I only have the dub, and its VHS so I can't upload it anywhere. Just one of those movies I owned when I was a baby and never knew it was anime. |

My god. Just thinking about this movie makes me cry. I think I saw this long before the Disney version, and I credit it for being the first movie to completely break my heart. I had a hell of a time getting a friend to watch this because, naturally, it is a bit dated. But when she finally gave it a chance she was pretty much sobbing by the end of it. If a DVD exists I'm going to have to hunt it down. |

Well I'm depressed now. That was so sad ;( he married the wrong person! And the more mermaid had to die because of a mistake. And I think in the end he remembers it was her. That sucks. He realized he married the wrong person and the person who actually saved him just died. I really hated in the ending when she jumped off the boat the prince just stood there and watched. What's wrong with you?! He probably thought she jumped to drown herself and just stood there like it wasn't really important. I feel bad for the dolphin. He sounded so sad. But overall I really loved it. I love to watch all the different little mermaid movies. |

On one side I like this is based on original story, but from other this is so sad... ;( This is really heartbreaking story... That poor dolphin... ;( I don't like that Prince wanted married girl which he just met, just because she saved him and when he remembers it wasn't her and he married wrong person... I was like "Too late, too late, Prince..." ;( Damn it, this story give me so many unnecessary feelings... |

It is enjoyable, however not very well-developed... the characters always seem to know things in advance; for instance when Marina starts to call the mysterious boy "Prince" for no reason. On the other hand, I had some huge issues with the voice of Marina. No offense to Fumie Kashiyama, but this is a big miscast. She sounds like a middle-aged woman and this effect is further increased by the fact everybody around her seem to have more fittingly juvenile voices. The conclusion/last ten minutes was the best part. Quite different from the Disney version, indeed. But also delivered with elegance. Overall, an interesting adaptation of the fairytale, though not that memorable. Fritz was the highlight here. |

I just had to share caps of the Discotek release of the film. http://imgur.com/a/kRRT6 It's wonderful. So crisp, so elegant, it feels like a real Disney movie level of quality. (sorry Neo1024, your release is nice for its time but we've got new stuff on the block) Discotek http://i.imgur.com/5TXxnvO.gifv Neo1024 http://i.imgur.com/V8FNsPW.gifv |

Relatively good, thanks to the global story being fairly retained and the nice undersea landscapes of the first half (and a few others 70s visuals) somewhat undermined by sloppy animation (side by side with pretty good sequences) and some bad drawings. But it lacks the spiritual aspect of the mermaid's quest (despite the sudden mention of her soul ascension in the final animated scene, wich could be a nod to the revised conclusion of Andersen's tale?) and counts some stupidities before Disney left its mark on the tale. Marina's voice sounds too old. Enjoyment: 3/5 Score: 6/10 |

Not sure how so many people can love this one, it wasn't as much of a mess as the other Toei fairy tale/legend based films but it was still rather poorly animated and had "animal friends" haphazardly thrown in. Also wasn't her dolphin friend supposed to help her when she shone the pearl's light into the sea? All he did was whine instead. Then she didn't really even do anything to win the Prince's heart, she just kinda gave up and turned to sea foam before the wedding even happened. Also, the voice acting was actually pretty bad in this, and yes I'm basing that on the japanese version. The fact that it's faithful to the original story doesn't make it instantly good. |

Oh man, I thought I was the only one who had this on tape as a child. I actually grew up loving this more than the Disney film. I remember the dub being quite decent, and the movie was probably my first tragedy set to screen. |

I think this movie is quite impressive for its time and also a little bit dark, something that western movie studios really stopped doing over time to make these kind of tales as children friendly as possible. But still I think this has more soul put in it than some of disney films that come out nowadays, the problem is film overall isn't anything too impressive or interesting for it to be considered truly great and worthy to reccomend. 6.2/10 for me |

Seems like a pretty bad deal to me, giving up your voice, your family, your home all for a guy you've met one time. And also having the requirement of this guy having to love you for all time or you'll die ... Voice acting could've been better, Marina's Japanese VA didn't really fit imo. Anyway, pretty dark story but surprisingly good for the time it was released. |

lmao she was actually considering stabbing him. Straight psycho. Never mind this whole situation is her fault to begin with. At least she came to her senses at the last minute. And why did that cat hate her so much? For that matter the humans could understand the cat speak too. Strange film. |
