The main protagonist in both series are a battle-hardened soldier trained since childhood but are suddenly thrust into a more peaceful way of life far away from the battlefield. Although the story is generally serious, comedic moments can often be found as the protagonist then spends the majority of the time learning and getting accustomed to their new settings with help from other main characters. You can also find a giant mech that acts like more of a partner & friend, having full, idealistic conversations with the main protagonist in both series and sometimes also ends up surprising the protagonist in some situations.

Both series' male protagonists are class outcasts but due to certain circumstances, they must interact with those around them, often helping characters in their time of need. They are also intelligent & methodical thinkers, are often rather cold towards others, and prefer to remain in their own worlds. As a result, they can often be subjected to being mocked by other characters. The shows are full of comedic gags and often parody the romance genre with the female protagonists behaving in ways completely different from what the male protagonists expect. Although there are romantic moments, they can often lead to comedic moments. All the male protagonist wants is to go back to leading his outcast life peacefully!
