"Beautiful" is the word I'd choose to describe both stories. They both leave you with this heartwarming, happy feeling. Ojiisan no Lamp is a lot shorter than Natsume though.

Great shorts, with a historical Japanese setting, whose stories are based on certain transitions during historical periods: 

1. Ojiisan no Lamp is based on a technological transition during the late 19th century. Not going to spoil.
2. Shashinkan is a dramatic short whose setting covers part of the Interbellum, WWII up to postwar Japan.

Ojiisan no lamp is a short anime it's very similar to Byousoku 5 Centimeter as both the respected anime delivers same massage at the end , That the world will keep on changing the people surround us may not remain same but we have to except that fact and keep moving forward .

Both are somehow dealing with the traditional Japanese culture. Ojiisan no Lamp really reminded me Mr. Miyazaki's style where he focuses on the life around and the thoughts of people and their ideas and visions of the world. Both anime raise up emotions even though there is not anything heartbreaking on the first sight and both evoke this lovely feeling of peace in the viewer's heart.

Both anime focus more on the atmosphere than the story. They're the kind of anime that make you think about things. Ojii-san no Lamp is a short movie/single episode about dealing with the change that comes with time. A recurring theme in Kino no Tabi is how the world is always changing.
