Kanojo ga Flag wo Oraretara

In visual novels, an imaginary flag is defined as an event that serves as a turning point for the whole story. A player triggering the romance flag for a heroine will proceed to her route, or a death flag will signify that a certain character will die afterwards.

High school student Souta Hatate can see these flags above a person's head, and has the ability to bring them down to stop certain events from happening. Using this power, he has prevented other people's deaths. But, after a past accident with him as a sole survivor, he ended up believing that only misfortune will befall those who are near him, and has refrained from making friends or having relationships ever since.

However, everything starts to change after transferring to a new school. After toppling another death flag, his classmate Nanami Knight Bladefield notices his powers and tries to learn more about him, promising that she will remain at his side no matter what may happen. Thus begins Souta's journey as he meets new friends and acquaintances while uncovering the mysteries of his ability—which might run deeper than what anyone expects.

I'm still trying to process the whirlwind of emotions I experienced. This anime is a masterclass in blending genres - comedy, harem, romance, and even science fiction! I know, I know, it sounds like a weird mix, but trust me, it works.

From the start, I was hooked. Souta's ability to see "flags" on people's heads, indicating their hidden traits and desires, had me intrigued. And the girls! Oh man, the girls. Each one unique, lovable, and quirky in their own way. I found myself rooting for them, even when they were driving me crazy.

But what really sets this anime apart is its ability to balance ... humor and heart. One minute I'm laughing out loud at Souta's misadventures, the next I'm on the edge of my seat, wondering what's going to happen next. And that sci-fi twist? Mind. Blown. I did not see it coming, and it completely flipped my understanding of the series on its head.

Now, I know some people might say Souta's a bit of a wimp, but I think that's what makes him so relatable. He's not your typical harem lead; he's just a regular guy trying to navigate his feelings and relationships. And Akane... _sigh_ Akane is just perfect. I mean, who wouldn't fall for that adorable smile and sweet personality?

Overall, Kanojo ga Flag wo Oraretara is a must-watch for anyone looking for a unique blend of comedy, romance, and suspense. Just be prepared for a wild ride, full of twists and turns that'll keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

Mixed Feelings

Initial watching resulted in dropping.

Returned in July2024 and found it enteraining enough to complete, it had a consistent plot although janky & fast paced during the mid section but it reamined entertaining. Certain aspects were lacking, made it confusing & or predictable, Especially during the final 2 episodes where everything sort of just goes crazy, a lot things become convoluted and things just happen.

The biggest complaint would be the lack of use of the shows premise which is the Flag System & the MCs ability to affect them, the initial episode probably has the most use and afterwards it becomes rather irrelevant outside of harem ... building especially during the final 2 episodes where it becomes basic anime magic.

The characters were fun and of course it being a harem resulted in every girl falling for the MC with exceptions and while fun some were more fleshed out than others specifically the later introduced characters (BLUE HAIR).

The ending was brought down by the clusterfuck that was the final 2 episodes, so i'm not entirely sure what to think of the entire season but it was at least watchable.

For such an interesting premise, the show really let me down. Kanojo ga Flag is proof that a synopsis never describes a show well since the MAL synopsis is what made me watch it in the first place.

The general idea is fairly interesting; the MC has the ability to see "flags" (in his case, literal flags) on peoples' heads that let him know what may happen in their future, or what their personalities are like. Given this, you might think that it would just be a simple harem romcom with him juggling like seven relationships around, but no. Right from the start, the plot is ... so thick you can't even tell what's going on. The show doesn't explain why anything is happening until like 3/4 of the way in. And even then, it has more plot holes than a ripped-up fishing net.

The art and music are pretty decent, at least. The art style looks a bit like the older Ghibli films with more modern colorings, so characters may look younger than they really are. This isn't too much of a problem, but it did throw me off for the first three episodes.

The characters themselves are entertaining. There's not much they can do to salvage the absolutely terrible plot, but they can be just funny enough to warrant the comedy tag. I did enjoy the interactions between MC and Akane a bit, but there weren't that many of those.

Overall, not worth your time. Go watch another harem.
