Freezing
|
Both shows attempt to establish a sci-fi perspective on what is essentially a magical girl story. Mai Otome has contracts, control gems, and nano-machines to grant girls super-human abilities and transformations. Freezing has nova, stigmata, and limiters which grant girls super-human abilities and transformations. However, where Freezing is a graphic ecchi themed series, Mai Otome is much more tame and favours comedy over blood, breasts, and panty-shots.

Ao Haru Ride

These are two stories about personal growth and change. The protagonists in both stories are social outcasts who strive to overcome their own fears and insecurities with the help of their friends. Along the way, they fall in love. The stories are quite similar, but different enough that no enjoyment is lost. Kimi ni Todoke is much more slowly paced and stretches out over two seasons where as Ao Haru Ride is only 12 episodes making it a perfect quick follow-up series if you've recently finished Kimi ni Todoke and are in the mood for another romance story.

Tasogare Otome x Amnesia
|
Both shows revolve around a romance where one character is no longer of the living. Dusk Maiden of Amnesia (Tasogare Otome x Amnesia) follows a boy who falls in love with a ghost while Sankarea is about a boy who's love interest becomes a zombie. Tasogare Otome has the darker atmosphere of the two shows, while Sankarea has a much brighter look. Tasogare Otome has more of the ghost story feel where Sankarea is more a love story.

Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom
|
Both shows focus on a duo of assassins, secret societies and organized crime syndicates. Both were produced by Bee Train and feature musical scores by Yuki Kajiura. It's almost as if Noir was the first draft for Phantom in that there are several similarities between the two (Ein and Kirika are pretty much the same character). If you enjoy conspiracies and mystery thrillers, you will likely enjoy both of these titles. Noir is the more tame title of the two. Phantom has a darker, grittier feel to it and presents itself as fare for a more mature audience.

Break Blade Movie 1: Kakusei no Toki
|
Magic and mecha are the combo that brings these two together. Escaflowne portrays magic in a more traditional way with wizards, spells, dragons, etc., and Break Blade takes a more scientific approach. Both are enjoyable shows with a decent amount of action and just enough drama to sweeten the story.

Psycho-Pass
|
AD police is a graphic police action drama set in a futuristic cyberpunk universe similar to that of Psycho-Pass. Where Psycho-Pass puts more a focus on the technology used to report and deal with violent crimes, AD Police is more of a detective drama where technology (cyborg crimes) is the subject of investigation and little attention is paid to the tech that gets the answers.

Log Horizon
|
Both of these series involve people who are locked inside of an MMO game and cannot leave. Though the situations are similar, the stories differ in that in the case of .hack//SIGN, only one player is trapped in the game and the story revolves around the people in the game who try to help and how they change as a result of their interactions with Tsukasa. SIGN is good, but it's very slow to develop. If you prefer a show with a faster pace, Log Horizon may be the better choice. Instead of only one character, everyone is trapped inside of an MMO and unlike other shows of the genre, they seem to like it there. Log Horizon follows a group of people as they strive to find their place in the new world they are a part of.

Both of these shows revolve around a group of people who are trapped inside of an online role playing game. If you're a fan of the genre or just a fan of MMO gaming, you will likely enjoy both of these series. Sword Art Online focuses more on dramatic elements as the players struggle to either accept or escape their predicament, while Log Horizon is more about people trying to learn how to live in their new reality.
