Early-2000's horror CGI anime with a dream-like and somewhat liminal aesthetic. Focus around a gloom futuristic world that feels empty, with various scenes made for you to question the reality of it. Interesting graphic horror designs and questions about identity with their respective protagonists.

As others have pointed out: Studio Gonzo (Meaning a certain early-adoption of digital animation and CGI) and character designs by Murata Range (Therefore a short-haired tomboy). Both deal with environmentalist themes, military crews, a jaded older character, stories centered around a device that will change the fate of the world as well as slightly confusing endings.

A/Z is essentially a retelling of the Gundam premise: Earth colonies in space develop their own identity, start a war with earth over independence and resources, drop a giant satellite on earth and start having the upper hand in a war due to their superior mecha, as well as the main plot being our main cast having to "deliver something" whose delivery could possibly stop the war and having a cast of youngsters being embroiled into a war setting. Of course, they also differ in many factors, such as A/Z's enemy mecha more closely resembling what one would find in super-robot (As opposed to real-robot) anime, as well as the difference on how both handle their character drama, but the similarities are so apparent that there's no way to not point them out.

Same director and same character designer, for those like me who enjoyed the art part of the anime.
