Gon vs Hisoka finally! I realy don't believe that Gon stand any chance against Hisoka, 'cos their ability levels are way too different. But... this anime more and more resembles Dragonball, and Gon is just like Goku - have much potential and willpower so i guess everything is possible.

Well, I don't think Gon will win...unless Hisoka forfeits (as he has been known to do), but Gon did manage to do what he set out to do: punch Hisoka in the face and return his badge.

I think Gon wasn't planning to win from the beginning just to punch him and give the badge back~ The fight was still awsome :DD

Great episode. I doubt Gon will win but I can see the match being a close fight and hopefully Hisoka will go batshit crazy again.

That was definitely a good episode. Still have to admit I'm a little tired of everything coming naturally to Gon, though. He mastered "Gyo" in one night? Come on...

Maybe I cheer too much for the underdogs, like Zushi. But I even prefer Hisoka as a character, heh. Just that much more interesting, and a very intriguing villain.

Jeez! Didn't the master give an explanation for that. Besides, it also came naturally to Killua as well. As far as I'm concerned Gon gets beat up so often in this anime that I can't really think of him getting an easy pass. That's what I love about this anime. Gon is not miraculously defeating people. He's not given a win. I was quite impressed when he got so badly beaten by Hanzo because there was no miraculous win. That's one of the reasons why I like this anime. With him fighting Hisako, I expect a definite loss but at least it will give Gon more experience.

i'm surprised nobody has yet to mention the similarities with the rivalries of gon and hisoka and yusuke and toguro. they are very similar. yusuke was no where near toguro and had to train to beat him, while toguro waited for him to get stronger, knowing about his potential. same thing with gon and hisoka. I believe Togashi was definitely inspired from his previous series

Hmmm, I really don't like how fast those two are learning Nen. The exam took 30 episodes but this arc seems to be rushing by way too fast. :\

I like the 6 Nen categories though, makes me wonder what I'd be!

No wonder people "enjoyed" this arc way more in this version, just by the way it was structured & paced a bit faster...

Not a fan of the way they did it myself. I think Madhouse improved this arc a lot in the 2011 version.

Dat buttslap from Killua tho.

A bit disappointed how they skipped over the fight with Kastro completely. I hope they get back to it later, but I've already seen it in the remake so I'm not going to complain if it doesn't happen. I'm surprised by how much got skipped over in this version and so I'm extremely grateful to HxH 2011 for taking its time to focus on those things.

Hisoka vs Gon looks really good so far but once again the remake spoiled me silly with this match so it's going to feel like a bit of an underwhelming recap. It was so satisfying to see that pay back punch again though.

It's interesting how different nen types are depicted with different colors. Transmuters = purple, enhancers = gold, manipulators = green, (conjuror)??? = blue.

Don't miss rewatching Kastro but it's an odd+abrupt choice to skip it over. Wonder how it was depicted in the manga. Same with the Gyro rematch.

Gon vs. Hisoka match needs more perv.

Awesome closure to the Gon vs Hisoka storyline. What will Gon's next mission be? Will he finally start searching for his father?

Why would you completely skip over the match between Kastro and Hisoka when you gave a 10-minute introduction to Kastro last episode ?
That's also the match where Hisoka's Nen gets explained... But no, better use our resources for those 5 filler episodes earlier in the show.

It took me a few seconds to realize that guy with a bathrobe was Hisoka with no makeup and his hair down! He looks way better! (no homo)

There're even MORE variations of nen! I can't even begin to imagine the opponents with these other nen types out there...

Best fight so far... The fight is top quality back when this ep was made in 2000.
The moves Gon did were also awesome. Just epic all around!

I didn't expect Gon vs. Hisoka to start this early... I guess I've forgotten some stuff by time. While it's nicely animated and well done, compared to the 2011 version it feels very lackluster. An amazing episode nonetheless!

^ I completely forgot about this. That's a very good point to bring up when no one else has. I guess I fall in with the non-intellectuals who didn't pick up on this. And I'm impressed this user brought this issue to light.

The fight scene between Gon and Hisaka was amazing, and the musical score to complement it was great.
Also, for once a flashback was actually warranted. It was good seeing the face punch again to highlight the purpose of the match.

And Gon landing a punch on Hisaka was incredible. Faking him out, lifting the tile up, distracting him, and catching him behind really demonstrates what a critical thinker Gon is. The little vibrations used to demonstrate the power behind the punch was great — you could feel it impacting with Hisaka’s cheat.

What was fueling Gon was Hisaka’s condition that the favor will have been returned after he can land a punch on him. And shabang, the rigorous training paid off.

And as of now, I have no idea why Hisaka would be rooting for Gon, but he genuinely smiled at Gon’s little victory there. After all the stupid “Nen” briefings, it was good to see HxH return to the plot, and for Gon to reach his goal of “being able to” return the badge.

Side note, it’s been two months since I’ve watched HxH. Life has gotten busy for me and for once I’ve found it difficult to watch anime. It’s great being able to come back to this series. And damn I forgot how insanely aesthetic it is. I’ve never seen a show with a design like this. I think one of the secrets is the contrast in colors… you’ve got really brilliant/vibrant colors — mixed in with bright whites and lighting — heavily contrasted with shading and near-black darkness. But the 90’s—2000’s gradient smooths it all out creating a comfortable feeling on the eyes. I can’t describe it, but every screen cap of the 99 OVA is gold. Makes you long for the nostalgic days of early Pokemon episodes and other shonen anime from the time period.

One more morsel of praise: the storytelling is quite impressive. I've never seen HxH, so I don't consider my prediction to be a spoiler, but I almost feel like Gon's intention isn't to beat Hisaka, nor is it to have fun in the ring and test his abilities -- I feel like all he wanted to do was "return the favor" and punch Hisaka in the face (hence why the flashback was so important).

After punching Hisaka in the face, I feel like Gon will have accomplished what he was training for in the past few episodes. I feel like a big plot point has ended, and a new one is about to be introduced.

But why the storytelling is so impressive is because Hisaka is supposed to be the overarching antagonist of the series as a whole, but instead of taking the traditional route--and making Gon train throughout the entire series only to defeat him at the end--the storytellers are allowing Gon to get little small victories against Hisaka. Hisaka is intrigued, occasionally surprised, and can even be impressed... moreover (with Gon at least) he's being kind of sportsmanlike? Hisaka's a very different antagonist from other shonen antagonists, so I can see why he's so popular with fans.

One last time, great storytelling, and way to utilize Hisaka's character. Even after this episode, he'll still be the antagonist and he'll stay have more roles to play in the story -- even after Gon has a personal victiory against him.

Despite I watched this battle in the 2011 anime, I was very excited, watching Gon managing trough Hisoka’s defenses was cool. Hisoka asking that woman to go on a date, also, she is very interesting. Hisoka with wet hair, so different. That hatsu thing, I don’t think they’re gonna use it now, but it’s gonna be very important in the future, especially, developing fighting styles.

Hisoka without the makeup is an interesting look.
Nice to learn even more about the aura and how people have different skills based on it.

Gon vs Hisoka at last! - He finally manages to land a punch and give him back his badge!
