Gundam Build Fighters

Kids spar in tournament battles with their custom designed toy models. The fire of competition becomes their channel to express friendship, love, and inner character. 

Angelic Layer and Gundam Build Fighters involves fighting but in a different form of what people might generally be used to. Both series involves figures/robots/dolls that are used in tournament matches. These matches tests players' skills in manipulating their gadgets against each other involving strategies. The technology of both series' gadgets are a bit different but they have science fiction themes that takes place in the near future. The main protagonist gets involved in these type of technology and competes in tournaments in hoping to become a name for themselves. Along the way, they face off against adversaries of skills in various degrees. There is lighthearted comedy, drama, and hints of romance (less so in Angelic Layer). read more 

Both are similar as the idea of popularized toys where customization is encouraged and put to battle one another in a tournament/Sport. Both main protagonists are inspired by someone/something into the sport and meet new people along the way. 

If you like YuGiOh for it's story, games, and battles - and how those are paced, then Gundam Build Fighters 2013 is where to look. To me it's the true spiritual successor to Duel Monsters's format. However, if instead you like YuGiOh for it's style and presentation, then I highly recommend checking out Tekken 1998. You'll recognise and come to understand a huge amount of director Kunihisa Sugishima's screen language. It was a delightful thing to watch, like a museum of visual ideas I've seen in YuGiOh. 

Both series are about young boys using toys that fight in virtual enviroments after an scan. While Busou Shinki uses independent girl robots, Build Fighters has remote controlled Gundam plastic models. 

Manly Hot Blooded Mecha Combat Ahoy! G Gundam and GBF contain large amounts of hot blooded hammy mecha action in the form of Gundam/Gunpla tournaments and has a large emphasis on the fighters soul being expressed during combat. Oh and in the case of G Gundam watch it dubbed for maximum effect ( Mark Gatha is much better at Domon).  

I watched Build Divers first, and I liked it. I thought it was quite good. But then I watched the original Build Fighters and I was like: "Woah, this is magnitudes better than Build Divers!" As such, watch Build Fighters. It's one of the best Gundam series out there, I'm convinced of it.  

Both series start off at a small shop that sells a popular game in which the main characters meet and form a team after realizing they share a passion for the game.
