THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Marie, who has adopted King as her new playmate, gets kidnapped by the Neo-Atlanteans, prompting Jean and Nadia on a rescue mission. Their search takes them into a cavernous mining quarry where an elegant, but highly advanced base-fortress is established. Unexpected dangers await the pair in this new place as they eventually are cornered by the show's real villain, Gargoyle. He only has a small part in this episode, but his role grows stronger in the later one. The episode culminates when Nadia, to save a wounded Jean from death, turns herself into the soldiers... but not before giving him her Blue Water.

This latter plot twist suggests an important turning point in Nadia and Jean's relationship. Earlier in the episode we see them having a heated discussion about their predicament. Seeing this, Marie suggests that her new adoptive guardians are going to be more than just friends. Naturally, Jean and Nadia are too young to understand love, but there are obvious hints of their growing romance, especially at the end where Nadia kisses Jean on the forehead before surrendering. The episode also has a very cute and amusing moment where Nadia unwittingly flaps her, um, bra, in front of Jean, who just can't resist the urge to stare. Later episodes explore their burgeoning sexuality, but here this is subtly hinted.

Another subject of mention is the characterization of the Neo-Atlantean soldiers. They are portrayed as murderous villains who don't hesitate to open fire on fleeing prisoners or use brutality to force their slaves into cooperation. While their hooded masks gives a strange resemblence to the Ku Klux Clan, the sequence in which a group of soldiers greet their master as he disembarks from his personal submarine strongly suggests Nazism as well. Not only does this give the episode some edge, it defines "Nadia"'s greatness as an overall series.

Seems like the anime is abandoning any sense of realism in terms of technology.

And yes, the New Atlantis' uniforms do have hoods that oddly resemble KKK outfits. Weird.

The New Atlantuans really are some pieces of work. Violent and nasty mofo's.

I should've realized this sooner, but I think this show may have been targeted to middle school kids. The suspense is never allowed to get too intense, and is often broken with comic relief. The adventure helped this from becoming an issue for me, but their travels have since stalled out on an island occupied by KKK-esque super villains for the last three episodes. Nadia at least has finally proven to be useful. She's complaining less, and isn't always following Jean's lead. Disappointingly, Maria, the young orphan introduced at the start of this arc, is very close to becoming intolerably annoying. She's taken on Nadia's worst qualities and amplified them.

I can't wait for them to get off of this damn island.

In less than no time the situation has changed radically, after only a few episodes, the story seems to have already entered the full of its events. In addition to the faces, we also come to know the name by which the villains of the situation are made known. The anime series is evolving better and better so far.

Damn, why did Marie have to go pick those flowers?
Well, let's hope our heroes can rescue her in time... if they don't get swallowed up by molten steel first! But, man, speaking of that scene... Nadia has some impressive agility, running across the top of those rails and jumping between them. If not for her, I don't think Jean would have survived.

Oh yeah, it was also fun to see the Grandis trio fight back against the guards. They may be jerkholes, but they're lovable jerkholes, and now they have a common enemy as Jean and Nadia. Do I sense a possible team-up happening in the near future?

A great episode in the second part of this arc!

Night shots and atmosphere are still great and we get some more insight to this group of cold blooded murders not only do they have the numbers and firepower they have technology as well as they seem to be members of a Neo Atlantis organization and follow their leader Lord Gargoyle. Who is not only sporting a red suit and black hood (appropriate colors for EVIL!!!) he seems to be in possession of a stone tablet that shares a connection with Nadia's Blue Water. Plus with all his followers chanting Neo Atlan I assume that is alluding to building a new Atlantis which would make sense given the underwater settings in this anime and the hint that Nadia might be a princess. Will be nice to see how this bigger conflict connects to her origins.

I liked how Jean was sneaking around gathering intel on the enemy (dangerous yes but they probably only have so many supplies in their cave so they need to formulate an escape from this island) and how the heaviness of their dire situation is highlighted here as well as Jean witnesses a prisoner being executed while trying to escape. Glad the tone is being held consistent from the last episode and the brutality wasn't just a one time plot device.

I am glad Nadia is taking care of Marie as best she can and both Jean and Nadia are trying to do their best for Marie's sake; they even argue like a couple that even Marie notices. Although I am worried Marie is making a surrogate mother and father out of them as a defensive mechanism (an understandable reaction given she just lost her parents) I hope she will be able to call them Jean and Nadia someday but for now as long as her smile can be protected in the wake of this tragic loss then I am sure things will get better for them going forward together!

Awww, Marie is still adorable and sweet whether playing with King or trying to gather flowers but that Gargoyle henchman appearing and looming over her suddenly with that music sting was a particularly effective shot capturing the shock and fear from Marie's point of view. Yeah it sucks to let her be taken away by them but if they all get captured it will all be over!

I am glad to see Grandis and her lads surviving best they can in the labor slave camp with Grandis still dishing out witty banter (while still looking fantastic by the way 🤗) while Sanson and Hanson take down a guard and steal his mask hood (although guys not a bad plan but maybe you should have tried to do it more covertly if that was your plan to escape XD) however, for their insolence they are sent to an isolated prison area! But, they strike me as types with tenacious spirits so I think they will survive and figure a way to escape; at least I hope so!

I did like Jean and Nadia's traversing of the mechanisms of the labor camp to find and save Marie from them suddenly being sped down that conveyor belt with Jeans having his head rattled and Nadia's *ahem* backside burned 😅 and then them having to run down the platforms with Nadia making great use of her acrobatic talents and reaching out to help Jean! I like how they each have strengths and weaknesses and help each other with what they can do as best as they can. But, the best part of the whole sequence was Nadia being a diversion so Jean can escape with the Blue Water; that forehead kiss of reassurance she gave him that she will be alright and her having faith in him that he will return and help both her and Marie escape were both great touches. Jean certainly seems determined to do so it will be exciting to see what is next in store for our heroes!

An episode that he has told about interesting things, the narration shows more than clearly the enormous logistical and technological power possessed by the enemy. The plot becomes interesting but also dark, I'm curious to find out what Jean will devise to turn the situation in his favor.

I do hate when shows make kids so retarded like Marie is in this one.

"Don't go outside Marie!"
"Okay!"
*immediately goes outside and gets captured because she forgot there's murderous soldiers everywhere*

Kids can be very foolish but they're not completely brainless.

so, talking about the show in terms of production quality for a second here, did anyone else notice several massive quality dips during different parts of this episode?

I swear the part where they went into the conveyor belt shaft looked pretty bad and then the last scene where nadia runs off changes quality right after she kisses jean suddenly.

maybe its just the version i'm watching but that was noticeable.
