Mahoutsukai no Yakusoku

On her way home, kindhearted high school student Akira Masaki is whisked away to another world full of magic. Those who can wield it are called wizards, and some are chosen to fight against the Great Calamity annually. Although battling the catastrophe was manageable in the past, it has become so powerful that it has claimed many lives.

In the midst of all the chaos, the Great Sage has the power to guide the chosen wizards in the combat against the Great Calamity—a role that has been passed to Akira. Even though the girl desires to return home, she agrees to stay with the surviving wizards and help them find their new comrades scattered across five countries. Akira must now convince them to join the cause and lead the group against the imminent evil.

For those who might be interested in promise of wizard I say go for it! Please give it a chance. I didn't think I was going to like it, but once I saw the pv I was all in. I can't tell you anything about the game since I've never played it before but I can say it's a very magical anime. Yes it's slow in the beginning but it picks up quick! The animation is beautiful and there is humor as well and I promise you it focuses on the wizards. I do wish they could've made it 14 episodes but I think that's ... fine. It gives me hope there'll be a second season.

If you're into magic, wizard, fantasy type anime then promise of wizard is your show. Please, please give a chance!

Mixed Feelings

Sometimes, you just sit in front of an anime and watch it even if it is nothing spectacular. Promise of Wizard is that kind of anime. I sat down, relaxed, and enjoyed the ride. It didn't need to be incredible and outstanding for me to enjoy it. I think this story had a lot of potential which was unfortunately unexplored; it would have needed many more episodes, so I hope there is a second season.

This first season ended without giving any explanations about the major plot point: the Great Calamity. We have no answers to the questions we asked ourselves since it was first mentioned ... by the wizards. I'm pretty sure that if there is a second season, this would be addressed as the story keeps progressing and moving forward. Having the problem of the Great Calamity solved within 12 episodes wouldn't have made much sense anyways. Also, a new character is introduced in episode 11, but unfortunately, we don't have any explanations as to who he is either. Which makes me believe that if there is a second season, this wouldn't be the last of him we'd see. I actually thought that guy was somehow linked to the Great Calamity, which was exciting.

I really enjoyed the lore and the universe where the story takes place. I liked how it was divided into 5 regions (North, East, South, West and the Central part), and how different wizards were depending on the region they came from. As I've mentioned before, I do think the lore is interesting but it's the lack of development that doesn't do it justice.

Though the animation was ok, the character design, on the other hand, was insane! Each character was stylish and had a very distinct personality too. I found all the characters enjoyable, in their own way, and some of them were mysterious and intriguing. A lot can be made with so many characters.

All in all, I enjoyed this anime but I know it is nothing spectacular and that a lot of people wouldn't like it. Which is why I wouldn't recommend it to anyone and selected the "Mixed Feelings" option. However, if you simply want to sit in front of an anime, relax, without expecting anything, then I'd recommend it.

Promise of Wizard — You won't be making promises with wizards on this one.

It's incredibly baffling that people still think that video games, especially those made with mobile games in mind, mobages, have seen their fair share of idiosyncrasies when their content is translated to the small screen. While you have past successes of CyGames IPs like Princess Connect! Re:Dive and Uma Musume, others can only be seen as an afterthought to promote the game with its minuscule fanbase. And although we have Tasokare Hotel in this regard (which I recommend you watch over this), mobages are limited to just Japan, where Ikemens are out ... in full force (that's one reason why Disney's Twisted Wonderland works as a franchise), and you already knew the writing was on the wall for works like developer-cum-publisher Coly's Mahoutsukai no Yakusoku a.k.a Promise of Wizard, which reeks every bit of a game-to-anime adaptation that has only but limited passion going into it.

The story is as old as the day of the fight against good and evil, and in this case, it's the summoning of a modern person into the world of wizards who've been tasked to fight against evil beleaguering in the form of the Great Calamity a.k.a the moon, which descends a year that causes havoc with its obscene magic. And though the game advertises you, the main character, as the Great Sage to ally with the wizards of the world, I at least appreciate the fact that you can either play your character as a male or a female to help with the game's plot, regardless of what it is, because I've been so awestruck by mobages of similar aspects only being shadowed as a romance visual novel of some sort.

Of course, the anime, needing appeal, chooses its own protagonist in the form of female MC Akira Masaki to converse with the different country wizards that are more or less a showing of the personality and lifestyle that they originate from: 21 wizards from 5 different countries (though you'll only see half of them being the survivable lot from the last Great Calamity). I thank God that this show is not your romance harem where the remainder of the wizards need to appeal to Akira with their Ikemen styles and personality because it honestly doesn't need to be one to begin with.

However, with that said, everything about this show is just a mess. If you've been paying attention, you'll be seeing cards of monologues from the MC's POV, but they glance so fast that you are not given time to understand his/her motives. Furthermore, a big cast of characters like this only begs the tried-and-true question: do we need so many wizards to spoil the broth? None of them are particularly noteworthy (except the arrogant Northern wizards and the strongest wizard, Oz), and sure as hell I will forget them in a cinch.

If LIP×LIP's ED song is any indication that this is a harem of sorts, you'd be right, because it absolutely gives off that regard, no matter how hard you try to ignore it. But I feel sad for Mili, because her OP song here (more than just wasted talent) is just great and does give the show its allure...as an Ikemen-centered anime, for crying out loud.

I guess we already know the derivative when it comes to mobage adaptations like this: when the Ikemen get prominent, it's time to get out and never look back. It's not my bias of looking at (say) Uma Musume's horse girls and giving off the exact same vibe that Ikemens do, but it's just to the point of cringe, with minimal delivery whatsoever.

This is just emotional and psychological trash that you ought to skip, bar none.
