And one of the simplest things that Votoms does that practically nothing in the entire genre did before or after it, is how generic even the heroes mobile suits are. There's no "Scopedog ZX MK VI" that is invincible and survives from start to to finish. The performance is nothing but a testament to the pilots pure raw skill. Give Chirico a Zaku and he'd take down the Unicorn.

One of my favorite things about Votoms was simply the action. Everything was so gritty and matter of fact. It wasn't really flashy but at the same time was really visually pleasing.

Some of the bigger scale battles are probably the coolest mecha battles from the 80s that I can think of, watching the Scopedogs zoom around in those clustered and chaotic battlefields is something else. No super units, no mega weapons, not even the super soldier main character is immune to having his unit destroyed. Just dudes in what are essentially glorified tanks punching and shooting rifles at each other.

Hmm... I think you'd go for Dougram and Layzner if you want characters, or at least more. Although I love Votoms cast all around, Vanilla is hilarious, Rochina is the man, etc, it's still pretty much the Chirico show. And I'm not complaining, only a few characters can carry an entire show like he does. All are classics though. I still liked Galient a lot even if it's probably Takahashi's weakest back then, that one not so much for the characters though, just the general tone and ultra Takakashi weirdness in the end. I swear I don't think that show had a single episode in the day time, it was bleak.

Of the 26 some eps I did watch of Dougram, yeah, I liked it even more than VOTOMs already! Didn't think that was possible and yet... but yeah, it is long, and I have a huge physical DVD backlog, the only real obstacle (if I knock out some quick 13 ep series, it makes me feel better)

Dougram has amazing characters as well,if not better than VOTOMS.

I really need to get back to Dougram. My computer died, so that was lost, but I may need to start it over again, even though I was like 26 eps in, but that was also more than like, 9 months ago. Think I'll just watch Layzner first, I tend to get off track with longer series after all.

I've seen people talk about Takahashi has a nationalist, but other than in the second half of Gasaraki, I haven't really noticed themes like that in his anime. Maybe Dougram a bit, but nothing comes to mind for Votoms, Layzer, or Galient. At least for me. I haven't seen his samurai anime, but calling samurai anime "Japanese nationalism" seems silly.

It doesn't seem like they are really driving at nationalism or propaganda in Konpeki no Kantai, just seems like off the wall war fiction that heavily shits on the US and their involvement in the war. Which tons of anime and Japanese media does. Just not in such a straight forward manner to the point where they reconstruct Pearl Harbor attacks to be more successful and have Einstein working for the glorious Nippon Teikoku.

Yeah it will be disappointing if it is just pure Japanese propaganda, (not to mention it was apparently popularized by the onset of the Persian Gulf War in 1991, which isn't really doing anything in its favour).
I was just spreading the news that's all, but considreing Ryousuke's other works before (and even after) Konpeki no Kantai don't seem to be selling nationalism. So there is a good chance that it doesn't.
