boulders to travel up the Dragon's Mountain was really fun to watch. And I love how they handled Tanuki's bicycle gift (side-note: wtf was she thinking with that bike?), their unique method of using the bike tag team style brought a nice smile to my face. Using her belt to hold the stone in place was also a nice closing moment, though more obvious.
This is sort of borderline between a 6 & 7 but I'm going with a 7. I think the animation & choreography for the action sequences sort of make up for the basic story, like the focus is more on these sequences than a deep plot, which isn't my preference but I think for a 40-minute short it works, especially when the animation is really good and like I said, the Pochi thing did get me so it's not completely vacant. And that might've only got like two characters right but those characters were the leads. I might change my mind but I'm going with a 7 for now. |
