Synopsis

Arsene Lupin III discovers that the spoils from his latest casino robbery are actually "Gothic Bills," legendary counterfeits that are nigh impossible to distinguish from genuine bills. Together with colleague Daisuke Jigen, he heads to the small nation of Cagliostro to investigate the origin of these counterfeits. Upon arrival, they save a girl from a high-speed chase who turns out to be Clarisse d' Cagliostro, the daughter of the late Duke d' Cagliostro. She is running from a sinister plot by Count Cagliostro to steal her family's treasure through a forced marriage.

Natural flirt Lupin dislikes seeing a girl in distress and seeks to remedy the situation. Goemon Ishikawa XIII, Fujiko Mine, and Kouichi Zenigata also join the fray, each with their own motivations. As everyone converges at Cagliostro Castle, Lupin reminisces about his visit there 10 years ago, and the castle's secrets emerge from the depths.

It is to this day my favorite animated movie ever. For me it has everything that an Action/Adventure movie should have and done to perfection — from its choreography, like the clock tower scene, to the introduction of characters that for me, when I first saw the movie made me fall in love with the franchise.

I first saw this when I was 14, and even 6 years later this movie gets a smile off me. It’s a good introduction to the modern Lupin series (Excluding some more adult versions like “Chikemuri no Ishikawa Goemon”) and I would recommend this one for everybody likes animation/cartoon or ...

Mixed Feelings
STORY:

It's a fairly simple story, but it's done well. The moments when this movie went full-on cartoon were the moments it definitely shined.

ART:

I like the old hand-drawn art, even thought it's pretty rudimentary. It gives it a certain charm, and sometimes makes you wonder 'It's from 1979... How did they do that?'

SOUND:

The English voice actors are alright. The only ones that really stood out were Fujiko and Lupin himself. Some of the other ones sounded kind of like they were bored. Plus, they literally translated his name to 'Wolf', which would be confusing if you didn't know what the name Lupin is ...

This was the first Lupin III thing I ever watched, like 8 years ago. I remember enjoying it a lot more then. I gave it an 8/10. Now? It put me to sleep. Yes, the animation is sporadically excellent, but I felt a lot more distance between this version of the characters and how they appear in my head. The character designs, for a start, aren't BAD, but I don't care for them. They look too cutesy and small. Goemon looks like he shrank two sizes. I also feel like Miyazaki filed off too much of Lupin's edge, which alienated him from me.

The plot of ...

18 of the Funniest Anime Faces Ever

Some characters are funny because of all the crazy antics they get up to. But others just have the right kind of physiognomy, which make them prone to pulling off some funny anime faces - intentionally or unintentionally.
