Stylistically similar. Both lack fine detail and forces the view to feel the scene though the movements of the central characters. Simple brush strokes and a pale colour pallet. Additionally, Tonari no Yamada-kun makes a passing reference to the tale of Kaguya-hime.

Funny family situations drawn and told in a sketch comedy style. Laugh out loud comedy, very easy to relate for those who are close to their families

Yamada-kun actually has much more of the 'nichjou' feel than Nichijou. Tonari no Yamada-kun tells the story of the very normal Yamada family and the humorous going-ons as the traditional Japanese family unit encounters various very ordinary events. Nichijou is Tonari no Yamada-kun seen through Dadaist goggles; absurd reactions and outrageous events that are definitely not every-day in the real world. Both uses a similar sense of core humour; deadpan and full of irony. There are also quite a few famous Haiku poems featured/referenced in both.

They are both entertaining and visually inventive films that look at family relations and the ways family interact.

Both animes are good if you're feeling blue. They both consist of lots of small funny srories and it would be difficult for me to say which one is more fun. These two animes are about ordinary lives of ordinary people, but "Tonari" deals more with the family life, whereas "Azumanga" describes (after)school life only. There're adorable characters in both of them. And although their animation is not that of a high quality, but... but what are you demanding from two brilliant animes that already have a soul and a full trunk of humour? To sum up, if you like comedy or slice-of-life you should  read more

Comedy featuring a traditional Japanese family unit and the fun happenings of their everyday life. Shin-chan is more risque in terms of joke presentation, and the artstyles is more variable considering it's such a long running series. Yamada-kun is a film, and has a distinctive watercolour feel.

Comedy featuring a traditional Japanese family unit and the fun happenings of their everyday life. The female children looks very similar to each other and have similar personalities.

My Neighbors the Yamadas and Daily Lives of High School Boys are comedic titles best described as a series of vignettes build around the dynamics between the main characters. My Neighbors the Yamadas is a comedic, casual slice of life anime. Its comedy is very relatable. Daily Lives of High School Boys is closer to a sketch comedy series. If you enjoy comedy then you might have found a new gem.

My Neighbors the Yamadas and Minami-ke are comedic, casual slice of life anime centered on the family dynamics. Many viewers will relate to the Yamada family with their multi-generational household. This realism is an important component of its comedy. Minami-ke is a more standard anime with popular character tropes compared to My Neighbors the Yamadas. What ultimately matters is you will laugh watching either anime.

Both are movies by Isao Takahata, about the life of a family including members of 3 generations. I personally like Jarinko Chie much more though. Especially Chie and her father have backstories, characteristics and interests, and I could relate to them well. It also has some sort of an overarching backstory that drew me into the film. I had actually a good laugh, spiced with some sadness every now and then. On the other hand, Tonari no Yamada kun was a collection of unconnected stories. The characters seemed to be equally shallow to me, with their personalities reduced to some superficial quirks. At maximum, I smiled every  read more

-both are about families where almost every member is an incompetent piece of sh-...an imperfect individual -both feature cynical humor but at the end of the day present some heartfelt moments and life lessons -both have sort of a crayon/drawing style and focus more on expressive animation than detailed art -both are very elaborate/well-produced anime based on classic, relatively simple manga

Tonari no Yamada-kun is another slice of everyday life family cartoon. The characters face everyday problems in a hilarious, yet wholesome series about family life.

One thing I like about Lucky Star is how the short comedic segments recreate something of the repetition and randomness of everyday life, but in a refreshing kind of way. Well this format was basically invented by Tonari no Yamada-kun. Tonari no Yamada-kun doesn't focus on cute girls and school life, but on the whole family and is more deep. Overall Tonari no Yamada-kun's art is simplier than LS, but it has moments of complex and realistic art/animation that can't be found in LS.

Some of the family slice-of-life drama in only yesterday reminded me a lot of yamadas. Family interactions are realistic and have been excellently handled. Some of the comedy in both is pretty good, although the style is somewhat different. They're both by Isao Takahata (grave of the fireflies), and they share some retro-sensibilities with each other. Takahata has done a wide variety of stuff, so no two works would be same. But You can feel some of the same creative energies behind these two movies. They're both slice-of-life movies about a family; while yamadas is more focused on comedy gags, only yesterday goes for more  read more

Simple minded, heart-warming story, with specific but nice animation.

Despite being a Ghibli movie, My Neighbors the Yamadas is an overlooked movie because it does not conform to the Ghibli standard. It is a comedic, casual slice of life anime shown in a series of relatable vignettes. Asobi Asobase has a different comedy style, which can be described as a sketch comedy with some pretty insane humour. Both titles can be gems for comedy lovers.

My Neighbors the Yamadas and Aggressive Retsuko are comedic, casual slice of life anime, but have very different tones and mood. My Neighbors the Yamadas shows the daily life of a multi-generational household through vignettes. Aggretsuko shows the daily life of an adult in a toxic work environment and struggles of romantic relationships. Many viewers love both anime for their relatability and humour.

Both are comedies in minimalistic style.

My Neighbors the Yamadas and The Way of the Househusband show the humour in the mundane aspects of life through vignettes. They are both casual, comedic slice of life without any real storylines. Their animation also depart from the standard anime style. My Neighbors the Yamadas resembles a newspaper comic strip. The Way of the Househusband resembles a motion comic. If you can accept their animation style then you'll find yourself laughing and enjoying yourself.
