Ace wo Nerae! (Aim for the Ace!) heavily inspired the idea behind Top wo Nerae (Aim for the Top!) It's near enough the exact same thing; but Aim for the Ace is about Tennis, not giant mechs fighting aliens. Hell, just look at the names!

Many of the characters, in their personalities, designs, and interactions, are virtually identical in the two series. Their conflicts are also similar - a newcomer is unexpectedly chosen to be part of an elite group instead of another, more recognized girl, and is bullied because of it.

Both are sports anime hits made in the 1970s and also share some staff.

I often hear people compare "Ace wo Nerae!" with the similarly-titled "Top wo Nerae! Gunbuster" for their surface-level similarities and while I can see that Ace wo Nerae! did inspire some parts of Gunbuster, there's a more recent series that feels like it took a lot more from Ace wo Nerae! in some more integral ways. Yes, Ace wo Nerae! is about tennis and Hibike! Euphonium is about a concert band, but below the surface, these shows are extremely similar. In 1973 it was Oka Hiromi and Coach Munakata, in 2015 it became Oumae Kumiko and Taki-sensei. Both stories are about a character slowly finding passion  read more

Both Anime are about a female protagonist who has a lot of love and passion for her sport and is centered about the club she joins in high school in order to participate in tournaments and also to better her techniques along the way to eventually become a respected player.

It contains similar plot based on main heroine who dreams to become the best and her rival who is perfect and famous (and Ryuuzaki reminds Ayumi). There is also male character who believes in main heroine and helps her (as Masumi do). Oka Hiromi has her ups and downs, but continue her path to be the number one tennis player.

They both have the same story about tennis, a freshmen joining tennis club and reach their goal to the top.

Attacker You and Ace wo Nerae follow the life of a newbie player who at first doesn't have much talent for the sport she gets mixed into; this player is sent through grueling training. Our main characters also encounter similar dilemmas often created through their own thoughts or skills. Much like Attacker You, drama is usually not without its character development in Ace wo Nerae. If one enjoyed the friendship, love, hard work, rivalry, and teamwork in Attacker You then one might want to check out Ace wo Nerae since the show definitely doesn't skimp on these aspects either.

Both have a tennis theme. Both characters start out as the weakest link in their sport.
