This is my short and hopefully sweet review of Zetman, which is an action anime that revolves around human engineered monsters called players, the rebellion of these "players" and the growth of the player hunter Zet.
The show in it's self isn't a bad watch. The art work, action scenes, voice acting, and characters, are all very good in my opinion. You can also tell there is a story good here. But without ever reading the manga, you can also tell that everything is rushed plot wise because of the series only being 13 episodes long.
Everything appears to be disjointed or very hard to believe because
...
the show expects you to have knowledge of the manga as well. Also to keep up with the time constraints, key plot points in the anime differ from the manga. Which isn't bad when done right "see full metal alchemist". But often you will not understand the history, bonds and breakdowns that some of characters have built up or gone threw because there is alot that went on in the manga that the anime does not relay at all.
Overall this show is a classic example of why I believe most short anime series based on long running manga should stay true to the cannon and have "no ending", "see Shigurui". A show that lays the ground work for the series in great detail, but ends after the first arch is vastly better than a show that try's to jam 100 plus manga releases into a 300 minute anime Imo.
Also making an original story and sticking to it makes for a better short series than jumping between the cannon of a manga and what ever liberties the anime decided to come up with.
It's still a good watch for 13 eps, but don't expect to come away with anything more then alittle intro into the Zetman universe and some gory fight scenes.

Oh boy, where to start?
Characters: Boring and disappointing for the most part. Which is very sad when in the first few episodes there is much potential in Kurau, the heroine of the series. Literally the first image in the series is of Kurau standing alone on a building structure high above the busy flying cars of a future city, apathetic to what should be dangerous to any normal human. Very Ghost in the shell, Major Kusanagi visually......also there are doves flying in the backround. Which you understand later what that scene represents in the story, but this is the moments of the first episode,
...
so I was thinking more along the lines of John Woo and Kurau was about to do a slow motion dive through a skylight. Taking out a room full of bad guys with dual pistols. (End Tangent)
Later on you find out when she was 12 years old, during one of her fathers experiments with a new energy type called Rynax there is an accident, causing two particles to break free from the test area and enter Kurau's body. The "Rynax" is a sentient life form that lives it's life in pairs and when entering our "world" need symbiosis with a human to survive (perceivability). Taking over the host's personality, and gaining memories from that persons past (usually), while giving the human special powers and abilities as well. We are then treated to a "6million Dollar Man" team of scientist testing of her physical abilities, dubbing her super human.
Fast forward back to the current time and Kurau is a bad ass freelance "agent", which are basically Bounty Hunters or Mercenaries that do any job that falls beyond the scope of the GPO(Government Police). Cold, brash and the best in the business, she is even called Krazy Reckless Kurau by her co-agent while on the job. Passing threw solid matter, the ability to break her body down into light and pretty much "scan" her immediate area. She can also obliterate or bend matter and effect electrical systems. You are even treated to a battle where Kuraru takes down a Mech in a mid air battle...... with nothing but a "Riot Sword". All in the first episode!!!
What happens next is Christmas appears, who was the second of the pair of Rynax Kurau took into her body, after 10 years of resting. And in one night, Kurau turns from the number one power babe mercenary to a crying, whiny, punching bag for the rest of the series, about 20 episodes in total. Spending much of the time beaten up, bruised and crying, her spiral down to an emowreck really turned me off to this show. There are some moments where she shows true power, like the first GPO ambush were their most effective weapon against Rynax doesn't put her down. But most of the time she is face down and bleeding after the GPO begins to try and track her down for being a rynax sapien.
"Where's my Christmas!!!!!!"- Get used to hearing that over, and over, and over again.
And other than Kurau, I had zero attachment to anyone else in the series, specially since she is the only character they develop in the series. Nobody else even matters for most of the show besides Christmas, whom follow from her "birth" into the series.
Plot:Keeping it short now. The rich look for greater riches and the powerful look for greater power. And I guess in the case of the Rynax, those who can move threw dimensions, search for new worlds to experience. The ethics of the Rynax exploiting people to stay in this state of being and people exploiting the Rynax for power, is on display in the series. And that the connections that people make are special, because nobody wants to be alone, being the over riding theme. That is the gist of the story.
Also don't mind that Christmas is literally a walking plot hole against the last half of the series and nothing really is completely explained in the show. Like why the Rynax need to be in pairs, because by the end of the series Kurau and Christmas have to spent a pretty large amount of time apart from one another, but neither one is effected negatively. When in contrast, threw out the show you're made to believe that being a part from your partner physically hurts the Rynax and causes a slow and painful death.
Also what happened on the pirate ship??? No spoiler, but it makes no sense and they never talk about it afterwards. Like a married coupe who just avoid bringing up an affair in the relationship. It just goes a way.
Sound: Nothing really to speak of, the intro and closing songs were nothing special. And if I'm am not mistaken they used sound effects from the Proton packs in Ghost Busters when Kurau first comes in contact with the Rynax. So bad....... I really didn't pay too much attention afterwards because of how hackney it was to use the Ghost Busters SFX.
Art: Dull and drab, nothing stands out. The doldrums would best describe the art and personalities on display. Which would work if this was a gritty, life is hard and everybody dies type of show. Instead of being a cry fest trying to make you relate to every characters life and understand the greater value of love and friendship. Much like if Monster was about a brother and a sister beating all the odds to open a cupcake shop, instead being as real as a heart attack, dark and twisted mind f@#$. Drab works when it fits the story.
I think only two recurring characters in the whole series don't cry at some point, the evil scientist and the evil GPO director. My confusion is, is this a compelling story I want to explore or some 14 year old Gothic girls diary I should stop reading or laugh at!!!!! I enjoyed the first episode and I continued to watch this series only because of the first episode. I would not recommend this show to anyone.

As a fan of many shows that are about nothing, I have to say this is the first show I have ever watched that truly had nothing going for it.
Matantei Loki Ragnarok is an anime based around Loki, the Norse god of mischief, forced to live among humans in the body of a young boy for a sin he committed...... with the twist of he doesn't remember his sin. Also some how he is the key to ragnarok.
That is just about all I learned threw watching this dreck. 26 episodes of pure rubbish. Pretty much Oden got mad and decided to turn
...
some of his underling Gods into preteens and teens is pretty much all the back round you get from watching this show. Everything else is badly done or not worth talking about. So I apologize in advance since this will now turn from a review to a complaint list.
1) The characters in this show are probably the most under developed I have ever seen. There is not 1 single memorable person from the 700 minutes of my life I wasted watching this show. The cookie cutter archetypes of idiot(Mayura/Narugami), serious introvert (Heimdall,Urd,Verdandi) love smitten pet(Loki's crew,Reiya) got old quick.
There is also the curve balls thrown in there like Skuld, who is love smitten and a serious"Im going to kill you" character. Or Freyr, a love smitten idiot who spends the whole series either buying food for half price or chasing his lost sister Freya and his "classic Japanese beauty" Mayura.
2) I have never watched 20 plus episodes of anything and not have the story convey anything to me. I don't know if I missed the 1 clip in the whole series, but I never found out why Loki was banished. I also personally don't understand why Odin seemly pulled out the ban hammer on the other 3-5 characters in the series either. Was this a love story or a story of redemption??? A comedy or an action Anime??? I can't tell you because this show did everything terribly. The mail order everything jokes where over done. Loki's aristocracy humor is dry and the stupidity of the idiot characters isn't worth a single chuckle. "What action" is about all I need to say about the fights in this anime. Because they're basically Loki summoning that moon staff of his and saying " I have the winning move".
There is very little put into the fights in this show, and I honestly can say that Loki only has about two or three attacks. Swinging his staff is just about all he does. When you would think he would be more like a wizard type fighter, it's pretty sad that the maker of show wouldn't pick up on that or find it a problem.
3) This may be petty, by why in the name of Odin is this show called "The Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok". Mythical Detective my ass, the guy doesn't even work on any real "cases" after about the 8th episode. And what "Detective" work he does in those few episodes is definitely the most laughable thing about this show. We all know he's a god, but solving cases because " I had a feeling" doesn't cut it in a world where shows like Conan, Death Note, Un-go, ect, exist!!!!
Leg work(interviewing/ interrogating) pretty much never happens in this anime. It is replaced with everyone running around usually screaming what ever person is missing name. With the conclusion of this being Loki finding the evil object or god that he is looking for and saying " I had a feeling...". Where is the logic or Mythical diagnostic tools??? In Neuro, at least that main character will pull a slug out of his ass, then explain that it test the air or tells him the content of a substance, and gather more/other evidence before he makes his accusation....... then he eats the persons secret!!!???(Wtf Lame)
He just doesn't say I know because I had a FEELING!!!
COULD YOU IMAGINE IF LAW AND ORDER WAS BASICALLY THE COPS BREAKING IN ON A MURDER AS HE WAS CHOPPING UP A BODY AND SAYING "I HAD A FEELING"!!!!!!!!!!
What an insult to anybody who enjoys a solid detective backround in a show that this show calms to be in the DAMN TITLE.
When it comes to art and music, I can't really judge by 1-10. To me things are pretty much either bad, good/average/meh, or great. This is the only reason this show isn't a 1. The art is pretty average. Even if it isn't constance in my eyes by making many characters look pretty simple or most of the specters/monsters kind of have a filter or barrier around them......... but then drawing Ecchan the pink thing that sits on Loki's head, pretty much like jiggly-puff's stool or Fenrir like a shadow with zero definition.
SideNote- A testament of how poor this show is, Loki summons Ecchan like in the 4th or 5th episode and when I was writing this guide I wanted to know what it actually was. A ghost, familiar, demon. The official description I found on here is exactly what I wrote, THE PINK THING THAT SITS ON LOKI'S HEAD! Way to go the extra mile and add in backround about your characters!!!
The Music is also fine. It's not out of place and I really dig the opening and outro songs. They really feel Mythical and what not.
Not the worst show I watched, but pretty close. Just watch the first 4-5 episodes and the last if you have to. Pretty much everything you want to know is in that small sample. It ends exactly as it starts, you wondering WTF is going on!??!

This is my first review.
Shiki....... at first glance some people may think that this is another Vampire Anime. Another tale of forbidden love or Revenge or maybe an unlikely Vamphero. What one is left with though after watching this Anime is a wonderfully told story that when you get right down to it, has very little to do with Vampires. What it is, is a very intelligent and creative plot that by it's end crosses into it's own genre about the walking dead. Be they Corpse or Living.
Despair, forsaken, Obligation, honor, pride, sin, Dread.... These are the terms I would use to convey
...
what Shiki is about in a few words. Centered mostly around Toshio Ozaki, the head doctor at the hospital in Sotoba, and how he comforts the growing death count in the Village he believes is his duty to protect. The methodical process that takes him from believing his village is under the influence of an epidermic to understanding that it is really under attack by demons, is the man attraction of this series. And his medically grounded approach only adds to the realism of the premise. His transformation very much reminded me of Dr. Tenma of Monster, becoming the man needed to stop the crisis at any cost.
Also you follow Natsuno, a high school aged boy who parents have decided to make a change to a slower paced life and against his wishes has moved from a big city to Sotoba. Very much feeling like an outsider, he resents the expectations that the "community" weighs it's residents down with. The relationship between Sunako Kirishiki and Seishin Muroi round out the main focus of the series.
Set in a late 20th century rural Japanese Village Sotoba, in the midist of an August heat wave, you as the viewer are dropped into an idealistic small community where everybody knows your name. A Village that is surrounded by mountains and Fir trees, isolated from the world. A village that deals in death per the only export of town, caskets, and a village that has been surrounded by death ever since Kanemasa mansion, a European style Castle, was recently built.
This back drop not only sets up the right conditions for the story to unfold but it also puts you in a state of timelessness. Almost like a dream, because there are no real amenities that make you say without a doubt the year is 199X. A feeling that is enforced by the chime like melodies that are played threw out the Show. La, La, La, La, Laaa.
A true Romantic lives in the heart of Shiki. From the bright colors to the wild hair styles to the very fashionable clothes that some of the characters wear( looking at you Yasuyo and your see threw nighty=) this is with out a doubt a very "left brain" creation of this town and it's people. It might turn off some people, but it shouldn't because it adds to the Day Dream surreal atmosphere. Do the Shiki really float away when they leave or are you in a daze. Even the Villagers are in some what of a day dream when they try to recall, "hey those two young men look familiar" as you see the unknown arms of said men wrapping around the forgetful villager. And much of this interpolation is left up to the viewer, as if you are being told a bed time story. Which I thought was excellent.
I thought the series was great, because it took the norms and threw them out the window. It was serious yet very light hearted. The characters were engaging and they had depth, so much that the absent of some of the minor characters for a few episodes doesn't completely write them off in your "don't care any more" section of your brain.
Don't expect a horror show, except a real hard look at life and how unfair it is for everybody under the sun.I would say it's a must watch for most.
Update: 2/4/12
After watching this show again I just wanted to expand on two things. One being that this isn't really about Vampires. Yes that is the transition used to take the villagers from being in one group to another, but in my mind it could have been replaced with pretty much anything and held the same message. That the human condition is inescapable and not even shiki where immune. Out of many to choose from, I think the scene where the Ookawa's meet summaries this thought completely. Not give too much way, but in death the son was weighted down with every bit of burden the his father put on him in life. The vampire was not glorified, explained or even on display for most of this series. Humanity is.
Also, there isn't anything that resembles a horror show in this series. Way too light heart when people are basically wasting away or when you actually get to see an attack on a human for blood. It was pretty much conveyed as being no big deal. By shows end, the scene where you see the house wives of the village covered blood and eating there lunches, tells you alot. Everybody does what they need to do to survive, not matter how ugly or grim. The story is truly more dreadfully than anything, meaning that it plays more viewers understanding of their relationships and social background. A child watches this show, knowing nothing of loneliness or trying to live up to expectations, or find a place in life and probably get's nothing out of the shows plot.
Really a great show again. The ending is open, but if you have to leave a story with somethings left unanswered, this is the way you do it IMO. A short series, but it tells everything that needs to be told. I love this take on the undead/vampires, because it really makes look at when did this people turn into monster. And under the right circumstances would you prove to have already been dead inside from the this confine we call Modern society.
