Joou no Hana

Although Akagami no Shirayuki-hime has a very light-hearted setting and Joou no Hana becomes more serious and twisted as the plot goes on, both manga have a "royal" setting with some politics. Furtermore, both manga have an intelligent, strong and independent female lead who does her best to reach a certain goal, and a male lead who supports them from behind.

Psycho-Pass

They both deal with the government restricting society in a way. In Psycho-Pass, it happens because of the Sybil System, and in Library Wars, through excessive censorship. I can't guarantee that if you like one, you'll like the other one too, though. They're both very different in terms of execution. Library Wars is a lot more light-hearted and adds a bit of romance. Psycho Pass is a lot more heavy and serious. Freedom is also less restricted in Library Wars, where they only restrict media, whereas in Psycho Pass, the Sybil System controls everything. But if you're looking for something that deals with human rights and free will, you might as will give one of these a try.

Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii
|
While watching Soredemo Sekai, I kept thinking about how similar it was to Saiunkoku. Both anime are set in an alternative universe. The female leads are strong-willed and amazing. One of them is a fallen noble who's so poor she accepts the offer of becoming the good-for-nothing emperor's concubine in exchange for a lot of money. The other one has to become the wife of the king who's rumored to be some kind of monster who ruled the world (but he's actually a precocious brat who has lost his trust in the world). They both help the king/emperor grow as a ruler and as a person while growing themselves. And this might not be relevant, but both anime have one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard.

Both anime focus more on the atmosphere than the story. They're the kind of anime that make you think about things. Ojii-san no Lamp is a short movie/single episode about dealing with the change that comes with time. A recurring theme in Kino no Tabi is how the world is always changing.

Stand Up!
|
Okay, this might sound a bit strange: story-wise, these mangas have almost nothing in common at all (although the friendship in Stand Up seems similar to that in Natsume). Natsume is a supernatural slice of life focusing on friendship and loneliness, Stand Up is a romance slice of life that focuses on insecurity and romance. But while reading Stand Up, I couldn't help but be reminded of Natsume Yuujinchou. I don't know what it was, maybe it's that both manga are very heartwarming and down-to-earth. The atmosphere is similar and both are just incredibly good. So if you like stories like Natsume Yuujinchou but would like some romance too, give Stand Up a try.

Haruyuki Bus is a collection of one shots, but the best one I've ever read. The overall atmosphere is really similar to Stand Up. They're both not your typical shoujo (even people who usually don't like shoujo manga would love these, I think). Both manga are incredibly sweet and heartwarming, and I bet that if you like one, you'd love the other one too.

Nineteen, Twenty-One

I feel these manga are really similar, and it's not just the cats. Both manga have this melancholic air in the beginning, as they are about a girl who has lost years of her life (Keiko became a hikkikomori and hasn't left her room for 7 years, whereas Yun-lee lost 2 years due to a coma). They meet a guy who helps them pick up their lives again, and there's slow-paced romance in both manga. Cat street focuses more on acting and socializing though, whereas Nineteen, Twenty-one focuses on helping the stray cats.

Even though HnI is about boxing and Baby Steps focuses on tennis, they're quite similar: - the protagonists are nice guys, but a bit wimpy, and complete beginners; - they meet a person who introduces them to the sport and inspires them; - they join a club outside of school; - they both have a rival to whom they look up to; - they're both in love with a certain girl; - they do have talent, but get their results through hard work.

I like how both manga are really cute, refreshing and non-cliche. Also, in both manga the main character and her love interest are about the same height. Also, both manga focus more on couple growth instead of making a fuss about confessing.

Even though Toradora is more Slice of Life whereas Gosick is Mystery, the main characters are really similar: there's a main guy whom eveybody thinks is scary because of his appearance when in reality he's kind-hearted and soft, and a main girl who's tiny but rude and treats the main guy like her servant. The main girl has problems with her father in both anime (though the situations are very different).

The plot wasn't really similar (in K-On, it's about a band, and in Chihayafuru, it's about competitive karuta), but it still had the same atmosphere. Both main characters are similar in some ways. They both have a dream they want to achieve (in K-On, it's playing in a band, in Chihayafuru, it's to become the karuta Queen). They're both cheerful and air-headed. Also, in both anime, a few friends start a club and try to get more members (they're not always successful though).
