Space☆Dandy

Dandy is a groovy, pompadour-wearing man who explores the stars in search of strange aliens for money, desiring to visit his favorite place: BooBies, the best diner in all the cosmos. Traversing the galaxies in his trusty ship, the Aloha Oe, Dandy is accompanied by his two equally unique friends: QT, the vacuum cleaner robot; and Meow, an alien with a cat-like appearance.

Although exciting, Dandy's job is never simple, and each new day promises a completely different, thrilling adventure. Together, Dandy and his crew get dragged into perilous journeys, misadventures in romance, and out of this world scenarios—all whilst steering clear of the evil scientist, Dr. Gel of the Gogol Empire.

Space Dandy is quirky. A silly scallywag. Swooshy flow. Big sentences makes head spin, but small ones conquer your heart! Girls love short stories. You get what I mean, baby?

Why care if not making me smarter? Because... Character movement is too adorable! Too easy game.
Believing in physics is a choice, denying it gives you unlimited swishes swashes. Don't be so stiff, man! Things melt when heated.

Story Continuity? Plot? No. I'm going to the mart, want anything? Language is means of communication, and Space Dandy is a haiku. Short, designed for flow, makes no sense half of the time, enjoyable for any day of the ... week.

Is it personalized? Hell yeah. Look at all those alien designs. They all love booba, despite anatomical differences. Ding! This sin counter belongs in the TRASH! It's ruining the sound design!! Sounds are cartoon-quirky, and I can still hear that cat going mnyenyenyenyenyneye while running. You know? You know...

Bottom line for you: Want to watch it? Check the first episode, it sells the premise masterfully. You get the design of all characters immediately: It's triple baka. The short fused delinquent, the lazy grumpy cat, the outdated robot.

Bottom line for me: Can you believe it is my jam?

It is a masterpiece under the assignment "design an adventure with no story".

Nobody is taking themselves seriously! And it's all complimentary: Smooth music with quirky sounds to get you moving; animation that can't stop yapping; characters just enjoying themselves for being there; and no restrictions to the story or plot armor.

Congratulations! You are capable of reaching the bottom of reviews, which means you can read, which means this anime might not be for you. Just kidding, hahaha... Unless?

Mixed Feelings

So much wasted potential, baby.

Space Dandy has stunning art and animation, fun and vibrant characters and an interesting world. And it chooses to do very little with all of it. Space Dandy draws parallels with Cowboy Bebop but falls short of it on every metric.

The less serious tone of the show trades character development and emotional punch for shallow jokes and simple gags. Episode 5, in which Dandy escorts a young girl, reveals the show is capable of such depth but chooses not to do so often.

A lack of overarching story leads to a very episodic show. This isn't necessarily bad, but since ... the characters of the show are almost one dimensional, there is very little feeling of development via story or character growth.

The nonsensical plot and lack of consequences to the main characters cuts almost all the tension in the episodes. Seeing them getting blown up at the end of a scene doesn't mean they die, have lasting consequences or even acknowledge the event at the start of the next scene.

What carries this show is the beautiful art and animation. The galaxy explored is full of unique shapes, colours, and and creatures all wrapped up in a cool retro futuristic style . It is a seriously groovy experience that alone makes this show worth watching.

The action can also be done quite well, showcased best in episode 7's space race. Space Dandy's own take on redline, the episode takes itself seriously. Packed full of action and style, is had me on my seat for the whole length of it. Unfortunately other action scenes in the show tend to be hampered by the bizarre comedic tone that portrays Dandy as an ineffective hero.

Despite my criticisms, Space Dandy was still a fun watch. Just go in with low expectations and enjoy the ride, baby!

Despite everything it has going for it, Space Dandy is not a good show. Given its pedigree (animated by Bones in its heyday, directed by Cowboy Bebop's director, an amazing OST) its hard to go into this show with fair expectations but even after watching a few episodes and getting used to what it really offers you just can't shake the feeling that the show is wasting your time. Space Dandy is purely episodic (although events loosely build on each other anyway) which means its needs a solid cast and interesting situations to deliver entertainment and neither of those are present.

The three main characters ... of Space Dandy are Dandy, Meow, and QT and they're all extremely idiotic losers that never get anything done. Every episode is them looking for a quick way to make money so that they can slack off without being hungry, basically, and every episode is them screwing that up. This is a funny premise but because all the characters are idiots (even QT the "straight man" character) every episode is basically just random stuff happening to three not very likeable people that have almost no agency. Dumb Guy comedy works best when normal situations are ruined by poor decision making but Space Dandy is basically too wacky and random for anything to feel consequential.

Space Dandy's saving grace is that it looks and sounds amazing. The show really lays everything out in the first episode and if you think that episode is great and want exactly 12 more things exactly like that (or 25 if you're up for season 2) then go right ahead and enjoy. However, anyone that wants character development, something like a funny version of Cowboy Bebop, or an actually funny show then don't bother. Its not the worst show ever but there's just no point to it either.
