Some of the family slice-of-life drama in only yesterday reminded me a lot of yamadas. Family interactions are realistic and have been excellently handled. Some of the comedy in both is pretty good, although the style is somewhat different.
They're both by Isao Takahata (grave of the fireflies), and they share some retro-sensibilities with each other. Takahata has done a wide variety of stuff, so no two works would be same. But You can feel some of the same creative energies behind these two movies.
